  1. Welcome to GT! I'm originally from Long Island... born and raised in Blue Point (Suffolk County).
  2. Our adoption group recommends Frontline Plus, so that is what we use. We've never had problems with ticks or fleas on any of our greys.
  3. Have you had her checked for urinary incontinence? Our grey girl Darcy was diagnosed with that when she was 7 y/o. She is extremely good at letting us know when she needs to go out to potty. Unfortunately, she can no longer control it. She will usually have potty accidents when she is sleeping. The vet put her on Proin which helped to stop it.
  4. We're only required to have rabies done every 3 years in VA - been that way since I first had pets starting in 1995.
  5. Try Cactus Juice... I love the smell and it works great.
  6. My favorite is Cactus Juice. This stuff is wonderful against mosquitoes and it's 100% natural. Plus, it smells like creamsicles.
  7. Thank you for sharing the website with me!! I can't wait to check it out! Glenda is doing really good! I'm not crating her at all and she's fine. I went home at lunch to let her out and she went right back upstairs and laid on her bed! Well, not up the stairs. She doesn't like them at all I have to wait a few weeks to make her an official member of the family but I don't foresee her going anywhere, ever !!!! I e-mailed Paula Sholtz when we first adopted Celeste. She sent me back a very nice e-mail with tons of information about Celeste's time on the farm. Glenda sounds like a wonderful girl!
  8. Adorable! Our first grey is an ICU dog (ICU Celeste) and a brindle too. The Sholtz who run the ICU kennel are really nice. http://www.sholtzgreyhounds.com/

    Rip Ears

I'm so sad to read this. RIP little Ears.
  10. DH and I are really bad about brushing our greys teeth. I honestly don't even remember the last time we did it. That being said, we do give them Greenies and Bully Stix on a regular basis. Our vet thinks they all have good teeth - haven't had to have any of them professionally cleaned since we adopted them.
  11. I'm so sorry... you certainly don't deserve this.
  12. An acquaintance introduced me to Cactus Juice about a year ago. I tend to be a mosquito magnet and hate using products like OFF. Cactus Juice is 100% non-toxic, safe for children and leaves you smelling like a cream-sickle (seriously!). I've never tried it on a dog before, but I'm guessing it's probably safe. This stuff really works!!!
  13. I'm so sorry for your loss. My BF lost her horse to colic earlier this year. He was 38 y/o and she had him for 26 years. This poem brought her a lot of comfort. I hope it does for you too. FROM YOUR PET IN HEAVEN To have loved and then said farewell is better than to have never loved at all. For all of the times that you have stopped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you...... for the care that you gave to me so unselfishly... for all of these things I am grateful and thankful. I ask that you not grieve for the loss but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each other's lives. My life was fuller because you were there -- not as a master/owner, but as my friend. Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints, no regrets and no aging. We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. Companions such as you are so rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself; give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are. Author Ken Conover Grieve not, nor think of me with tears But laugh and talk to me as if I were beside you. I loved you so . . . 'Twas Heaven here with you. -- Isla Paschal Richardson
  14. Same here... our girls are allowed on the family room couch, but not on the living room couch. Our living room is gated off (mostly to keep the cats out), but our dogs are allowed in when we have company. They seem to know the furniture in that room is off-limits. Our girls also enjoy hopping in our bed. Humans always come first. We haven't had any issues pushing them off when a human wants to sit or lay down. We didn't let our first two greys, Celeste and Darcy, on furniture at all. Then, we got our failed foster grey Bonny. Bonny was used to being on furniture in her old house. We discouraged it at first. Then, following my wisdom teeth surgery, I gave in to her. Our other two quickly followed. Bonny - first time one of our greys allowed on furniture... Our home today...
  15. I agree. Celeste was our 1st grey and VERY fussy. We tried lots of different foods. Then we got Darcy who would eat whatever we gave her. So, rather than give into Celeste's whims, we just gave her what we gave Darcy. If she didn't eat... too bad. She figured out that we weren't going to give in and started eating again. We feed our girls Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice. It's actually a very good quality food and our girls do well on it.
  16. We've had Bonny for 1.5 years. This is the first time she's had a reaction like this. The Prednisone seems to be helping. The vet called today with the blood work results... nothing out of the ordinary. She doesn't appear to have any bumps... skin is just really red and itchy. Vet seems to think it's an allergy. It would be nice to know what she is having a reaction to though...
  17. No idea, but it's quite possible. Our yard boarders 4 different neighbors. No tree spraying... at least not by us. Our other two grey girls are fine - only Bonny with the problem. DH and I have both been sick, so we've been turning all three out in the yard more than usual the past 1.5 weeks.
  18. Yes - all of our grey girls are on Frontline Plus. I last applied it about 3 weeks ago. Bonny's never had a reaction to it before. We've also never seen fleas or ticks on any of them.

  20. Our big girl Bonny developed a rash on her butt a few days ago. By last night her skin was red all over - from her butt to her ears. The poor girl barely got any sleep since she was itching and gnawing like crazy overnight. I took her to the vet this morning. The vet doesn't know what the problem is. Bonny hasn't had any changes to her diet or routine. We're wondering if she got into something in the backyard although our other two grey girls are just fine. The vet drew some blood - results back tomorrow - and sent us home with Prednisone (20 mg) and an oatmeal bath. I gave her a bath as soon as we got home. It gave her a little relief. She finally got some rest after the second pill this evening, but she is still pretty red. Any thoughts?
  21. I'd think that with all the greyhound tracks in Florida that you'd have no trouble finding a new vet. I can totally understand not wanting to leave your current vet though. I've had to move my horse several times. Thankfully, my equine vet has been willing to travel. My current (and hopefully) last barn is about 30 miles from his clinic, but he still charges me the same farm call fee.
