  1. Two of our grey girls (Darcy and Bonny) developed incontinence issues when they were around 7 y/o, so I wouldn't rule it out either. I'd still have him checked for a UTI first. For a female it wouldn't surprise me...that's usually spay-related, not really age related though. My Haley developed spay incontinence at 5. Ah... that would make sense. I've only had grey girls, so no experience with the boys. It sounded like it might be a UTI - hopefully so since they are generally easily resolved with antibiotics.

  3. DH's father and step-mother travel with their yappy Min-Pin. They stay at our house twice a year on their way to/from NY-FL. They keep their yapper leashed and in their laps whenever we're hanging out in the family room. Otherwise, the yapper is kept in his crate or behind the door of our guest room. We never turn our dogs out together - either inside or outside of the house. DH's mother and step-father travel with their two cats. They also stay at our house twice a year on their way to/from NY-FL. Their cats stay in the guest room 24/7. They keep the litter pan and cat food in there with them. I should note that we know that our greyhounds are small dog/cat safe. We have three cats of our own. Still, we take lots of precautions when dealing with DH's parents pets. Can your MIL follow similar rules?
  4. We've had her for a week now. Fay is a very sweet girl - this is her only "flaw" that we're trying to work through. We've walked her with our girls (who all have pottied in front of her on lead). We've walked her by herself. We've walked her in our backyard. Still no potty until she is off-lead in the yard. We'll try the extra long lead next and see if that helps. Keep the ideas coming!
  5. We've now had our foster Fay (Santa Fe Oops) for a week. She absolutely loves to go on walks with our other grey girls. But... she doesn't seem to understand that walks are for going potty. Thankfully, we have a fenced yard she can use. We were told that she was always turned out in the yard in her previous home. While we can require that Fay's new home have a fenced yard, but that will limit the homes she can go to since lots of folks in this area live in apartments/condos/townhouses. Any suggestions on training a grey to go potty on lead? Or, is it a hopeless cause considering that she is now 10 y/o. Thanks!
  6. I'm so glad that Beau is feeling better today. He certainly gives his mama enough to worry about!
  7. As mentioned earlier, one of our greys (Bonny) walks on the left while the other two (Celeste and Darcy) walk on the right. Now that we have foster grey Fay, I tried walking her on the left with Bonny. Nope... Fay prefers the right with Celeste and Darcy. Honestly, I don't care what side they walk on as long as they are controllable and don't cross in front of me or get tangled with each other.
  8. I'm so sorry for your loss Robin. I never met Loca, but it's obvious that she was very much loved by all that did. That is a gorgeous photo of her too.
  9. Two of our greys (Celeste and Darcy) prefer to walk on the right. Our third grey (Bonny) prefers to walk on the left. It works for us - each one has their spot, so no tangles. Left is traditional though.
  10. Agreed. Our Darcy is 9.5 y/o going on 2 y/o. She limps from time-to-time, but it's nothing more than her arthritis flaring up when she plays/runs too hard.
  11. I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. Quilty was very fortunate to have you guys.
  12. Try Google Shopping. I've found it to be a great tool for searching the web for the best prices on things. http://www.google.com/prdhp?hl=en&tab=wf
  13. If it makes you feel better... our 82 lbs. grey Bonny does the same thing. Luckily, our neighbors don't have dogs, but she will bark at their cat if he's outside. She also barks and lunges if she sees other dogs (non-greys) on walks. When walking, I jerk her towards me and scold her. Sometimes it works... sometimes not. Luckily, she's a good dog otherwise and perfectly fine (and quiet) around other greyhounds. As for your fence issue... sounds like you need a lawyer. The fact that the neighbors have a fence on your property can cause issues when its time to sell the house. My brother had to deal with this - luckily his neighbor was my grandfather who transferred the land over to my brother.
  14. I agree with this. You could restrict her to an area using a baby gate. That will allow her to see the other dog(s), but not bolt out of the dog door and over a fence. We have a thunderphobe (Bonny). She tends to hide upstairs in an enclosed bathroom (no windows) during storms.
  15. 7:10 a.m. - Morning walk approx. 1/2 mile 7:30 a.m. - I leave for work 8:00 a.m. - Dogs breakfast and DH leaves for work 6:00 p.m. - Walk or turnout in back yard 7:30 p.m. - Dogs dinner 8:00 p.m. - Dogs after dinner treat 8:15 p.m. - After treat pee in back yard Between 9:00 and 10:00 p.m. - Evening walk approx. 1/2 mile We'll usually do longer walks on the weekends, but the times stay about the same.
  16. Bonny and Darcy both sit - Celeste does not. Bonny came already trained to sit and shake. We "trained" Darcy. We make all of our greys either sit or lay for treats. Darcy is arthritic, so when she got about 1/2 way down we gave her a treat. She now sits all the time for cookies and other random times.
  17. Just ordered the cream for Celeste! She had a corn on her rear paw. We had laser surgery to remove it about 1.5 years ago, but it came back. This week, she developed another corn on her front paw. I'm really hoping the cream will work. We won't do the surgery again - very expensive and poor results.
  18. Our grey Bonny does this... always when she's in a playful/happy mood. I find it endearing.
  19. Celeste had giardia last fall. She did the round of meds the vet gave us. That did the trick - it was really quite easy to clear up. I hope you can resolve Lando's problem just as easily.
  20. Two of our three greyhounds (Bonny and Darcy) have space issues when lying down or eating. Bonny was even given up by her last owners because of snapping at kids. We've never had that problem with her, but that is because we don't invade her space when she's sleeping. We have seen her snap at our other greys though if they try to steal her bed. Our third greyhound, Celeste, is the perfect family dog - zero space issues, extremely tolerant, etc. When BIL and SIL bring our nieces over - they always direct them towards Celeste. They learned early on not to bother Bonny and Darcy unless they were awake and not on their beds or eating. To the OP - it sounds like you just need to set boundaries for how your son interacts with Boris. Greyhounds can be great family pets, but like any dog, children should never be unsupervised around them.

    Kylie

I'm so sorry for your loss Anne. I'm sure Kylie is getting ear scritches from your mom in heaven now.
  22. We use sliced lunch meat... ham or turkey.
  23. Two of our three grey girls (Bonny is too slow) are excellent hunters. Darcy once killed a robin in flight across from a school bus stop. I wasn't expecting it - especially since she was on a leash! The neighborhood kids all chanted "killer dog" which made me feel horrible. Celeste recently caught a rather large bunny in our backyard - even brought it up to the door to show me. I was shocked. Luckily, no one witnessed that one. I really wouldn't worry about small cats or animals if your grey was safe with them before the squirrel. Despite our dogs hunting, they still live peacefully with our three indoor cats and are good with small dogs.
  24. Our greyhound group (GPA-NoVA) recommends Frontline Plus. I only use it monthly during the warmer months - don't use it at all during winter. It works for us. Yes - guineas are the best for ticks. I have several horse friends that swear by them. On my horse, I use the Frontline Spray to help prevent ticks. It's marketed for dogs, but my equine vet recommends it for horses too.
