macoduck
I have a thread going here about my mutt girlie, Pudge's, ongoing anal gland problems. Do any of you give your dogs Metamusil? My vet suggested it. Do you sprinkle it on the food? Does it come in wafer form? How soon could you see results and what were you hoping to fix? Guest Energy11
Well, I am now supossed to give it to DH, as he has Divertriculitis (had colonoscopy last week). He decided he would NOT drink that crap Metamucil), so I order fiber pills from Swanson Vitamins online. You MIGHT want to ask you vet about that option? I have never had this problem, let alone having to have their anals emptied, ... :-(, but I am sure the fiber for your Pudge couldn't hurt! Good Luck! Remolacha
Don't know if this will help, but I had a rabbit I had to give Metamusil to. I used the wafers, I think there was an apple flavor (? it's been awhile) She ate it like it was a treat I think if you use the flake/powder stuff, you can get the unflavored and mix it with something like applesauce or yogurt. You should see results pretty quickly, a few days I think.
Guest bigorangedog
My heart boy Crisco ruptured his anal gland once, and after that we were to give him the Metamucil wafers (cinnamon, I believe). He happily ate them, and yes they helped!

He happily ate them, and yes they helped! That's very encouraging. Miss Pudge has a super sniffer nose. She might fall for a fiber cookie. GreyTzu
I give BeneFiber to the cats and 'Tzus. Well, to Rocky, since he's the only 'Tzu now. I mix it into his canned food. I just mix it into the canned food for the cats and sprinkle it over their dry food. Quote Wendy and The Whole Wherd. American by birth, Southern by choice. grey8greys
When my two get runny poops I break one capsule of Metamusil open and put it in their food, seems to help firm them up.
Guest LindsaySF
Teagan had an ongoing anal gland problem a while back. I tried Benefiber on the vet's suggestion but it didn't really help. I tried the powder but he wouldn't eat it, so I ended up using the Benefiber pills and rolling some canned food around it so he wouldn't know it was in there. Have you tried changing foods? Changing foods and deworming is what helped Teagan. I also increased his exercise to firm up the muscles. ETA: I have had pretty good luck with beet pulp firming up their poop. Have you tried that? FiveRoooooers
L.B., my mom's 17 y.o. cat, lives with me now. He gets (plain) Metamucil every day, twice a day, mixed into his canned food, and eats it right up. Quote Old Dogs are the Best Dogs. Thank you, campers. Current enrollees: Punkin.
