Greyhound Not Eating On Vacation

Recommended Posts

H All,

We’re on vacation for the 4th in upstate New York. Lucky hasn’t eaten since Wednesday morning. What to do? Help
Her normal meal is

1 cup jasmine rice

handful black beans

handful frozen peas and carrots

handful hamburger or turkey burger

handful Fromm kibble

small amount of water

microwave for 30 sec - 1 min so it’s warm to touch

stir

It's really common, especially if they're not entirely comfortable travelling.  The one thing I will say is that the water probably makes a difference.  Mine dogs (of every breed) usually do not like water from a new place, so I always have to bring a gallon or so for drinking and meals to begin with, and then gradually mix in the water from the vacation place.

Just keep offering her food to her and keep to her normal daily schedule, as much as possible.  She won't starve herself on purpose and will eat when she gets hungry enough.  If you're in the habit of offering her people food, see if you can tempt her a bit to get started (but not too much! ;) )

My dogs always had problems with eating while we were on vacation.  I'm pretty sure that your dog will eventually eat.  I feed by hand to get them started.  I did that today, and, we are not even on vacation!

One of our dogs does the same thing- hunger strike!    She does that on vacation and also at the dog sitter's   (where they have been many times).    I agree with the comment about the water- when we go to the Jersey shore house I always take water from home!

Ours would usually eat but would not drink when we traveled. Once we got to our destination, they would tank up on water.

Make sure your pup keeps drinking, and know the signs of dehydration including the scruff test.

A scruff test, also known as the skin turgor test or capillary refill time, is a way to check if a dog is dehydrated by gently pinching and lifting the loose skin on the back of their neck, or scruff, before releasing it:
  • Well-hydrated: The skin will spring back immediately
  • Dehydrated: The skin will take longer to retract or remain "tented"
  • Severely dehydrated: The skin will not return to normal
