Guest wannagrey Posted October 8, 2016 Share Posted October 8, 2016 This in a question about our 13 year old Boston terrier mix that is having the same symptoms one of our greyhounds had just before he passed away. Both dogs were diagnosed with Cushings Disease. Both dogs were given Rimadyl. Our terrier has not been herself for quite awhile. A couple of weeks ago she developed two growths on her chest about the size of a grape. We immediately took her to our vet, who examined the dog and said they were just cysts and not to worry about them. We also discussed how her back legs are tremoring. She hangs her head and just stares at times, she has run into things, and doesn't alert us even when we have had people walk into our house. The vet prescribed Rimadyl. This pup is half Boston and half Schnauzer and has never shed much. Since we started her on Rimadyl she has started to pant, pace, and scratch CONTINUALLY. We stopped the Rimadyl after just 6 days. Since then she has started to lose huge patches of fur and her skin is red and scabby. This is the exact same thing that happened to our greyhound before he passed away and it was horrible. Can the Rimadyl cause this? We cannot get anyone at our vet's office to look at her until Monday and I am worried sick. I do not want her in pain and suffering like I feel our greyhound was. We couldn't even get any recommendation over the phone from the vet so we have given her some Benedryl to try to give her some relief. Scoutsmom Posted October 8, 2016 Share Posted October 8, 2016 If this were my dog I would first do a web search to find out about side effects of rymadyl. Then I would seriously consider finding a new vet. A vet cannot tell just by looking at it, if a lump is just a harmless cyst or not. They can guess, but that is all. I would take my dog to a specialist of some sort (I'm not sure what specialty Cushings falls under). If she is not doing good now, I would take her to an emergency clinic, but make sure it is a good one and not one that just stitches up wounds and deals with upset stomachs. I second what Scoutsmom said above - seek out another vet who specializes in internal medicine, and in the meantime an e-vet trip might be in order. Tiredness, panting and hair loss are all symptoms with Cushings, and Rimadyl doesn't seem like an appropriate treatment to me. Guest OPointyDog Posted October 8, 2016 Share Posted October 8, 2016 Yes, you need a vet familiar with internal medicine who can help you determine if the Cushings is caused by adrenal or pituitary issues - knowing the cause will determine the best course of action for a treatment. cmc333 Posted October 14, 2016 Share Posted October 14, 2016 I had a westie on Deramax and had to take her off it because of skin problems - losing hair, red scabby patches, scratching like crazy.
