Rustyroo
We just adopted a puppy, mixed breed, from the humane society about a month ago. He has a dew claw on his rear leg. Has anyone ever seen anything like that? The vet suggests we get it removed. KF_in_Georgia
It's common on several breeds. Great Pyrenees have double-dew claws on front and back legs. There's an article here about things to consider about removing dew claws (front or rear). If you decide to leave the dew claws, make sure they get trimmed well when his nails are done. Dew claws don't get the wear regular claws get when a dog walks, and groomers often overlook the claws. I've seen the nails curled and grown back into the skin because they were neglected when the other nails were trimmed. GeorgeofNE
No reason to remove it unless it's bothering him. It's part of the breed standard for the Great P. Is it a big, hairy puppy??? Rustyroo
No reason to remove it unless it's bothering him. It's part of the breed standard for the Great P. Is it a big, hairy puppy??? He only has it on one leg. I thought that was weird. He was listed as a hound/lab mix. How general, hey. We think he is more terrier/beagle like than a lab. ZoomDoggy
I just saw a greyhound puppy two months ago who had a single back-leg dewclaw (none on the other back leg). These pics were taken at three weeks of age. This farm routinely removes dewclaws the day after the litter is whelped, but this little piggy got missed, and now it's too late to clip it without causing undue distress and suffering to the pup. So she will be pretty easy to identify even without tattoos. It's harmless to leave the dewclaw alone, unless it is causing a problem, getting repeatedly caught on things, tearing, etc. They are sometimes removed right after birth just as a preventative measure. And frankly, having had greys both with and without dewclaws, I sort of wish everyone would remove them. Torn dewclaws are a real bummer. Rustyroo
Yep, that's what his looks like. At first I thought it was a weird growth. spottydog
Hailey, our lab/pyr cross has two on one back leg and one on the other. At first I thought they were deformities until I realized they are the Sign of the Pyr!
Guest BiancasMom
Should be fine to leave it. Just watch that the toenail doesn't get too long and grow into the toe. Since it is not a weight bearing toe, they seem to grow pretty fast. ;-)
