carronstar
No worries about stepping on my toes. I only care that Scotch gets the right treatment in the right time. I have been so swamped with work this morning that I didn't get here to check this thread until now. Please keep us posted. I am holding good thoughts for Scotch. Guest kar
scotch will not eat this morning - stomach is making horrible noises - back to my vet this morning - if it were your dog what would you do he will not even eat chicken and rice looks like he might vomit
4My2Greys
In addition to getting him back to a vet that will take this seriously and treat his condition as such I would stop at a health food store and pick up some Manuka honey to give him. My boy has had problems with his digestive system for years and this has always helped to not only soothe his stomach, but also stimulate his appetite. It also stops the horrible gut rumblings. All you need to give him is a few teaspoons a few times throughout the day. Please let us know what the vet said.
Guest kar
they have given him pills for his stomach and done every test they can think of - I don not like to see him suffer - no one knows what is wrong even the gi specialist. he is so miserable - I feel horrible
4My2Greys
What kind of pills did they give him?
Guest kar
they are checking today if his blood count is down this will show if he is still bleeding internally OMEPRAZOLE, FAMOTODINE AND SULCRAFATE
Burpdog
He should have been put on IVs to flush out his system and monitor all values and kept hospitalized for several days. You must insist that this is a side effect of Rimadyl and if they don't know how to treat a drug reaction, they need to send you to someone who does. Guest kar
back from vet scotch's blood level is stable. vet gave him another med for diahhrhea. specialist said to repeat ultrasound in three days. I do not have the funds to do this so my vet said give him until Monday to see how he does. it is not that I do not want to spend the money - I do not have it. and it is not like I have not spent money in the past on my greyhounds. over the years I probably have spent close to 8,000 or more on them. I am just tapped out. and my vet said she is really unsure as to what is going on. I am so upset. to put him in the e vet for two days would cost 3,000. that is impossible for me. 4My2Greys
I'm so sorry that you find yourself in this position, but having been there I do understand. I hope that Scotch can make it through this.
Batmom
Stable is good. Is he anemic, or is he within normal range (which is higher for greyhounds) in that respect? The meds you have for him are appropriate. Important for him to stay well-hydrated. Hope he heals up quickly and with no setbacks. Burpdog
and my vet said she is really unsure as to what is going on PLEASE tell her what it is -- a side effect of Rimadyl. I could say a lot but it won't help him. Sending prayers. Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits

Batmom
Great that he is not anemic. How is he feeling apart from the diarrhea? If he has some ulceration inside, it can take a bit for that to heal. Batmom
Do you have his bloodwork numbers? He could certainly have a GI bleed without becoming anemic. They can be bad, or not so bad. carronstar
None of what you are seeing indicates he should be put down. I totally understand the fear of the expense. In the past three years I have spent close to $30,000 on Aquitaine. Thankfully insurance, credit cards and a helpful parent have allowed me to do this. It will take several more years to pay it off. Is the vet completely denying that this is a Rimadyl side effect?

Batmom
Whoa, then that vet is ... not a vet I would see again under any circumstances. Hope you can find better to help you with your pup. carronstar
I have to agree with Batmom. Is your adoption group local? Will they help? Will they take him back and cover his care? My CareCredit account is maxed or I'd offer it. My first girl was on Rimadyl for a very short while and I discontinued because I didn't feel the side effects were worth the risk. I am not saying it does not work well for many dogs. A vet who won't even consider another option would be very worrying to me.

Guest kar
went back to e vet - she said that his clotting factor is delayed - they will send out again to make sure - if this is true they would recommend blood transfusion which would not cure the condition - and he might need mmore transfusions - each transfusion would cost upward of 1,000. but he could also have other problems and they could use of my money very quickly. all in all prognosis does not seem good - one liver value is elevated. don't know if this could be liver failure - said also should do chest xray at my vet because it is cheaper and he may have a tumor in his chest. they are all over the place. they have no idea what is wrong with him. in the meantime he is not eating or drinking and I feel he does not have a good quality of life. I am heartbroken. what good is an e vet if they have to run every test know to man to know what is wrong with your dog? if he does not eat or drink by Monday - I think the decision has already been made by him. I do not know what I will do without him. the thought of it makes me sick.
