JAJ2010
Has anyone used or considered trying accupuncture for generalized anxiety in a pup? I'm starting to see signs that Sunshine's anxiety meds are not working as well as they were and we've basically cycled through every drug class... Vet wants to cycle back to prozac, but everything is a wait 4-6 weeks and see type thing. There are no TTouch people nearby us so I'm considering doing that myself and seeing if it helps her. We do have accupuncture people nearby. I wonder if that would help her? Quote ------ Jessica
Remolacha
I have never used it for that, but I would say it was worth trying. I know my vet would do a few points to relax Fletcher before she started on the rest of his acupuncture, so such a thing is possible. Whether it helps Sunshine or not, you won't know until you try. JAJ2010
Thanks! I think I'll call the vet today on my lunch break to get a price quote Quote ------ Jessica
Guest grey_dreams
We've used it for anxiety when we were in Amsterdam with a great holistic vet. It worked for us. I'd say, it's worth trying, it won't hurt and might help.
JAJ2010
Really!? :-) was it severe anxiety? Fear pooping level? How often were the treatments? How long to see results? Quote ------ Jessica
krissn333
I would try it. Can't hurt, could only help. There are calming points on the body for stress. I have taken my kids for physical ailments, but, a side effect has always been that they're very relaxed afterward. JAJ2010
Well she has an appointment Next Wed at 6:40pm. I sure wish "our" Dr did accupuncture... I'm worried this new vet will do something stupid and I will have to hate her. She can already see our record file so I'm sure knows all about the raw feeding, etc! Everyone keep your fingers crossed for a miracle. I'm going to give it a solid 4 apppointments. Then take a check point. Remolacha
Most vet's who do acupuncture are at least somewhat "alternative", so she shouldn't have a problem with the raw feeding Hope it helps!
cleptogrey
works for me! but do ask about supplimental herbs, the combo can be excellent. my acupuncturist always tells me when she gives me a new herb to take to tolerance, in other words- start of slow and increase. JAJ2010
I'm make sure to ask about herbs. We talked on the phone and she said it may help her in conjunction with the medicine she's already on. Maybe we can add herbs into that or try swapping.... Thanks everyone for all your help! Quote ------ Jessica
cleptogrey
do let us know what points they needle- or at least me....just curious. one of the release points in humans is often the top of the head, another is the sole of the foot.
JAJ2010
I promise to update! I'm just hoping I can get her to relax enough to stay still and let the Dr approach her! Last thing I need is her darting around with needles sticking it if her. LOL this is a brand new Dr. for her. I'm guessing it'll take place in the regular vet room.... I'm going to bring 3 travel beds to layer so she can be comfy if she will relax. Maybe I should bring cheese to? Quote ------ Jessica
krissn333
I always have Carrie lay down for her treatments. Much easier on her. Burpdog
You should have seen Dr. Baley chasing Magic putting needles in. Pretty funny. (for those of you who remember Magic she was the girl I adopted at 15 1/2 and she lived to 16 1/2) Some lay down, some like Batman you have to corral and have someone pet his head otherwise he would bound all over the place. Both my vets usually start with the one in the head. Talk to her about Calm Spirit. Batman is on it daily. Good chinese herb combination. krissn333
Any herbal recommendations for a dog like Carrie who sometimes has coordination issues (wonky and weak hind end) as a result of her stroke several years ago? When she starts to get a little wonker than normal, it's time to see Dr. Wall for an acupuncture treatment. So we end up going about once a month, but if there's something herbal I can give her to help, that'd be cool. Burpdog
Once a month isn't bad. There are so many different chinese herbs! Is she CHI certified? Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
krissn333
I have absolutely no idea. Dr. Wall is a he, BTW Dr. Nathan Wall. Incidentally, his wife is also a veterinarian at the same practice! But he's the one who does the acupuncture. Walliered
needles did not work for DaVid. Nothing works for him. I am trying to find a vet that will do I-therm. He is now off Doxy and Rimadyl. I will start with pred in 7 days. I wish I could find the right neuro specialist for him.
JAJ2010
I will make sure I ask about the calm spirit! Thanks. Now that I'm researching this vet I'm finding out she's only been at the practice for 3 years.... The Dr we use has over 25 years there! Knew she rocked! Filling out this accupunture intake form and this is all a little out there and crazy, even for me. Wednesday cannot come soon enough. (((HUGS))) I just don't want her cowering in a corner and the dr sticking her with needles. That's my crazy worst case senario in my head. I supose I can always sit on the floor and hold her in my lap if she gets that scared. I know I've gotten spoiled with our very good vet over the past couple years. We've been to many other people that shouldn't be able to touch even a turtle ler alone call themselves vets. Quote ------ Jessica
krissn333
Dr. Wall brings in a big blanket and puts it on the floor for Carrie, and I just pick her up and lay her down on her side and then lay on the floor and pet her and talk to her. Her first treatment she was a little bit combative because she was hurting pretty badly with a back injury, so I had to keep her laying down. Our vet gave me some Xanax to give to her to take a bit of the edge off of the nervousness. JAJ2010
Thanks! That's good to know that xanax won't mess.up the treatment. Maybe I'll dose her before we leave the house... I'll call and ask. Poor Sunshine will be going solo since we have a puppy guest this next week. Don't want to leave a strange dog alone at home so Rainy will stay with our guest. Walliered
DaVid was very scared of the needles (or maybe just the different location and vet), but he would stand, shake and pant through the entire session. Once in a while she would hit a blood vessel and he would yelp and bleed. We tried it for several weeks and finally just gave up. Dr. Jason King in Charleston said he didn't think it was doing any good anyway. Thanks and I hope we find the right treatment soon. Dr. Jennifer Au (formally with OSU) is in Charleston and I believe she is trying her best to come up with some kind of treatment for him. I do not buy the "there is nothing we can do" crap. JAJ2010
Did the person with the needles know what they were doing? I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be blood or yelping! Sounds like an acupuncture horror movie Sunshine is pretty good about blood pulls from her back leg, so I'm hoping the needle thing won't be an issue. Remolacha
My first grey would lay down for her treatments, but she was pretty weak in the back end and couldn't stand for long when we started, so that probably had something to do with it! Fletcher stood the whole time (big surprise!) Sometimes he would walk around a bit, but I kept him a still as I could. He never objected, except every now and then she would put a needle in (or try) and he would jerk away, so she would just say OK, we'll skip that one for today. It really doesn't hurt, like a blood draw needle. Hope everything goes smoothly! If your acupuncture vet does TCM, ask about "Hindquarter Weakness", it really helped Fletcher, but you have to get it from your vet.
