Guest AngelPup
UGH! Brought another fecal sample to the vet yesterday. Good news is that they didn't find any hookworm eggs (keeping fingers cross that it's not a false negative), but they did find what looks to be whipworm eggs. I say "looks to be" because the vet said that they are similar to what whipworm eggs look like, but they have never seen the worm eggs that Brady has up here in the NE. They sent the rest of his fecal sample to a lab for analysis, and I should hear back today or tomorrow morning. The vet did say that whipworms are just as hard to get rid of as hookworms (great) and take several rounds to get rid of them, but we've already done four rounds of Panacur (which the vet said is standard treatment for whipworms). Does anyone have any experience in treating whipworms? I did a search on GT, but all I could find were posts about hookworm (SEVERAL) and roundworm (one). Guest AngelPup
UGH! Well, I've been doing that with the yard (picking up immediately and spraying w/bleach & water solution), but I've only washed his bedding & toys once. Guess I'll be doing that tonight! Hopefully, he doesn't have them, since the lab couldn't find any eggs...
Guest tbrodzel
I have dealt with this same issue for almost 4 years with Brynna. She came to us with lots of parasite issues and some just wouldn't go away. But happily we just got the all clear from our vet a month ago. She did several 7 day treatments of panacur (she would have the meds for 7 days and then a few months later the vet would do another stool sample, then another 7 days, etc), we kept her potty area picked up and we started her on Sentinel (for heart worms but also works on the parasites she had, I can't remember if they were whipwork or hookworms but she has had both). I think the big turnaround was the combination of the sentinel with the panacur and my daily picking up her poo. It took a long time, lots of treatment and lots of $$ to finally rid her of the stupid worms. I hope your hound can get rid of the worms and get the happy "all clear" from the vet soon. All the best, Tori
Guest AngelPup
Thanks Tori! It's SO very frustrating. I'm so glad to have found th is site though. I think I'd REALLY be going nuts if I didn't have the benefit of other's experiences with the same thing. It's reassuring to know that I'm not alone and others have lived through this and survived!! Guest tbrodzel
Ditto, having this site has been a big help to me and my Brynna. I am glad that our nasty parasite issues can have a good outcome and hopefully help other sufferers to not give up and provide comfort. All the best to you and your hound. racindog
My mali Reba had whips when I got her but just one or 2 doses- I think it was Drontal? whatever the expensive stuff(~$40/pill) is- and she cleared them. I read that it is very difficult to detect whipworms from the fecal and many times the dog will have them and yet the fecal won't show it. You have to get the sample at just the right time to show them? Anyway just to be on the safe side I had her fecal done a couple times after the treatment and she did actually get rid of them. She was young though-17 months-don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. But maybe it won't be no big deal and Brady will clear them with 1 or 2 doses like Reba did. Yeah, I heard the same thing about whipworms--VERY hard to detect in the stool. I'm glad you were able to clear them on a dose or two! I can't get my vet to prescribe Brady Drontal Plus. But we're not even sure he has whipworms. He definitely has/had hookworms. I have a second opinion w/another vet a week from Thursday and we'll do a stool sample then. If he still has them, I'll ask her for Drontal Plus.
carronstar
I am so glad I found this topic. We found yesterday that Aquitaine has tiny white worms that my vet thinks are whipworms. Teeny tiny little white things. I actually spent last night watching a fecal sample to see if I saw them. Nope. My walker saw them yesterday afternoon and let me know. I saw them this morning. She started panacure tonight. I hope we can clear them up quickly. What I have read here has me scared. I hope these are not impossible to get rid of. Guest RICHandJUDE
My new greyt, Molly, came to us with whip-worm. She did not have any hookworm or any other kind of worm. I have 3 dogs so we medicated all three of them. I can't remember the medicine we gave them (came in a syringe) . We gave the 3 dogs medicine for 3 days straight. We then waited for 3 weeks and gave Molly (only) 3 more days of medication. We then had them all tested a few weeks later and the results came back 'clean'. I can't remember the medication but all 3 hated the taste of it.
carronstar
Thanks! She attacked her food last night so the Panacure didn't bother her. Then again, I did give her a can of Wellness Turkey, Chicken and the livers of both. Yuck! She has no symptoms (except for very few teeny squirmy white wormies) so hopefully this will be an easy fix. Hubcitypam
Dontrol Plus is the bomb. Expensive but worth it. Susie McQuade that runs GALT once said if her purse was snatched the thing she'd rue the most was the bottle of Dontrol.
greytpups
We are treating Katie for hooks and whipworms and are using Panacur. A vet parasite specialist recommended Panacur strongly over all other dewormers. We are treating all of our pups even though Ben and Brooke don't have worms (just a precaution) for 7 months with a 3 days course of Panacur each month for all of them. Ben Brooke were initially prescribed Drontal Plus but our vet switched them all to Panacur. Fecal exams will be done 3 times in one week since you can't always detect them in a single stool. We will do this midway and at the end of tx. Our vet indicated that most owners undertreat rather than overtreat and since Panacur is safe, we're treating them all until next spring. I was not told to clean up the yard due to whipworms. I know dogs can step in feces from a infected dog with hooks, whereby they will travel to the dogs mouth and be ingested that way, so we are very careful to make sure we pick up and residual poop. I'm not sure if this is the same for whipworms, but since we're dealing with both, we are very careful not to contaminate the ground. We try to put a poop bag under Katie's butt so the poop never hits the ground to prevent reinfestation and to continue to keep Ben and Brooke worm free. carronstar
As long as the meds don't interfere with her CRF/BP meds, I have no issue at all with keeping her on the Panacur for a longer time. The good thing about living in NYC is that [a] I already have to pick up the poop, and i don't have to worry about cleaning the park. Of course, she is in there every day with every other dog in the area so that is its own issue. I can wash her bedding and her covers on the couch. I can't wash the mattress or the wool rug. For those, I just have to hope for the best. I had to laugh since I left the vet 3 different samples yesterday and he only took 1. I hope my doormen didn't look inside the insulated/ice packed lunch bag I left for him.
