Iams Green Bag

Heard this works for dogs with soft stool. I personally don't prefer it and probably won't feed it but i'm curious exactly which green bag it is. I was at Walmart the other day with my gf and her dog has a lot of soft stools. We only saw the joint health and a few others. We don't know which bag is the kind that some people swear by.

The green bag that changed Rex's life is now called Proactive Health Minichunks. There is a bag of it here that Barkley is eating.

Poodle is on Natural Balance Ultra Light.

IAMS has Less than ideal ingredients for "those in the know" but the beet pulp worked wonders.

Natural Balance was also recalled a couple of years ago and Poodle is doing fine on it.

You can find bad reviews about anything -- including table salt, honey, water .... -- on the internet.

I've never had a problem with IAMS or Purina ONE. But I won't buy any Natural Balance, Nutro, Timberwolf, or Innova food again. Ever. I could add a bunch to that list but it gets boring.

I currently feed one dog the IAMS red bag (lamb & rice) rather than the green. Good stuff.

I never had troubles with feeding Iams, a bunch of my dogs ate it with gusto and had great stools. I changed from Iams to raw feeding and then canidae and now feed Pedigree without any problems what so ever. Lots of dog foods have been recalled, lots of human foods have been recalled. And I agree, you can get bad reviews on most anything you can find on the internet. If it works for you, don't worry about anyone else or their opinions. :)

I am a convert to Iams Proactive Health Minichunks in the green bag.

My Annie Bella, whom I adopted in July last year, came to me with soft stools, which got worse and worse and eventually was full-fledged diarrhea. The usual things were done (meds, deworming, chicken/rice) including putting her on a prescription food from the vet, which was what changed the course of her diarrhea.

I had read on here from many people that Iams "in the green bag" worked wonders on their dogs' poo, so after Annie's diarrhea went away and her stools were back to being "just" soft ice cream on the 'script food, I introduced Iams in the green bag into her diet.

It was astonishing the change in her output within 24 hours. It became firmer literally overnight. She's now on half 'script food and half Iams in green bag and her poo is perfect. It's also interesting that as the weeks have gone by the output has decreased, meaning her body is digesting more of the food.

My vet said that some dogs don't tolerate what is considered high-end food and the bottom line is whatever works.

Natural Balance fish and sweet potato has never been recalled. That's what my dogs are on but I was thinking of trying the Venison but a search found that it has been recalled several times. :(

I agree. If it works, it works. So my gf said she does want to try it. Is there more than one kind of green bag? Is there a type that's not mini chunks?

Yes. There is a bigger chunk green bag but all of mine have liked the small bites. There is also a Healthy Naturals version that Poodle ate for a while. Slightly better ingredients to some.

But would the Healthy Naturals still have the same effect as the green bag? I wonder what's in it that works its wonders. I hope it works for her!

Other foods: If a food makes a dog ill (I mean ill other than just liquid poop), I'm disinclined to feed it again.

I will say, Timberwolf didn't make my dog ill. It was just, in went a relatively small amount of kibble, and out came an astonishing amount of poop. Nicely formed poop, but it was truly a puzzle as to where it all came from. I've never seen anything like it. How's that for grain free? :lol And I thought I could do better than that for the $.

Not all dogs do well on IAMS but a fair number seem to. I suspect the fiber and fat types differ from the higher end foods.

I do have to say the amount of poop that comes out of Angus is kinda freaky.

It has chicken though and her silky terrier hadn't done well on that before, but that could have been due to a different ingredient. And their lamb food still has chicken. Well she's gonna try it and who knows, maybe I'll become a convert. Angus didn't do well on a chicken based food before either but again perhaps it was a different ingredient that was causing it. Thanks for everyone's opinion.

We just switched from Blue Buffalo Basics Turkey to Iams green bag (Large Breed). We both had the flu, and PetSmart seemed waaaay scary to drive to with a fever. :P Both dogs have nice "output" on the Iams, they eat it fairly happily (Joe doesn't like breakfast, and would prefer cheese on all his meals!), and it's cheap! As long as their coats stay good and they seem healthly, we'll stick with this. It's really nice not to have to make a special trip for kibble.

I've used "green bag" in a pinch and all of the rather sensitive stomachs/intestines here did well on it, we have used the "naturals" chicken and rice a lot with very good results, i only switched to another food to get higher protien for my osteo boy, otherwise they would still be on Iams.

I have one here that doesn't like Iams so I have to mix it with Purina One (which she loves exclusively) and I still get nice solid poop. Purina One does not have the fiber Iams has. And once when I felt guilty about feeding Iams years ago when everyone was pushing pricey foods and making you think you are slowly killing your dog if you didn't feed them, I mixed it with Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. We're all real happy with what we feed now.

So you didn't transition? You just started feeding it cold turkey? With her dogs terrible poops she wants to just switch over right away.

I really should have posted this thread in Off Topic because her dog is a silky not a grey. I appreciate everyone's advice. When you say it was good for your sensitive dogs do you mean ones that have overall sensitivities, even to treats? Hers gets diarrhea at the drop of a hat. For example if someone at a Petstore or bank gives him a treat or if he steals part of her dinner etc. anything odd and it's downhill.

I transitioned with Rex and by the second day his poops were so much better so I sped up the transition. It is the high level beet pulp that does it. It regulates the water in their intestines. Some GTers have just bought beet pulp in the past but you have to buy it in big bags as it is used for horses. Easier to just get Iams.

Rex had blow out bouts of colitis. In between dog doors I came home from work one memorable miserable Easter to a kitchen filled with bloody runs from an 80+ pound dog. We tested him and wormed him within an inch of his life and he had a standing script for Flagyl. His stomach would grumble at night loud enough to wake me. Then I'd spend 30 minutes trying to get him to eat something...anything...to calm it. That all quit about 3 days into the Iams and never came back.

My often repeated story is that I spent 487 hours on line and in high end pet supply stores searching for the Holy Grail of kibble. I tried novel proteins like Natural Balance Duck, Purina One Salmon, Welless and I don't remember what else. Nothing came out of Rex that I could scoop instead of hose it the yard. I finally got so pissed off one day that I (this should be my Epitath) threw a green bag of Iams in the cart and called it a day.

They are somewhat sensitive to treats, i can't give any lamb based anything without soft/liquid poops, and the soft meaty based treats (imagine beggin strip type treats) give liquid poops and awfull gas. All crunchy treats seem to sit fine.

Food wise they have to be kept on poultry based food, and nothing too high in fat. Again lamb does a number on them, fish isn't as bad but it isn't fun for me to clean up! We had nasty poops after blue buffalo and some severe GI issues after a few months of Taste of the Wild.

Sounds like your friends case is much worse, I hope she figures something out soon!

We are feeding IAMS, the green bag and overall I never had to complain about it, besides the fact they seem to poop huge amounts, 4 times a day.

And right now, I am feeding Lehto 4 cups a day and he just poops more, doesn't gain when given more.

Also Cara, I cannot give her more , which she could use, because she will start pooping more and does it in the house.

But they are always nice firm poops.

This morning we bought our first bag of Solid Gold and will see if it will work for us. Cara's allergy issues have gotten worse and we are hoping a hollistic food will help her and we hope to be able to feed less and have less poop.

I feed Iams green bag, but large breed and it does well for my girls. I do, however, add about a teaspoon of oil(soy and EVOO mix) to each meal. Brings calories up and I've not had any problems with loose stools.

I've heard good things about Solid Gold

I think it's the beet pulp that firms the stool - that's what I've been told anyway. Not sure if all the Iams varieties have the same amount of beet pulp or not.

I recently switched Ace over to the Iams Chunks Active Health in the green bag and for the first time he has solid, small poop. I started him on Nature's Domain grain free when I adopted him in August which surprisingly caused the largest, soft poo ever. 3 bags to clean it up and I just couldn't clean it all up. Then I tried the Kirkland Chicken and for a while it was better but still too soft and getting softer all the time. Now he's on the Iams and it's so much easier to clean up. No gas either. I did switch without mixing it with the old food and he instantly did well on it.

I had some Blue left, and mixed the two for Joe for a couple days. Brees got all Iams right away; she seems to be able to eat anything with no trouble. Joe's poo was noticeably easier to pick up the next day; he's often a "soft serve" kinda guy. There does seem to be more coming out of him than on the Blue, but it could just be that he's holding it so he doesn't have to go out in the cold! My boy is a princess! :blush

Ugh that doesn't sound encouraging... I thought they had LESS poop when using the green bag.

So besides more poop, did they firm up and he has nice poops more regularly now?
