Guest GreyGary91806
So in earlier posts I talked about Diago having a swollen hock and how he wil hold the leg up when he isnt running around like a mad man. I took him to the vets and he checked it out and said it seems to have been an old injury because it basically closed up, I dont know proper terms. He also suggested to start both dogs on gluco-flex, no x-rays were done just a visual and hands on exam. Diago still favors this leg as he has been for the last month, should i request Xrays you think??
riverbosun
I probably would and then you'll have a baseline xray of that leg if it's an old injury. Glucosamine is a good recommendation too. If he had an old break it may be that it will swell and cause pain intermittently. Quote Barbara Majestic and Ranger "If you want to hear the patter of little feet I'll put shoes on my dogs." zimsmom
If the swelling was not there before & it is causing pain then you need an xray? How old is the dog?
tbhounds
A second opinion with an orthopedist is always recommended. Even if you are already dealing with an old calcified fracture there are many treatment options available besides supplying joint supplements (ie- stem cell use....). Charlies_Dad
Yes. I aree with the x-ray as well as they would be a good baseline for any future issues. Guest GreyGary91806
He is only 2, I was thinking xrays would be a good idea
winnie
I agree that x-rays is the way to go. kudzu
Poor Diago. I'd ask for xrays. If that still doesn't yield acceptable answers for you then I'd asked for a referral to an orthopedic vet or at least send the xrays to OSU for review. TheFullHouse
I would absolutely have it x-rayed. It's the procedure I use whenever one of mine has a nagging limp. LuvAPuppy
Films for sure IMHO. You don't necessarily have to jump to another vet or even a specialist until the films are read. Depending on what shows up, then decide about a specialist or another vet. GeorgeofNE
A vet who is at all greyhound savvy would insist on x-rays for a limp that didn't resolve on it's own quickly. And I agree; you don't need to run off to a specialist. A simple x-ray can be read by any competent vet. All dogs have bones, after all! If your vet is UNSURE once the films are taken, it would be something to consider sending them off to a specialist, but one thing at a time.
