In Foster For 2 Years

There's a little mixed breed boy with one eye who has been in foster for 2 years. It sounds like he had his initial vet care, and hasn't been seen since except to update a vaccine. If you were adopting him, would you insist on a full check-up prior to adoption? Or is that expecting too much?

Edited to add the poor guy was 12 when he cme to them from a high kill shelter in WV; he's now 14!

If I wanted him, I'd just bite the bullet and take him to my own vet.

If the group is trying to market him, checkup with CBC or senior panel would be appropriate.

I've been following him for a year on their website and I don't think I can stand it any more. His nails are really long and I suspect he needs a dental. He had a dental when he first camne and had a bunch of teeth pulled.

Not meaning to be rude but, at that age I'm assuming it's an "as is" and asking for a vet visit really serves no purpose. He's 14, he's bound to have some issues and having the shelter spring for a vet visit and then you not take him really adds some insult to injury.

Let me add that you do have a good heart to consider taking him.

I wouldn't not take him but would rather know what I'm dealing with. I also think he needs a dental and sort of feel that's their responsibility. But regardless, if I'm approved, he's probably coming to a forever home!

I know where you are coming from on this ... I just don't know if the group would do a dental because he might need a few extractions and it could get very pricey. He'd also need to have bloodwork done before the dental and maybe a urinalysis and it all adds up. Maybe if the group is well-funded they might be able to spring for it but, the tough economy is hitting adoption groups pretty hard. :( You can always ask and see what they say - maybe they'll offer to help defray some of the costs if not the whole thing.

I would take him as is, because I have a feeling that if you were interested in adopting him, you might do it regardless of any health issues.

Maybe you could work out something with the group whereby they pay for the basic teeth cleaning and you cover any extractions needed. As for the other stuff that's not really covered anyway by groups so you would have to pay for them if you wanted further tests done.

I do hope you get him.

If it was me and I could afford it, I would just bite the bullet knowing I was doing two good things.... Rescuing a senior and helping out the shelter financially. If the potential cost meant I couldn't adopt, only then would I try to get the rescue to pay part of the costs. Good on you for giving this guy a loving home.

I do agree with you that if it is in one's means to go ahead and foot the bill and consider it as helping the group and the dog at the same time. The reason I suggested the group pay for the basic dental is because I think it is their responsibility when they take in a hound to make sure it gets the care it needs. This is not a new dog to that group, but one that as the post indicates has been with them two years. But if the group waves the adoption fee in lieu of the adopter taking care of medical and dental I think that would be an equitable arrangement, especially if we're talking a senior hound.

Like Batmom said I would also bite the bullet and deal with what is to come. Rescue groups are poor. When I think of our group (as all the rescue groups) that takes in so many broken legged greys (Fast Friends in So. California), adoption fees do not cover the vet bills. I am sorry to hear that this pup is still in foster care but the good news is he does not know it is foster care and thinks it is the forever home.
