Lena's Under Eye Is Swollen-Caused By Abcess

Wonder

Recommended Posts

Lena had her dental on Wed and had 1 tooth pulled (abcessed).

I noticed under her eye that it was a little swollen that night but it's really bad now.

It's the same side that her tooth was pulled.

I've just emailed my vet and he's pretty good about getting back to me with in a few hours.

I'm off work in 15 minutes so wondering what I can do or if there's anything I should do?

She's due for her antibiotics and pain meds when I get home.

Should I try to put heat on it?

Leave it alone?

freaking a little

thanks

If it was a major extraction, the swelling may just be due to the trauma of the procedure. I don't typically see much swelling after extractions, but it's possible. Inflammation can get worse for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure, so hopefully this is the worse of it, and should start improving now. Since it's been more than 48 hours since the dental, you can try warm compresses. Won't hurt, and might help her be more comfortable and improve circulation in the area. Typically cold compresses are recommended for the first 24-48 hrs to reduce inflammation. Hope it's nothing serious and that the swelling starts to improve quickly.

Rough night, she was in pain :( I did give her tramadol around 11:30 but it took a while to kick in.

She snuggled with me all night.

This morning the swelling is down but her eye is really tearing. It's now swollen on her jaw line.

She ate just fine. She's not as bouncy as usual but nothing else is abnormal.

Poor girly

I did hear from my vet last night and was told not to worry since she's on antibiotics.

I emailed a pic to my vet but haven't heard back yet.

That's what I'm worried about is that this ABT isn't going to work for her eye.

Her poor face looks mis-shapped.

I know when Ryder had his top two big molars taken out at the same time, his eyes looked a little swollen. About 3-5 days later, the skin around his eyes (below his eye for the most part) was actually yellow - which to me meant there was bruising, and swelling at some point, however it wasn't very visible to me at the time because he was so out of it from the meds, he slept a lot and was super mopy and doped up. I remember his face the afternoon we went to pick him up, you could tell his face just wasn't right, but it's wasn't as bad as Lena. He was more tired looking I think is the word I was looking for. It can be really traumatic going in for a dental. I really hope her swelling has subsided. It wouldn't hurt to ice it would it? Usually ice it up to 24 hours after incident and then I think it's heat to help relieve it. I'm not sure if the vet would suggest sitting there with a hot or cold pack to help or not.

I sure hope she feels better. It's not something common to happen from what I understand, but it is a risk.

I was told to use ice packs on my angel Gypsy after she had several extractions if she would tolerate them. Her swelling was really bad, she seemed to like the ice packs. Either that or the ear rubbies that went with them. Swelling was greatly reduced two days later.

This is the morning after the dental.
