I have picked up a bottle of Melatonin from Costco (5MG) and i want to start using it to help with Vegas and his storm issues but i would also like to give it to help with hair growth on both Chili and Vegas.

I'm wondering how many people have used it for hair growth and seen a difference?

I wish Melatonin worked as well on (human) female hair loss and it has on my houndie-girl. Her bald patches (neck, thighs) are completely filled in. Her tummy is almost covered and her coat is remarkably full, shiny and silky. I give her 5 mgs. every night with dinner.

I use it and the increase in Carl's fur has been dramatic, same with my friend's greyhound. Carl's neck has filled in and is very thick, both thighs now have fur (still some patchiness on the very backs of them) and his belly and penis got furry! His chest is still bare, though he has a little peach fuzz between his front legs.

ETA he only gets 3mg per day - I usually don't give it to him on my days off as I also give it to him for his SA. No need for it if I'm home.

If Vegas gets anymore fur on his man bits we are going to have start trimming things :lol he is bald on his chest and thighs and is patchy on his neck i have tried everything to get it to grow in and i cant get him an more fuzzy than this so trying melatonin wont hurt. Also it will help with his anxiety with the weather changing and since he hurt his leg last fall lure coursing we cant let him run like he used to and he is developing more daily anxiety now and is causing him to be somewhat destructive and crabby at times.

If i can get any hair to grow on chili i would be happy she LOVES the snow and is pretty naked but being a blue helps her blend better and the hair she does have is course and very short like a boxer.

Magnus was on it for over a year, and grew nice fluffy hair on his butt and chest. We decided to take a break from it to see what would happen. Within a couple months his butt is almost bald again :blush . I think we are going to put him back on it. He was on 3mg a day. We saw no change in his personality, energy levels, sleep habits, or thunder phobia, on or off it.

We have had successful hair growth with Melatonin in our house. Our dogs get 10 mg once a day. Although, there are still bald buns, but not nearly as bald as when the dogs first came home. Probably the most remarkable hair growth that I can attribute to Melatonin was Disco's baldness on the underside of his neck. It filled in and he has nice fur there now.

If I notice a storm coming up, the two freaks get another 15 mg's and wear their thunder-shirts during the storm.

I was amazed. I thought I would try it on Gilly Boy whose coat was thin, stiff, had discolored hair on shoulders, none on neck etc. I thought it might be months before I would be able to tell if it would work but apparently hair growth began immediately, was significant in 30days, and by 60 days his coat is absolutely gorgeous- lustrous, thick, no bald spots, completely grew in on his neck. The stuff is amazing. I give him 3mg day except on days when I'm there-ususally the weekend. I plan on continuing to keep him on it. No apparent side effects and it would be aweful to let his beautiful coat deteriorate and get ugly again.

Hmmm, medicating an animal for cosmetic purposes...

Every one has their own choice on what they want to do with their hound, I happen to live in Alberta Canada and it gets very nasty cold here in the winter and both of my hounds are very active and like to be outside so fur is needed. Vegas will wear a coat but Chili is not comfortable in one at all and chews them off so i need her to grow some more fur. Also the fact that it may help Vegas with his anxiety would be great.

If you don't like the idea don't give them melatonin but don't bag on people who choose to.

Indeed Alberta winters can be so very cold (I spent all my childhood/teenage years growing up in Alberta and there is no denying how brisk it can get!) and I can see why you would potentially want your hounds to have a little extra insulation if at all possible. :snow

So it's not cool that I dye the grey out of their faces and botox their wrinkley bits?

:rofl :rofl :rofl

Sweet!! :P

And we had Danger's nuts removed. :thumbs-up

So I guess surgery for cosmetics reason is a no-no judgmental thing also.

And I decided that clipping nails were a tiresome chore so I had all their nails removed too. B)

Happy tail is a pain so their tails are next. :gmark

not cosmetic; fyi coat condition is an indicator of overall health....

and melatonin is not a drug (I am a chemist and frankly I hate actual drugs-read chemicals- of any kind-they are a last resort if needed. I will not even use spot ons etc. for that same reason. IMO a body is not meant to be assaulted with foreign chemicals/ read drugs. However a natural hormone is not a chemical foreign substance-read drug- by my definition.)

Don't have to justify anything. Facts is facts. Vanity? You don't realize what a joke that is. The people who know me must be hysterical about now. Great joke!

(Its also amusing that a renowned veterinary specialist reccommended it to me and advised me to use it, but then what does he know?)

You think Melatonin would work for anxiety in the car if its good for thunder? The vet had me give my big boy 1 mg of xanax. Ive done it twice now

with NO affect. In fact I think for the ride to dewey he was actually more anxious.

Justify it any way you want so you can sleep. The main reason is vanity, plain and simple...

Oh, please. Get over yourself. If you have nothing useful to add, which obviously you don't, move on to another thread.

Melatonin is not expensive and is OTC so it's worth a try. And besides, if your dog ends up with a nice coat, you can burn in judgment hell with the rest of us. B)

LOL, its ok, I have enough to worry about than burning over this stuff ..lol

How do you know how much to give? I see there is wide variation on the coat dose as well.

I would start with 10 mg. and see how it works. :)

A while back, someone posted a link with a reference from a Vet or two stating that the starting dose is 10 mg. In a high stress situation, like for our two thunder freaks, I give 15 mg at the onset of a storm.

I have a package of pills called Melatonin Plus. They're 3mg Melatonin with 25mg L-Theanine ("a natural compound found in green tea, added for its calming and stress relief properties"). I haven't taken any of these, nor have I given them to my dogs.

Silver's coat is fine, but she's got some mild SA, and I'd love to deal with it without ramping things up to Valium and Clomicalm. I've used those with a previous dog and they worked wonders, but if we can take the edge off Silver's SA without the big guns, I'd love it.

L-Theanine (an amino-acid) appears to be the major ingredient in Anxitane--an anxiety treatment for dogs. And I've Googled for side effects (in people or dogs) and places like Web MD say there are no known side effects, even with L-Theanine in widespread use for people since the 1960s.

Silver has a vet visit scheduled for today. I'll take the Melatonin Plus along with me and see what her vet says.
