Itchy Feet

Recommended Posts

My MIL's dog has begun biting at her toes and scratching all over. I don't see any fleas or flea bites and her skin looks fine. I'm thinking allergies. She's going to the vet on Saturday. Any ideas, helpful hints, anecdotes in the meanwhile? Thanks!

If it were my dog and I could not get to the vet until Saturday I would try Benadryl in the meantime. You can call the vet and ask them for an appropriate dose for this dog. Hope they are able to get it under control quickly.

Wipe the feet off with a wet washcloth or sensitive skin baby wipes after every trip outside! Benadryl is a good idea too. Dosage is about 1mg/lb of body weight so 50# dog gets 2 tablets. Make sure it's benadryl only and not a decongestant. Don't use any topical medication or do anything extreme though- you want the vet to see what's going on.

Did she change the dogs food? Sounds like food allergy to me.

This is a new dog. She's had her about 2 weeks and she's been itchy the whole time. We're feeding her Wellness Healthy Weight because her foster Mom was very generous with the cookies so Linda (the new pup) is rather pudgy. This Wellness kibble does contain rye, but no wheat.

Food allergies or a grass allergy--I've seen both cause that.

Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). Godspeed Patrick (28 April 1999 - 5 August 2012), Murphy (23 June 2004 - 27 July 2013), Leo (1 May 2009 - 27 January 2020), and Henry (10 August 2010 - 7 August 2020), you were loved more than you can know.

I would bathe the dog to remove the topical allergens off-- remember to only use luke warm water and to only use "doggie" shampoo-- perhaps an oatmeal based shampoo. I would also start using an antihistimine-- I have had good luck with claritin and chlortrimeton-- ring your vet for his blessing and for dosages.

A food trial may be in the pups future-- sadly it may take a couple of weeks on a hypoallergenic food to see if it may help.
