Pannus (Cost Of Treatment?)

Hi everyone,

Our grey has been rubbing his right eye for about 2 weeks, yesterday I noticed this weird reflective area in his eye and called the vet who was most gracious and said they could see him immediately. She thinks he has Pannus, but wanted us to go to the Opthalmologist for a certain diagnosis. I scheduled the next available appointment (next tuesday) with the Opthalmologist. I was just wondering if it is Pannus, I understand he will need steroid eye drops- about how much would this cost a month? Regardless of cost we will treat him, but want to have a heads up so I am not shocked at the vet.

Thanks!

I have ordered from Pet Meds and it's $30.00 a bottle (15ml). I have a script to Wal-mart also, same price except the bottles are smaller. Recommend ordering from someplace like Pet Meds. I don't like the little bottles.

Sky uses two drops in each eye once a day. Bottle seems to last forever. She has been on the drops for about 4 years. She used more drops to get it under control and is now on maintenance.

My Hunter has Pannus & he uses Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension USP 1% 5 mL, one drop, once a day in each eye. A bottle lasts at least a month & according to my last receipt (from October)they were $10.54. I buy my drops from my vet but I believe you could also buy these online.....not sure of cost online.

Good luck with your baby! :)

This is one of the less expensive chronic diseases so don't worry about cost for this one! colgate.gif

Gustopher P Jones has had Pannus for years. He's on Tacrolimus gtts and I order it from Roadruner Pharmacy (they are a compounding pharmacy) in Phoenix. He started with one drop each eye twice a day and as it cleared up he's been on one drop each eye a day. My Rx is about 15ml and it lasts for months and it cost me $40.00. I also limit Gus's time out in the bright sunshine as it can exacerbate Pannus. He does most of his best hunting of bugs and terrorists in the mornings early hours and evening. Thank goodness it is the least of the worries that I've had with all my hounds over the last 15 years. Many vets use different drugs to manage this lifetime disease. See a specialist (doggie eye doctor) as many vets aren't clear or up to date on current treatment options. Pannus developes over a period of time and not so much as an acute issue.

We've had several fosters with this, and the drops are about 120 a year, we have them compounded.

My little Hollie has pannus and I pay $25.00 a bottle, which in the beginning I was putting it in her eyes twice a day, 2 drops in each eye and it lasted around a month. I have decreased the usage so she's not going thru as much. But I do plan on asking my vet for a script for Wal-mart. I know it will be cheaper. So yeah, considering what I've paid in the past for different diseases in my dogs this is nothing and thank God it can be controlled.

My Tipper had pannus, and my vet. ophthalmologist prescribed NeoPolyDex, which was an ointment eye-drop. It was maybe $10 per tube, and when Tipper was able to be weaned back to only twice-weekly eye drops, a single tube lasted quite a while, maybe two months. The ophthalmologist visit will probably be pricey (but absolutely worth it to know you're on the right track), but the ongoing treatment is dirt cheap. :)

Tiel was diagnosed with pannus a year ago. We saw a veterinary ophthalmologist who confirmed the diagnosis and told us that we could follow up with our regular vet. She uses methylprednisolone drops once a day and cyclosporin drops twice a day. Like others have said, a bottle seems to last forever and cost about $20.

As an aside, we switched from cyclosporin ointment to cyclosporin drops to make it easier for DH and our dog sitter to administer. The cyclosporin drops we were given at our vet's office were compounded in corn oil by a local compounding pharmacy. Tiel's eye got redder after switching to the drops. The vet arranged for us to get drops that were compounded in water and her eye has been fine since. The new drops cost about $40 a bottle and last about 3 months. (The pharmacy name is Wedgewood I think)

Good luck to you and your sweet boy!

Brooke was recently diagnosed with Pannus and I bought 3 bottles so i would only have 1 dispensing fee. Our vet won't give us an Rx so we have to buy it from him. It costs about $48/ 10 ml bottle. Does any one here use a pharmacy in ON?

Anyone else noticed the HUGE jump in price for these drops to treat Pannus?

prednisolone-acetate-ophthalmic 1% suspension

I bought them a few months ago from online phrmacy for $21.95 for a 15ml bottle. Now I'm seeing 10 ml bottle for $99 and higher and many sources are out of stock.

Any idea what happened or other sources?

Any ideas are appreciated.

annie also uses the neo/poly/dex, started out 4xs daily and slowly reduced it to a daily dose. the best price i found is at http://www.allivet.com

zoomdoggy- your vet sells it really CHEAP!

My Annie doesn't have Pannus but about six weeks ago she was diagnosed with its sister/first cousin, something called Nodular Granulomatous Eisclero Keratitis. As with Pannus, if untreated, she will go blind.

She has been on NeoPolyDex Optho Susp (5 ml.) for six weeks. She started out with three drops a day for two week. Dosage was then reduced slowly, every two weeks, and she's now on one drop, every other day. The cost of a bottle, which is issued by the veterinary ophthalmologist, is $22.45. Once the current, and final, two-week cycle is complete, she goes off it unless she has a flare-up.

At the same time, she was put on on Tacrolimus Aqueous (15 ml.) 0.02% susp. This is given twice a day, and she'll be on it for the rest of her life. It is a compound made by a 'script center in Fayetteville, NC, and costs $45 a bottle. I just started the second bottle last week, so it lasted me five weeks. I suspect I'll get six weeks out of the current and future bottles because I've become good at not wasting any of it.

I have no idea if $45 is an outrageous price. My immediate thought at diagnosis was, "Start the meds. Screw the cost." Now that the initial OMG feeling has passed and at her six-week checkup yesterday the condition of her eyes showed improvement, I will investigate if there is somewhere less expensive from where to purchase... or maybe not. I'm fine with $45 every five weeks or so, and if I reach the yearly health insurance deductible, they will pay for 90% of the cost.
