Guest aeroangie
I wish I could figure out exactly what is going on with Otis' front right paw. Sometimes, when he is running, he all of a sudden lifts his paw and whimpers for about a minute. My husband says he thinks he sort of sprained his "ankle" a little in a divet on the beach this past weekend. Yesterday, as we were walking down the front steps, he did this again, but when we got to the ballfield to run him, he was completely normal! Should I get it looked at? Thanks in advance! racindog
Goldie did much the same thing. He would be runnning sometimes and then stop and stick his front paw out and scream in pain. Sometimes it would pass after a little while and he would be completely normal-no lameness. It took some good x-rays but what we found was a BONE CHIP in his wrist. First vet said was nothing could be done in his case. Got a second opinion and results were the same. Said they could try but odds of success were not good and it could make it worse. He had to live with it that way. Just gave him yucca twice a day, Fresh factors, and Etogesic on occasion when it got too bad and some liniment rubs. Prognosis depends on the type of bone chip and the location. That was what was wrong with Goldie but of course you just don't know what could be Otis' problem without further diagnostic procedures. Kisses to the boy and good luck. You may need to go to orthopedic specialist as your typical vet doesn't know much about these kind of greyhound issues. Guest aeroangie
Since he never raced and is a puppy, I am wondering if it might have to do with his birth defect (born with the dislocated shoulder.) My first Greyhound died of bone cancer 9 months after I got him in 2009. He lifted his paw and screamed and it appeared to be his foot but it was actually the cancer had eaten his shoulder and his shoulder dislocated. Thanks for the replies. A bone chip.....wow! Yep, he's going to the vet!!!

Guest aeroangie
I meant to say my first Greyhound dies of cancer in 1999....not 2009....sorry! I have put into a call to my vet. Fortunately, he is our cousin so I will hear back from him quickly.

Guest aeroangie
Our vet looked at him today (no xrays yet) and found nothing! Of course, he was really rowdy b/c the vet (our cousin) came over here so it was a new person for Otis to investigate and show off in front of. Hawthorn
I had a similar issue with one of mine: crying and lifting a front leg but only after running or heavy playing and then quickly recovering and being completely normal until the next time it happened. Our "normal" vet examined Sunny several times but found nothing. Eventually I took him to a greyhound vet who found that the problem was a slightly misaligned vertebra at the base of his neck, just above where the shoulder blades meet. Apparently this was putting pressure on the ulna nerve (IIRC) and thus causing the intermittent pain and lameness. Sunny improved greatly with chiropractic sessions and a sensible exercise regime and he now has a session every 6 months just to check him over. I thought I'd mention this as a possibility as the greyhound vet we saw said this injury is quite common in greyhounds (often after a fall or collision) but is often overlooked by "normal" vets as it was by ours. Yep, he's going to the vet!!! I wouldn't consider a dislocated shoulder a "birth defect," first of all! Sounds like he just got stucking coming out, and once the shoulder was popped back into place, the "defect" was gone. I do think, however, any limping Greyhound should have an x-ray due to the high incidence of bone cancer in Greyhounds. A couple of films of the ankle won't cost a ton, and will, if nothing else, ease your mind about that. It could be anything. Have you checked his pads for corns, by any chance?? I agree, but would take an x-ray of the shoulder also. The wrist and the shoulder are the two primary locations for bone cancer in the front leg. It probably isn't cancer, but if it is, early detection is critical. Jane
