krissn333
I thought we could use some good news in here, thank you to all of you that sent prayers and good thoughts for my sweet old man. The light has come back in his eyes and he is back to his sassy old man self. He lost about 7 lbs. through this ordeal, so now we are working on getting his weight back up. He is eating well and I am feeding him often. He has been taking his antibiotics with fig newtons again, no more of me having to put his pills down his throat. I have to tell you all, if your hound quits eating or has had an ordeal like we've had, DO NOT HESITATE to syringe feed. I fully believe that trying it is what got Sutra back up and running. It's a little bit awkward at first, and at first your pup might resist, but, Sutra acclimated to it very quickly. It saved his life. We are still cautious, but very optimistic that Sutra will be back up to his old weight in no time Our prayers go out to all of those here who are dealing with scary health problems Quote Kristin in Moline, IL USA with Ozzie (MRL Crusin Clem), Clarice (Clarice McBones), Latte and Sage the IGs, and the kitties: Violet and Rose Lovingly Remembered: Sutra (Fliowa Sutra) 12/02/97-10/12/10, Pinky (Pick Me) 04/20/03-11/19/12, Fritz (Fritz Fire) 02/05/01 - 05/20/13, Ace (Fantastic Ace) 02/05/01 - 07/05/13, and Carrie (Takin the Crumbs) 05/08/99 - 09/04/13. NeylasMom
So glad to hear Sutra is feeling like himself again! Question for you - did your vet give you instructions on how to do the feeding? Also, where did you get your syringe? Zuri doesn't like the taste of his acti-flex (joint supplement) enough to eat it on his own so I have been giving it to him using a needleless syringe. He is tolerating it pretty well (I just do it right before I feed him a raw meal so he's getting a big reward for tolerating it), but I'd like to make sure I'm doing it in the way that is the most comfortable for him while still getting it down. Right now, I am sort of just shooting it toward the back of his mouth/throat. He doesn't gag or anything, just swallows and is done with it so this seems okay, but I thought I'd check. My syringe also only holds about 6 cc's and he's supposed to be getting 7.5-10 so I need to get a bigger one. krissn333
Jen, the e-vet gave us a 10cc oral syringe for administering his Sucralfate. When doing it, I would lift up his lip and slip the "nozzle" of the syringe between his teeth slightly behind the canines (think midway back on the mouth). I would squirt in a little bit and allow him to lick/swallow. Sometimes he would just kind of make a chewing motion with his mouth but would allow me to keep the syringe in there, so I'd keep dispensing it. Does the acti-flex taste bad? If it does, this method might not be very helpful for you. I don't think I'd want to squirt that much into the back of the throat though, for fear it would "go down the wrong pipe." Good luck! krissn333
Oh man this boy is HUNGRY! He eats 3 regular meals a day, plus little snacks. At 5pm he had 2 cups of kibble with some beef broth, and now he was begging pizza crust from Mark. He is still acting like he's hungry so I'll feed him again (he needs to put about 7 lbs. back on after his ordeal). He's been quite funny about it too...the begging ears and woofs are just hilarious!
