You said he came home like that...came home from where?

From rescue. he had it on both sides. They said it was flea dermatitis

ETA picture. This was taken the day he got home. It was not as bad in this pic. Today is the worst it's ever been :(

There are a whole lot more things it could be other than allergies. But it took a specialist to figure it out with ours.

so what was it?

It turns out it's a bacterial staph infection. We're fighting it right now with Cephalexin. (500 ml plus 250 ml, twice a day)

The picture in the first post looks an awful lot like what our hounds did when it was really bad. Red bumps and red skin. It didn't seem to bother him to much which also told the specialist a lot. All treatments failed in the beginning, it would start to go away, and then come right back, until we saw a vet dermatologist. Now it's almost gone.

Someone else mentioned staph infection. I washed his leg with medicated shampoo from the vet and he is back on antibiotics. I am going to look for a dermatologist. Thanks

My vet first put my hound on Clavamox, which made it disappear, but the minute I took him off the Clavamox, it would come back with a vengence. We went round and round for a year fighting this until I said enough was enough. Staph infections can be tough to get rid of, but the dermatologist said he'd make it go away. My hound has it in almost the same exact spot on his leg to. I'm not saying that's what Blu has, but I'm suspicious.

I hope you find out soon.

That looks so painful. :( There's a veterinary dermatologist in Riverdale with greyhound experience. Dr. Karen Rhodes I think I'd bring Blu there to get this resolved.

All persons and pets have naturally occurring staph on their skin. If he's uncomfortable enough to be digging tears in to his skin allowing the bacteria to enter the open wounds, he could have another staph infection. Good that he's back on antibiotics. Good luck with the dermatologist!

Poor boy. It's so difficult to see them be uncomfortable and yet not know how to help them. Everyone's far more knowledgeable than me ... I just wanted to let you know we're sending best wishes for a speedy recovery!

We just had food related allergy tests done on one of our dogs. He rubbed his eyes raw, especially after eating. The vet put him on prednisone while we waited for the results to allow him to stop rubbing and hopefully start off on the right foot after we got the results.

His tests came back and he's allergic to beef, soybeans, corn, carrots, kelp and sorghum. He's now on Natural Balance fish and sweet potato kibble mixed in with California natural wet food that's on his "allowed" list. So far so good - it's been about 3 weeks and he's not scratching much and he's looking good.

Hope it lasts.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. You are right it so hard, because I just want to make him better and nothing works. Hopefully the dermatologist can give me some answers.

Wishing Blu good luck w/dermatologist. My Max had a similar rash that started as an insect bite, he tore, licked it till it was raw and turned into an infection, cephalexin(not sure if I spelled right)is what cured it. Hope he is feeling better soon.

Dermatology problems are frustrating because the symptoms you describe could be a ton of different things. Without thorough testing there's no way you'll just guess what it is but I'm looking forward to hearing what your dermatologist says.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_Benadryl_can_you_give_a_dog just in case you do end up needing it this should help calm some of you fears about benadryl. It's a really really safe drug and I'd focus more on using a dose that works rather than the lowest one you can get away with. It's a great little drug.

http://www.professorshouse.com/pets/dogs/dog-food-allergies.aspx great website about food trials. Blood testing isn't really foolproof for food allergies and you'll have to do a feeding trial anyway to confirm the diagnosis so most vets skip the blood test. Feeding trials are tough but if they're successful it's of course very rewarding.

See if you can get some lavender essential oil and put about 20 drops in 4oz of aloe vera gel. apply this 3x/day. He should leave it alone. The lavender is an antibiotic/anti-inflammatory etc., and promotes healing, as does the aloe. I use this mix all the time, and the dogs leave it alone.

Thank you! I will try that!!

We have an appt with the dermatologist on Jan 18th. He has been leaving it alone and we have been muzzling him when we can't supervise. I laso used a medicated shampoo from the vet and it looks A LOT better!!!

One thing I wanted to mention--you might want to call the Derm Dr and ask if you should withhold treatment x amount of days before your appointment. Sometimes if you're treating the skin with orals or topicals they won't be able to run the diag. tests. Medications will alter the results-just FYI (might save you an extra trip)and by the way--Doc R. is wonderful--you'll love her :)
