Ace Is Having A Weird Eye Issue

Recommended Posts

Ace has seemingly been having an eye problem...during the day she seems totally fine, but in the evenings (like right now), it's like she can't even open her eyes very wide and when she DOES open her eyes, her third eyelid is covering her eyeball. Very odd. It really makes her look kind of creepy and possessed. It's like she isn't sleeping during the day and is so exhausted by the time I get home that she's just a zombie. She acts pretty normal - eating and drinking just fine, plays in the yard during the day. It's just at night, she crashes SO hard. As soon as she's tucked in she's OUT, which isn't like her. Usually she's a little grumpy about her space but lately she's so tired she doesn't care.

Here's what she looks like, and has looked like for the last couple of nights. I'm calling our vet in the morning...but, if I take her in she probably won't look like this because she only looks like this at night. It's so weird - has anyone had this happen before?

They eat twice a day...dinner is around 5pm right before Mark leaves for work, so I can't attest to what time it is when her eyes start acting up like this (I get home between 9 and 11pm and her eyes are normal while she's all bonkers to go outside and play, it's when she comes in and settles down for the evening that it starts), but, she's just fine after breakfast (between 9 and 10) and I'm usually here until about 12:45 or so. dunno.gif It's most puzzling! My first thought was allergies, but why would she all of a sudden start having a problem? Nothing has changed, I haven't changed household cleaners or detergents or anything like that.

She's been eating the same food for over a year now too dunno.gif I just wonder if she's super tired...but I have no idea why she'd be so tired all of a sudden.

Clancy does this at night. He's a very deep sleeper when he finally crashes and he literally can't keep his eyes open when he's tired.

Is she playing more during the day than usual, so is more tired at night? Any changes in the schedule/routine?

I don't really know, but you can always take this picture in to the vet so he/she can see what she looks like.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone...nothing about her daily life has changed at all. No new detergents, clothing, change in weather, change in schedule...nothing dunno.gif

I leave for work around 12:45pm and by that time my boyfriend who works third shift is asleep, so the dogs just sleep too until he gets up to get ready for work.

For about a month now she will skip a meal or two here and there...occasionally she will not want her breakfast or dinner and I'll notice her tummy is making gurgly noises, so I give her a pepcid and wait about half an hour and then she's happy to eat.

I'm at work now but DBF called and said she didn't want her dinner and seemed a little bit mopey. Still carrying on with the weird eyelid thing. Her tummy isn't gurgly though.

I am now wondering if she's back to having her little tiny seizures that she had several years ago when her thyroid was low. We haven't switched her to Soloxine yet (it's on order) so she's been taking the same meds she's been taking all along. I do know that they get tired from seizing, but, she's never had any tonic clonic seizures (learned that terminology from SparklyMegz wink.gif), and I've never witnessed any kind of seizure activity or post-ictal state type stuff (which is all we saw before...never saw the seizures themselves...don't really even know FOR SURE if she'd had seizures or she just had some weird episodes dunno.gif).

We have an appointment tomorrow morning at our vet's office. We will not be seeing our usual vet, Dr. Mulch, but we'll see the other doc in the practice, Dr. Drey (doesn't that make you laugh? lol.gif). He's a newer vet and I actually wanted to see him because I've heard good things...he tends to be very thorough which I feel is needed in this case...

Keep those ideas coming if you have any thoughts...and I'll be sure to let you know what we find out tomorrow. smile.gif

ETA: Kikigirl...I have not taken her temp but I will do that tonight when I get home.

Sorry guys, I've been without internet access for a day or so...

Yesterday morning she actually had some yellowy mucus-y stuff in the corner of one of her eyes...got to the vet, she definitely has an eye infection and we have eye drops for that. She was running a temperature - 103.5. Dr. Drey (still makes me giggle) felt it would be good to do a good full blood workup to make sure there's not anything else lingering/off, since she's been weird with her meals for about a month now, on and off.

Started the drops yesterday as soon as we got home...one of her eyes was closed up with goop in the early evening yesterday, but today her eyes seem much better and she ate her breakfast AND her dinner.

We should have bloodwork results on Tuesday at the latest, so we'll know if there's anything else we need to deal with at that point.

Thanks for all of your ideas and good thoughts for my peanut!

I'm convinced there's something else going on. She's been on the drops since Saturday (I know that's not a long time, but...). On occasion her eyes are still doing the weird thing (and they're RED). She did not want her dinner this evening. I'll take her temp when I get home.

Re: refusing dinner. The past few times she hasn't wanted to eat, I've taken her bowl over to her on the couch and she will eat within a few minutes. Perhaps I have been spoiling her and when she doesn't eat for DBF, she's wanting him to bring her bowl to the couch? :lol I probably need to break that habit...

She's just so up and down that I can't decide if she's really not feeling well or just being a picky little monkey. When I get home in the evenings she's bonkers and wants to play and is the first one out the door :dunno

No, he is just one of the two vets at our vet's office.

He did have a really swanky looking eye-looker-scopey-thingy though :P

I don't think we have any eye specialists around here.

The closest vet school is 3 hours away. I should hear about her bloodwork sometime this afternoon. She didn't want her breakfast this morning and just wanted to go back to bed. Her tummy was making noise earlier too. Guess we'll see what the bloodwork says.
