I Am Really Getting Worried About Star...

I have never known Star to not eat. She has been here 6 1/2 years and never in all that time have I known her to be sick or refuse food. Most of the time she is stealing food to eat and will even eat poo, if allowed to find it. Last night she would not eat her dinner. Then she threw up several times. the first time it was food in with a slimy mucus. Then it was foam and slime and mucus. I guess coming from drainage from her head. I am really beginning to worry about her head being so full of snot. It is only on the left side. She is on 3 weeks of Clavamox. If that doesn't work she will have to go to a specialty clinic for a rhinoscopy. The mucus is white, no blood in the mucus. You can see the left side of her nose is full of this mucus but the right is clear. She will sneeze and a long ribbon of snot will hang from her nose. It is not a pretty sight. She is feeling fine this morning and ate like she hadn't been fed in a month. I guess she just got an overload of this stuff in her tummy and it made her sick. I might also add, this all started right after she stole and ate a very large bag of dry rice. The vet washed out her nose (thinking she might have gotten rice up in there), cultured the snot and gave me a long name of something they found. That is why she is on AB. I will be calling the vet tomorrow so I can write down the name of the thing they got in the culture. Has anyone experienced this with their grey? Thanks.

No experience with greys, but people. Sounds like a pretty bad sinus infection, and of course some of that mucusy snot certainly IS draining into her throat, and into the stomach. I know when I just have post-nasal drip from allergies, it irritates my stomach.

Most likely, it is a combination of the drip from her infected sinus and the Clavamox, irritating her stomach, causing her not to want to eat. You could try a Pepcid AC (or the generic) about 30-45 minutes before feeding her, in case her tummy is upset.

Good idea to check back with the vet, to tell him/her, how things are going and to get the name of whatever they found in that culture.

Good Luck! Hope it all turns out well.

One mentions that loss of appetite can happen when they lose their sense of smell.

I know you said your vet looked up in there but you can hold a mirror under the nostrils. Look for it to be steamed up from both nostrils. If there's only one steamy spot then there's blockage.

I know from personal experience, drainage from a sinus infection will dampen your appetite! Clavamox has never bothered my cats, but Sugar (my first grey) couldn't take it at all. Definitely check with your vet, but if she's eating again, that's probably all it was.

Older pets with sneezing/nasal discharge are more likely to have chronic dental disease or tumors.

Thanks Duckey. Tumor is the one I am most worried about. Star will be 10 Feb. 2.

Did he scope her the entire nasal cavity? (I don't know what kind of instruments they use but I know it's usually a specialist)

Since this happened directly after the rice incident, I wonder if there is rice somewhere that is causing the whole thing.

Try stinky food. Most of the dogs I've had tolerated clavamox with no problems. You might try pepcid for her stomach.

OK looked at your first post again

If that doesn't work she will have to go to a specialty clinic for a rhinoscopy

Sound to me like she needs it now.

Star is acting fine but in my heart I am very afraid. All the research points to a tumor. She is not getting any better on the AB. The mucus is only on one side. I spoke with my vet last night on the phone. We will be going to BBH next week and when we get back she will go to the specialty clinic for futher testing. Star is my heart. I am not ready for this.

I wonder if there is a piece of rice up there since all this started after the rice episode. I hope you can get this resolved soon :grouphug

This is what we hope. The more I research the more afraid I get. I pray it is just rice. Please let it be rice. :( She seems to be feeling fine.

It DID start right after the "rice incident," so I'd be more inclined to suspect that. Rice is sooo small, it could be lodged up there in the sinus passages, and causing her symptoms.

Try to relax at BBH, and, hopefully, all will be well!

Oh, Linda! I just realized this is Star and you! I'm so sorry to hear ya'll are having problems. Remember that it's human nature to always think the worst possible scenario when we don't know what's going happening. It's very curious that this all started with the rice incident. So, it sounds like there is a correlation. Try not to get down. Fortunately there are specialists there in Charlotte, and they do know greys. Hang in there, and have fun at BBH. Hugs to you and to Star. Tiger and Junior send wags to you both.

This is my first post but hope it helps. I had a German Sheppard that had the same issue. He lived at least 4 more years after it started. The vet assumed it was either a piece of grass or a tumor. She said if it was a tumor, they usually go down hill pretty fast. They did a scope of his nose and never really found anything. I wasn't will to spend the hundreds of dollars on a more extensive scope. My wife was the nose wiper and we usually had snot on walls from the sneezing. We eventually had to put him down due to other issues, so we never really learned what the issue was.

She is feeling fine. I keep going back to it started with the rice eating. It was a very large bags of rice. I can just see the other dogs watching her and her trying to eat it all before they got any. Thanks for your post, I feel a bit better.
