MP_the4pack Posted January 20, 2009 Share Posted January 20, 2009 We went to Red Bank to see Pearl's internist once we got her BP down a bit and her out of immediate danger. I am waiting to hear back from all the tests we did to see if it's her GN or a pheo. Dr Ward is her physician there. She said that Pearl's general health is excellent. (no weakness or hind end issues. No liver problems, or neurological problems. No breathing or joint issues either. She's active and basically feels good). I came right out and told the vet that if it's a pheo I'm going for surgery because I'd rather her die on the table trying to correct the problem than me come home from work one day and find she stroked out earlier in the day and maybe suffered for hours. She said that although an adrenalectomy is a risky surgery, they do enough at Red Bank that she feels Pearl would have a good chance. But.....that's if it's a pheo. If it's glomerulonephitis, we only can manage it with meds. She's on 18 pills a day now (7 different meds). And unfortunately, with the increase in dig and the addition of atenolol, her appetite is dropping. So, as soon as we get the dig level back, I'm hoping it's a tad high so we can drop it back down. I'm thinking that might help her appetite. So far I've spent $1300 . Good thing I have insurance. I hope they cover a good chunk of that! It's a good thing I wuvs you Pearl!! I'd be happy if my having gone through it would keep you (and everyone else) from ever going through that. Will keep pretty Pearl in my thoughts and prayers. What is glomerulonephitis? Both kidney disease and adrenal tumors can cause hypertension. This is the type of kidney disease my Pearl has. She was diagnosed last year right around this time. So far, so good. tbhounds Posted January 21, 2009 Share Posted January 21, 2009 I friend of mine had their grey's Pheo surgery performed at R.B--she recovered beautifully. It was initially diagnosed because her heart-rate was soaring out of control--the cancer was pressing on her vagal nerve. It was a very tricky surgery but, that was over a year ago and today she's doing well--she's 13 now I'm assuming you had an Ultrasound performed?? Seems that our greys are a breed that unfortunately sees more Pheo than others---I lost my heartdog, Jim to Pheo a few years ago By the time it was found it had already grown into his venacava--sadly it was not surgical. Since losing my Jim a have heard a of 3 other greyhounds diagnosed with this cancer---this very rare cancer---gezz, as if we don't see enough other cancers already I hear ya about the $$$ but, at R.B you can be assured good care Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

So she just about sees only specialists. tbhounds....thanks for the reassurance about the surgery at RB. We've done both ultrasounds and CTs and they can't see it. Granted the CT was 2 yrs ago. I need to show my husband this thread as I honestly think he feels we're the only ones spending as much money on our dogs than anyone else. We've been relatively lucky up until Nov 08 but since then we've spent $4,000 on finding an answer to a mysterious illness and getting our Grey well from a bacterial infection. Just trying to figure out what was wrong costs $3000 (different doctors, different hospitals). She was only 5 when she died. In Jan my 6 yr was sick, being so gun shy from losing Topaz just weeks earlier I took her immediately to the hospital. $1000. In April, the 6 yr old had bruising that was possible hemangiosarcoma. Turned out to be only a bruise. Another $1000. In July she had a fever of unknown origin and a spontaneous pneumothorax. Spent 2 weeks at U of Penn. $7000. The last death in our family was my Doberman back in 2000. She'd had surgery for a slipped disc and then these so-called specialists over-dosed her on Prednisone. We rushed her back to them in the afternoon and they tried to do a transfusion but we ended up getting a call at 3am saying that she'd passed away. She's with me forever though. I had her cremated and she's sits on my bedside table with a pic of her. I've never gotten over her death and as I sit and type this, tears run down my cheek.
