Guest laceyj Posted December 21, 2008 Share Posted December 21, 2008 My neighbor and friend Di, and I have always helped each other out with animal care. I've always felt nearly as close to her dogs as I do my own and it's the same for her. We often joke that between us, it's possible we qualify for 'kennel' status. She has/had 4 and I have 5 with a rotating 6th and sometimes 7th. Well this past Thursday we lost one, her greyhound Kiona. Miss K, as I referred to her, was a very beautiful red brindle and she ruled the roost. At 13 she ran with the youngsters (1 female and 2 male mutts, named Robbie, Jesse and Bosley) and egged them on in their rough housing. Bouncing around the wrestling pair barking to keep their momentum going. She often would wander into the living room and stand in the middle of the room barking. Just as soon as everyone else came running to see what was going on, she would trot off to the den and her favorite bed. Still warm from the body that had just vacated it! She always got her way, one way or another. She loved nothing more than to lie in the sun. Any given day you could find her laying on the grassy knoll in the middle of the large fenced playing field. You could call her from now through doomsday and she would come in when, and only when she was good and ready. Extremely shy in her early years, even worse than my Bandit, she blossomed as her pack grew. Gaining strength from the fearless Robbie, learning from Jesse to play with abandon, and in return teaching Bosley that some bipeds could be trusted. She was the third greyhound to live next door, Casey and Cruise blessed our company before her. In fact it was my neighbor who first introduced me to greyhounds more than 20 years ago. It's hard not to get hooked. Miss Kiona will be sorely missed by her canine and feline siblings, her mom, me and all who knew her. Run young, healthy and free Miss K!
