For what it's worth, it seems rather rare for anything to actually be found on MRI's of seizure pups. I wouldn't do the MRI either. Make sure you give the Sodium Bromide time to kick in before you lose heart if he should have anymore seizures before it kicks in. If he has any side effects in the first few weeks, take heart they usually fade, as the meds work more efficiently. My Henry is on a high dose of Phenobarbital, and his side effects have as far as I can tell 100% dissapeared, including his excessive hunger. Not much else you can do but deal with it the best you can. From what I've read so far, it seems that most seizures are usually caused from epilepsy and I'm sort of doubtful that we'll find any other cause for his, even with further testing. Maybe it's just that I haven't found a real cause for my migraines and so I'm not really expecting to find a cause for Phaelin's seizures either. Both of our situations have felt so similar......and frustrating. I talked to the vet about the different ways of administering the meds, the side effects, how often, etc and the sodium bromide seems to be what might work the best right now. Of course, that's not saying it will work for Phaelin, but if it doesn't, we'll change the meds to something else and hope that will work. I've had to give my migraine meds time to work (although they really haven't yet ) so I know it can take some time for Phaelin's meds to work too. Luckily, Phaelin's seizures only occur every 2 weeks or so, so I'm hoping the meds have time to kick in before he has his next one. Thanks for everyone's support......it means a lot. If my memory serves me correctly, it takes about a month for Sodium Bromide to reach a therapuetic range, so if he has a seizure in two weeks, it does not mean his medicine is not working, it will just mean the med needs more time, and hopefully will stop the next one due two weeks after that. Hopefully the medicine will work. I hear you on the testing. The specialist we were sent to was GREAT, but EXPENSIVE. They are just a couple miles from NHAH. You may never find the cause, but if you can find a cure or solution to help him, that is what matters! We will keep Phaelin in our thoughts and prayers! Guest snakes Posted December 17, 2008 Share Posted December 17, 2008 Bummer....i'm afraid we had a bad week here too FedX had two seizures in one day luckily nothing like phaelin's our's are focal seizures. I appreciate you sharing what you are going through with testing and meds, we seem to be following each other. FedX and I are returning to the vet this monday to have some staples out (a whole other story), so i will be talking to the vet then about what to do. LBass Posted December 17, 2008 Share Posted December 17, 2008 Oh bless you, what a difficult situation. Piper is taking both Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide. The Potassium Bromide is essentially the same med as Sodium Bromide--the Bromide is the anti-epileptic drug in both. Piper has been on both drugs for over 5 years now. Bromide tends to build up to a therapeutic level very slowly. Generally it will not reach it's stable level in the blood for 3-4 months, though you may well see improvement before that. At the moment, Piper's seizures are coming more frequently than usual. The vet and I both suspect that his level of bromide is low and that he needs a dose adjustment. I've sent blood to Hemopet to get levels on both his meds and the vet and I will talk again when the results are in.
