Figs Dixie Babe

Today at 10:50 am Figs Dixie Babe was assisted to the Rainbow Bridge.

I did not share this with a lot of people but in March of this year Dixie had

developed a lump it was just like Eric's and I knew in my heart what it was.

It was confirmed to be cancer. I hate that word so much!!

Dixie was my first foster that I had volunteered to foster for AAGI. I was

bound and determined not to become a failed foster mom. Then at a volunteer

lunch the organizers asked for all the failed foster families to

stand...there I was sitting all alone. I went home and told Dixie no one

could love her like me! Thus I flunked fostering and can proudly say I was

now a member of Failed Fostering 101.

Dixie was her own girl and played by her own rules, she was bossy and often

told the little young ones what she thought of them and it usually wasn't

nice. She reminded me of the cartoon "Maxine" just a crabby old lady. She

was not one to snuggle and got annoyed when you tried. She was not an

outgoing greyhound in fact she was a very shy girl, she did not like going

out to meet and greets, she did not enjoy car rides, she did not like

strangers in the house.

A funny story about Dixie was when my neighbor put up a satellite dish.

Dixie was in the backyard barking and barking and barking. I could not

figure out what it was until I looked and saw that my neighbors had put up

"the intruder" on the side of his house. Dixie felt it was her duty to tell

"the intruder" to stay right where it was and not even think about moving or

coming near us or she was going to have it for dinner. Well apparently it

worked because that satellite dish never attempted to come into our yard!!

It took a lot for her to trust anyone and there was less then a handful of

people that she allowed to get close enough to her. The people she trusted

the most and without hesitation were Jody and Tiffany Brown. They were both

at her side today when she breathed her last breath.

We let her go here at home where she felt safe and comfortable. The other

greys Georgie, Nessie, Pistachio, Kit & Daily were all in my bedroom whining

behind the closed door wanting to come out. Now this is the amazing part

and I can say this from what I heard or what I should say what I didn't

hear. I believe when Dixie's soul left her body the other greyhounds knew

and there was complete silence from the bedroom. I mean not a sound!

I knew in those moments of silence she had returned to God. (Psalm 24:1 The

earth is the LORD's and everything in it. The world and all its people

belong to him.)

Dixie has joined Eric who I lost in September. Losing two of my babies in

one year is heart wrenching.

I want to thank all of my friends for there support during this time. But

most of all I want to thank Jody and Tiffany Brown for being there to hold

me up and let me cry so many times during this difficult time. Dixie loved

Tiffany and Jody and they loved her!

I want to also thank Dr. Halverson and her vet tech Susie for there

wonderful care and compassion.

I love you Dixieland! The funnest greyhound on Earth!

Mommy

Oh Teri, I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet Dixie. Take comfort in knowing that your pretty girl is at peace, pain free and running once again with the wind.

I do hate cancer. It is the thief who robs us, everyday, of those we love.
