We had the conference call and here's what was determined: Chinghis most likely had an allergic rxn to something and his body's auto immune system went into overdrive trying to get rid of it. The swelling that occurred reduced blood flow to the face resulting in some very minor decomposition of the skin on his muzzle which got infected. The antibiotics and 2 weeks of prednisone should take care of all remaining issues and this should be a bad dream. We discussed what could have triggered the original response, and they walked me through the top 35 triggers - all negative. They say that we will likely never know. If, after the prednisone has been discontinued the swelling reoccurs we have 3 possibilities. Starting with the least likely 3 Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever - highly unlikely. He had a complete tick panel done 2 weeks before this all began and it came back 0.00. There was ice on my car over the weekend so it is just too darn cold for ticks. Also, there has been no reported case of Rocky Mountain within hundreds of KMs of here is a very long time. The specialist says he had to bring it up, but he would rank it very low. I have the technical names of the next 2 at work - I left them in my papers on my desk, so I will describe them an update tomorrow 2 There is a medical condition whereby if an animal has a tumor residing internally, it can trigger swelling and skin issues. Chinghis's vet and I again looked through all of his yearly exam notes - absoluting nothing indicates this, but then again there aren't always signs, are there?? . The only way to prove this would be to schedule a full set of X rays and MRI's and examine him inch by inch attempting to find a tumor that may or may not be there. And, as I brought up, what would we do if we found one? We would continue with pallative care, treating the symptoms and adding pain meds. If he seems to be in pain, we would do that anyway. Apparently, this condition does not exhibit if the tumor is located in a limb, only if it is nestled inside an organ. So, I guess for this one we pray. 1 There is another medical condition ( again, I'll name it tomorrow) whereby an allergic rxn will trigger waves of reoccurring swelling and infection. If this is the case ( determinable by a quick biopsy of the skin in one of his face lesions) then we are looking at long term pred usage. As long as it's not # 2, I'm OK with it. So, we wait out the 2 weeks of prednisone, see if we have a reoccurance. If we do, it's a nose biopsy and a tick titer. If those are both negative, we pray and watch to make sure that he is not in pain. Rickiesmom Posted May 1, 2008 Share Posted May 1, 2008 I haven't posted much to this thread but have been watching it closely, and join others in hoping the antibiotics and pred will clear this up once and for all. If the infection hasn't been cultured it might be worth doing to ensure it will respond to the antibiotic Chinghis is on. I had a recurring issue with infection in a cat's eye socket (eye had been removed before I got him). Turned out he was resistant to the antibiotic he'd been on - once we switched, the problem went away. Sending continued prayers this resolves easily now.
