Softee Scared Me Half To Death Last Night

Recommended Posts

Softee got up about 10 pm and could not walk, she lost the use of her back legs and was bouncing off of everything. I did not know what to do at first but sit beside her and pet her. Finally I got a towel and used it to give her support and got her back over to another bed - she was under the cutting table. When Dave got home from work (I had called him) she decided she wanted to go out and there is Dave at 11 pm in the yard with this towel holding Softee and she is back and forth and he had trouble keeping up with her. She came back in the house and decided she wanted treats, they get a large milk type bone when he get home from work. She did not eat the bone but did eat some soft treats. I tossed and turned all night worried about her but when we got up this am she was not as bad but still wobbly. I am wondering if she had a mini stroke or did her legs fall asleep.

How old is Softee? One of my greyhounds had a spinal cord infarction when he was three years old. Symptoms were the same, no use of his hind legs. I took him straight to an EV who wanted to put him down. The next day I went to a specialist who said he would recover and put him on prednisone. He was up in a day but very wobbly. His back legs remained weak and sometimes he would drag a rear leg for the rest of his life. But he lived nearly 12 long and happy years. In the end the legs just would not work any more.

I wouldn't want to speculate but Softee will have plenty of prayers coming her way. I can only imagine how scary it was for you. :hope:hope:hope

Softee was 14 on August 2, 2008. I know she is on borrowed time, but she is alert and very responsive.

Did not eat her regular food tonight but I did get her to eat about 1 cup of Nutra Dental. My gang thinks that the are treats.

She is still very wobbly and I hope she will recuperate and we have increased her glycoflex up to 1/day instead of 1/2 day

Adding my prayers for your sweet ol' gal. When Phoenix (who's 15+) went through a spell of severe wobblies in Nov., the vet had me start her on a low dose of Pred., and we played around with the dosage and such for about 1 month, and then was able to wean her off the steriods. :)

I would like to second the low dose of Prednisone. Hobbes had dramatic improvement last summer from treatment with Prednisone. He had difficulty standing, was wobbly while walking and sometimes his back feet knuckled. The Prednisone helped tremendously. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

She may have canine vestibular disease. The world would be spinning for her--I wouldn't eat either. It can come on very acutely. Did she go to the vet? Take a really good look at her eyes and see if they are darting back and forth.

We are taking her to the vet this morning and will tell them about what you are saying about the Pred. I am afraid they will tell me to send her to the Bridge which I really don't want to do. She is alert and knows when Dad goes near the treat container she will get a treat, she is still begging food off of us. She did eat about 1 cup of Nutra Dental last night for dinner but turned down her regular food. She loves her liver brownies and eats the soft treats.

Softee is in the hospital they are running tests and x-rays. I asked about the vestibular and he said no she did not have it. Predisone will be discussed after they go over her. There was blood on Thursday that I did not mention and today again in the car. While at the vets Dave discovered a cut on her butt by the bony part and that is where the blood is coming from. The are going to suture that up also hopefully under a local. Have to wait for a call will let you know more as soon as I do or when I pick her up.

It is arthritis and old age - x-rays did now show any disc problems like the first vet thought. Thursday when she came down hard on her butt she caused a split on the bony part (she is bony anyway) about 1 inch long. They decided to suture that and found out it was a little infected. She has a drain and is on rimadyl and an antibiotic. She was walking much better when we picked her up from the vet and now we have to see if she will eat for us to give her her meds..

Beryl,

What about those eggs like Softee likes? Or maybe Satin balls? Or how about liver brownies? Usually doesn't resist any of these. Maybe some tuna?? I remember somebody's hound on the GRTB board loves sardines. Anything Softee wants, she should have. Saying prayers for your sweet girl.

We got her to eat her buffet again. Pedigree & Gravy Train, liver brownies, ham off of Dave and my plate, cookie crumbs and a piece of fried potato. She is standing longer than before. Draining from the drain and Dave tried getting a pad under her but she scooted off of it. We have pulled the egg she like out of the freezer and of course she will have eggs for breakfast and what every else her little heart desires
