gracegirl
You might want to try a t-shirt in addition to the e-collar....that way if he's scratching with a back foot the nails can break open the skin. Either that, or put booties on him. It sounds like a few days of misery will be worth it in the long run. Is there any cream you can put on him to relieve the itching? Like I said before..... He gave us some cream and a spray, non steroidal, so I hope these work. He is Mr. Itch..... The optho vet cannot see us for 11 days, I hope that is not too long to wait. Guest taylorsmom
Oh poor Monty!! I know you guys have really been through the wringer, Karen, so sorry to hear about that. But I know you are in good hands at U. of PA. Is it demodex or sarcoptic mange that you are dealing with? If so, the ivermectin usually does a good job of decreasing the symptoms fairly rapidly, so hopefully he will be feeling more comfortable very soon!! I could never get my greyhounds to tolerate an e-collar, is he doing okay with this? If not, the Bite-Not collar works really well, without the dome around the head!! Rita freaked out when we tried the e-collar last Feb. when she was chewing on her "happy tail"!
Houndtime
I am sorry you and Monty have to go through all this. It is hard to watch them be uncomfortable. If you have a regular lock collar or can buy an inexpensive one, I used that to thread through the e-collar and it will hold it on better. After a very long time, I realized that I didn't need to keep the e-collar on for walks. If he is walking, he can't be scratching and the walks became less of a struggle. Guest Sassifrass
I'm so sorry to hear about Monty and send you both best wishes. Isn't it wonderful, though, that you live so close to Penn? I live in the Phila. suburbs and am so grateful to live within commuting distance of such a wonderful vet hospital. Hugs to you and Monty! Guest greytmonty
Monty may have raced in Florida but your chances are they were raised in another state and trained in another state yet before he came to Florida. He whelped in Iowa and raced in Alabama and Florida, so I was thinking Fla was closest to Lousiana.... who knows? I'm so sorry to hear about Monty and send you both best wishes. Isn't it wonderful, though, that you live so close to Penn? I live in the Phila. suburbs and am so grateful to live within commuting distance of such a wonderful vet hospital. Hugs to you and Monty! I agree, we are so lucky to have such top vets so nearby. They have resources at their fingertips and so far the care is FAR SUPERIOR to the fancy shmancy suburban place that gave Monty Cushings! Rita freaked out when we tried the e-collar last Feb. when she was chewing on her "happy tail"! The two parasites that may be the culprits are: Dipetelonema and Onchocerca, the vet does not know which Monty has but the treatment is the same for both. What is a bite-not collar? thanks! Guest CindiLuvsGreys
I'm so sorry to hear about Monty. I have a cat that had a TERRIBLE time with itching. I took him to a skin specialist vet in your area. If you want his name feel free to PM me. He was great. He put Malcolm on a special pill, I can't remember the name but it was only in the test phase with cats but had already been approved for dogs. It worked great and I weaned him off it with no further problems. Before I took him to this vet he was yanking his fur out with his teeth. It was horrible. Guest greytmonty
One side effect to watch for is lethargy, yet the vet gave him a shot of Benadryl to try to avoid an allergic reaction, and then he got another 75 mg of Benadryl tonight for his itchies. He is EXHAUSTED but I am assuming it is the meds and not a side effect..... So glad to hear that Monty didn't have any adverse reactions to the shot. Looking forward to meeting him at Dewey! It will be fun to see you again. Where are you staying? PM me.
