Weird Eyes!

Recommended Posts

I looked at Brother earlier today and his eyes were "stuck". Open, but the third eyelid was covering half of each eye - the devil eyes they get when they're asleep. It went away and I didn't give it another thought.

Tonight it happened again a couple of times, and seems to stay that way for a few minutes.

Any thoughts????

I'm scared.

Will have to get some saline.

It doesn't go away at all. And when he closes his eyes it's really obvious they're all sunken in.

Vet does not take after-hours calls on weekends anymore, so it will have to be a trip to the Referral Center about an hour away.

Does not seem stressed. Seems perfectly normal, except for the "devil eyes".

As I typed the original post, Sandy and Dave said that it went away. (sorry for the confusion) But it only lasted a minute or so, just on one side, and then both eyes are now and have been ever since "weird" and sunken.

He is fine every other way. We led him around the house by calling his name and he walked fine. Wags his tail, etc. Very responsive. It's just his eyes.

Hi MommyOf3,

I have a similar issue with my boy, Rusty. After a million tests and thousands of dollars they believe he has masticory muscle myositis. It's not common in greyhounds but breeds like goldens, german sheppards, & labs; however, it is possible for greys to have this disease. It should be realitively easy to treat with meds (prednisone) but Rusty's has been a really rough case. Besides the fact that he was on prednisone before testing so his test came back inconclusive. The vet says it is a classic text book case with his symptons though. Of course, I don't want to scare you as it could be something minor but maybe you'd want to mention it to the vet when you go. Just thought I'd share my story and if it helps that is greyt. Good luck and keep us informed...we'll be keeping Brother in our thoughts and prayers that he gets better soon!

Beckie :-)

Cats get this when they have a heavy worm burden - I don't suppose it could be that simple? They lose the pad of fat behind the eye as they lose condition and the eye just sinks a bit. They're fine once they're wormed.

The other thing I'm wondering is if it's allergies, or something which is causing him to have dry eyes. Certainly try the saline if you can get some.

But yes, let a vet take a look.

I was just searching the internet for this type of problem as my labs eyes did this last night and again today. Sometimes she even looks like she is "wincing" them. I am going to try and get a picture.

We did some experimenting with him. His eyes appear normal if he is trying to "pull focus" on a treat or something. But then they go right back to the other way.

Our friend Sandy who was here when this happened was able to contact her vet. She said that since he's normal in every other way, she doesn't feel it is an emergency situation but that we should definitely have him looked at on Tuesday when our normal vet is in. She's thinking maybe an eye allergy or irritation, but without knowing him or seeing him, can't be sure.

Here's a pic...

That's exactly what Bellas eyes were doing. Now that I was trying to take a picture, they are normal.

I'll be interested to hear what your vet says.

Hmm... I agree that it doesn't appear to be an emergency, but it sure is odd. I'll be watching for a follow-up to see what your vet thinks!

No idea what's going on... But interesting to note that it's in both eyes, as opposed to one (so that means he didn't scratch it or anything). I wouldn't want to sit on an eye problem though. Not only can they be painful, but eyes are so important. Definately take him in to be seen if at all possible.

No better today at all. He tries to rub them from time to time too; didn't do that yesterday. And there's some discharge as well. He usually has very dry and hard "eye boogers", but these are the opposite, and tinted green. Wondering if it is an eye infection of some sort. I just think it's odd that it is both eyes, exactly at the same time. I feel so bad for him.

I will be taking him in tomorrow as soon as they can see me. Will post back with what they say.

Thanks for all of the replies! :wubsite

Looks like Horner's Syndrome, especially with the eye sunken into the head. Although, I don't think Horner's presents with eye goop...

My new boy Snickers had something similiar however his third eye lid was bright red. It did affect both eyes at the same time. It was an allergy and after 24 hours on eye drops they were much better.

The picture and description remind me of something that happened to Riley almost 2 years ago. I searched and found my old posts about it. http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php?showtopic=124943&hl=

We never did know what caused it but maybe there is something in these threads that can help? I hope so!

Lucky, my mix, has something similar right now. Nearly every year she has "goopy eyes", as she has seasonal allergies and a tear duct that blocks up. Unfortunately, this year, her right eye is swollen, has lots of teary discharge, the third eyelid stays half extended, and sometimes the eye is squeezed shut, like Popeye. She's been to the vet and has gotten steroid eye drops for ~5 days and benedryl, and those don't seem to be helping. I'm going to call the vet's office today to see if I need to take her back in.

I just found out a couple of weeks ago that she has LP, so I really don't want to have to put her under if the tear duct needs to be cleaned out.

If I find anything else out that would be useful, I'll post it.

Vet did anesthetic drop and looked around, then did the stain and didn't find any abrasions. So she wants to treat it as an allergy and gave us some neo poly dex drops to use 2-3 times daily. If we don't see results in about a week, we're supposed to go back and they'll do bloodwork to rule out other stuff. I'm guessing she's not thinking infection because his temp and everything else was normal. She asked if he was sneezing or coughing and he's not, but....

Plus, of course, since he was trying to "take it all in", his eyes didn't look as bad as he was doing a lot of focusing.

I can't say I'm real confident about this, but we'll give it a go and if it's still just as bad on Friday, I'll have DH take him back in. (I will be at MGA's event in the Chicago area and leave Friday am -woo hoo!).

Hopefully the drops will make his eyes more comfortable.

Thanks again for your support and suggestions. Will post an update in a few days.
