Guest mdwolfen
I have a 10 year old grey named KC. As of late he seems to pant a lot. I kkep the temp. in the house around 75. He does not run around the house or anything. He just lays on the sofa and pants, a lot. Nonstop. And this is hours after he has come in from outside. On the flip side, I have a 7 year old(Echo)who never pants. Should I be concerned for KC? Any thoughts? Lilysmom
It's the weather. I have 2 greys, my female is 9 and she has been panting her head off. Like you we have the AC on 74 with a fan blowing in the living room to circulate the air but she still pants. As long as you pup is not larthargic and is drinking ok I woudln't worry. You could always get a hand towel soak it down, ring it out and rest it on her to cool her down. My male is 7 and isn't panting as much as my female. Batmom
Mmmmmmmm, if he's really panting all day at 75, I'd get him into the vet for a check of heart and lungs. Cynthia
Dogs pant when they're anxious, hot, or in pain. It sounds like a comfortable temp in your house, and it sounds like he didn't just move to your home, so if nothing in the environment has changed (constant thunder storms or rain? or a new pet?) I'd suspect pain.
Guest mdwolfen
Well, they are both due very soon for there yearly vet visit. If it does not get worse Then I will wait till then for the vet to look at him. Thank you all.

My bridge-boy PUP panted when the pain from his Osteosarcoma cancer had his bones aching. Please don't make your dog wait around in pain - get him to a vet and have him checked out. Guest Greysx4
My 10 year old boy also starting panting more than I thought was normal while in the air conditioning. I tried giving him pain meds for several days to see if it was arthritis pain. That didn't make a bit of difference, he still panted. I took him into the vet and had him checked, they couldn't find any reason for it. I even emailed Dr. Stack to see if she had any ideas of something we may have missed at the vets, she said she normally associates excessive panting with Cushings Disease. My boy has none of the symptoms of Cushings and appears to be completely healthy. I'm thinking I'm going to take him back into the vets and have a geriatric blood/urine work up done on him just to be safe.
Guest KennelMom
To the vet! Panting that can't be attributed to a cause (i.e. heat) should be investigated. As mentioned earlier, it can be due to pain or stress.
Guest wrldruler
Our dogs usually pant for 2 reasons: (1) They are hot (2) Their tummy is upset. Is he showing other symptoms such as drooling, bad gas, rumbly tummy, eating grass, etc? - Chris
Burpdog
As of late he seems to pant a lot I'm assuming this is new behavior and did not occur in prior summers. Burp did that. I waited two days and took him to the vet. He was in congestive heart failure. I'd run him in for a check up. Guest mdwolfen
I can't figure this dog out. He just came in from running around in 95* heat and is now laying upside down on the sofa and has not panted all day. I am going to call the vet anyway later and make an appointment. Guest mdwolfen
Just an update. KC was in pain. He lost all use of his rear legs and no feeling. After seeing the neurologist, it was decided to let him be at peace. He crossed the bridge at 7:30p.m. yesterday. Thank you all for your help. He was so loved and will be missed, always. KC, no more pain like I promised. Love good boy.

Guest SusanP
Oh dear, I'm so sorry! Please be comforted knowing you helped ease his pain. And think of the love and happiness he had with you. It's been 7 weeks since we let our Simon go under similar circumstances. The pain eases, I promise.

Guest cestbarb
I'm so sorry for your loss and I share your pain. A similar thing happened to us, our beautiful 8 year old Maddie had been panting excessively and drooling. We took her to the vet and after numerous tests including an ultrasound, the vet diagnosed kidney disease " glomerular nephritis". After two months of testing, trips to the specialist, kidney diet etc, she developed other symptoms including pressure sores that defied stitching and an infection in her front leg that swelled up like a balloon. We made the painful decision to let her go, and were there when she went over the rainblow bridge last Friday September 7th at 9 AM. She left peacefully and is now free of pain. I'm sure Maddie has met KC by now and they're running free together chasing butterflies. Like you I'm a newbie and I'm so grateful to have Greytalk to turn to. Guest mdwolfen
I am too and thank you. We do not know what caused this to happen to KC. The specialist gave a few causes but without doing tests he could not pinpoint the cause. But after hearing what the BEST case senario would have been for him no matter the cause, I made the choice to free him. I saw no point in putting through those tests For the out come that would have been anyway. I mss him. Tomorrow is his 10th birthday. But I know he'll have all the cake(and donuts, long story) he wants with no pain to enjoy it with.
