  1. I think bandage changes with Jake was $32 something. Of course that was at an e-vet clinic that wouldn't allow us to switch the care over to our regular vet. At our regular vet it was one bandage the whole time the stitches were in and then another bandage for a few days after the stitches were removed. Never paid for an office visit with bandage change. Once the stitches come out the wound should be all healed up so water therapy won't be needed then.
  2. Leash walk! The stitches will probably stay in for a couple of weeks. Leash walk when they are in and leash walk for a week after they are out. Keep the bandage clean and dry so you won't fight with infection too. Most of the time with stitches in the feet, the bandage will stay on the whole time until the stitches come out and usually another bandage after they are out for a few days. Don't go removing the bandage unless you are told to. I don't have a problem going back to the vet for bandage changes, they do a better job then I would be able to do that's for sure. If you can't request vet's at this practice then switch.
  3. Our groups picnic was today and they were doing Microchipping. I meant to ask about it but by the time I did they had packed up and left. Are your hounds/dogs microchipped? What is involved? Will the chip stay in place? Any thoughts, experiences you have would be great.
  4. Fantastic news!! Now Lacey pig out on your food!!
  5. Glad everything went well. Maybe she will eat better with those nasty teeth gone. Keep us updated.
  6. Kira had osteo in her knee. She had swelling a few months into her diagnosis. The vet said that the swelling means the osteo is spreading.
  7. Any large dog is at risk to develop osteosarcoma. It wouldn't be fair to say that greyhounds have a higher rate of osteo then any other dog. It may seem that way because of boards like this. People come here for advice or help. So there are many posts on repeat subjects, one of them being cancer. Not every large breed dog owner has a message board to run to for information. So osteo striking in other large breed dogs less reported. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. My overall thoughts is that osteo is probably genetic. That gets expressed at all different ages, young or old. We don't know the real reason yet but Dr. Couto with Ohio State is doing many studies to find out what causes osteo and has made wonderful developments in extending the life of hounds diagnosed with osteo. Greyhounds are wonderful companions to have. Health concerns (that may or may not arise) shouldn't distract you from your decision.
  8. I think they are over vaccinated as soon as they hit the adoption groups. I know my group vaccinates them as soon as they come off the track; no matter what their paperwork says. It's the same vaccines that they get at the track. The hounds are dewormed and I'm sure the track/kennel uses something to control fleas and ticks.
  9. My kids have been on Heartguard Plus for over three years now. They've never had a problem with it. Yesterday they had their chewable tablet and come today they both have soft stools. Is this a side effect of the med? The only other change was some pizza crust and a dental stick. But they have had that before too and it never caused a problem. Any thoughts?
  10. She needs to talk to the vet. The vet knows what the poor hound's feet looked like, that should be proof enough. Jake has cut his pads multiple times running on grass in the yard. I have know doubt that they could do some real damage if they were to run on concrete.
  11. Fingers crossed the kibble soup works. The carafate sounds like a good idea.
  12. How soft is kibble when you give it to him? I know with some brands if you let it sit long enough it expands and falls a part really easly.
  13. It sounds like her balding is seasonal. Every summer Jake loses all the hair on his butt and thighs. It comes back in the winter and is nice and thick come spring.
  14. We use melatonin for fireworks and thunderstorms. But regrowing fur, I don't know about that one.
  15. Wonderful news! Hot water works just as well and budget friendly.
  16. I agree with Patti. Anything wrong with his throat? Did the screaming start right after his surgery in OSU; or is this recent in connection with the surgery for the skin graft?

    Oscar

I'm so sorry. I will miss Oscar's diary updates and his pictures with the Hulkman. Run free Oscar.
  18. Jake used to have a sweet spot on his shoulder blades. He would get both of his back legs going and he would fall on his butt.
  19. Prayers and good thougths on the way for Oscar.
  20. From what I understand the racing kennels bring in their own vet or the vet that works at the track to do the vaccinations. So that certificate he came with is proof that he was vaccinated for rabies. Around here nobody accepts the rabies tag; they always ask for the certificate.
  21. Empty tummy? Did they catch her mouth/throat with the tubes from surgery? Is this new for her? I would be inclined to call the vet at least.
  22. As far as the Heartworm pills being effective for intestinal worms, they are supposed to be. But then Carolina still managed to get hook worms even though they get the heartworm meds every month.
