  1. Hey, Kyle, I was just talking to Susan so I know you've talked to her already and are planning on coming out. The event itself is our big picnic, with food and drink and greyhound merchandise. If you want to just check out the available dogs there, let the people at the registration desk know that you talked to Susan and me. Lunch is $12 per person if you want to join in while you're there. Looking forward to meeting you and your wife. You can bring Roxy along, too, if you want!
  2. She may indeed be there. I don't know who's where right now, so I don't know which fosters will be out tomorrow. But we will have fosters there, for sure. We would love to have you and your wife join us, Kyle. Please do email Susan Lemon about late registration. It's not too late. And then ask for me - Kate - when you get there and I'll introduce you to some folks.
  3. Welcome from someone else who's in the DFW metroplex. There are a few of us here. If I can answer any questions for you, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm with Greyhounds Unlimited but there are two other groups that operate in the metroplex and they are all good. I stay neutral whenever I can here on GT. Good luck with your decision. I waited until I got a house, too, but I've since seen greyhounds in friends' apartments and condos and they do fine there. Just something to keep in mind if you start getting impatient for that 'grey fix". Speaking of greyhound fixes, if you really do want to wait to adopt, but want to get a better feel for the breed, go out to the meet and greets the groups have - they are always posted on their websites - or consider volunteering with a group. Having a greyhound isn't a pre-requisite to volunteering. And the groups always need helping hands with something. Welcome, again, and good luck!
  4. It's crazy expensive, but when I started having trouble with Pro Plan with my first two dogs, I switched to Wellness Core. After I lost Mango and Takoda, I went back to Pro Plan, but at the beginning of the summer, I started having problems with my current two hounds with loose stools. So I switched back to Wellness again, this time the Mix 5 Complete Health. No more loose stools, although I do have 3 gassy hounds - normal gas, not excessive. I just keep forgetting to get yogurt to add to their menu. Yow will get good advice here from others who know of less expensive but equally good foods. I just stick with Wellness as long as I can afford it because I honestly don't have the patience to explore all the other possibilities until I really need to.
  5. Just seeing this myself. Sending lots of supporting for Ekko, and for you, too!
  6. :grouphug :grouphug One from each of us here.
  7. I didn't realize that just editing my original post wouldn't bring this back to the top for everyone sending good thoughts to see. Dr D said they were all worried last week, since I'd had such a run of bad luck last year with Mango and Takoda. Pretty bad when everyone at your vets office is holding their collective breaths on a result, too!
  8. Thank you everyone. With the power of GT behind us, those lumps don't have any choice but to be B9. Baby boy is doing a little better today. I didn't think about both lumps being removed at the same time. They are almost in the same place on opposite sides - of all places, just outside the armpit. So it hurts whenever he moves. And since he can't climb up into his chair when I'm in the office, he cries from the living room. At least I can lift him up on my bed at night. Once he got there last night, he was quiet. He's eating, and taking his medicine, and "the lights are on" again in his eyes, at least. I know he will be all right, but I'm a typical mom, feeling his pain right along with him and wanting so much to take it away....
  9. Good thoughts and prayers coming from Dallas, too. Hope that it's just that the vets want to be sure and that it's really nothing.
  10. I forgot about the "B9". Yes, I'm praying for that, too. Thank you everyone!
  11. Ruger has had these 3 lumps on his belly since he came to me. One was hard and my vet and I were thinking it was just a sebaceous cyst, as I could express it and get cheesy matter out of it. The other two were soft, and I was figuring fatty lipomas. My vet suggested that when I brought him for a dental, he would remove them while they had him anesthetized. Well, today was the day for the dental and I reminded Dr D about the masses as well. When he went to remove them, he said that aspiration showed fibrous tissue in the hard one and one of the soft ones. He is going to send off for a biopsy, and he made sure to remove good margins just to be safe. If you could spare some good thoughts for my big guy, protector of the girls and me, that these lumps prove to be nothing but what they originally seemed to be, I would appreciate it. My poor bud is loopy tonight on pain meds, but he's finally settled down on the sofa to sleep it off. Thanks. 9/2 Update: Dr D called yesterday with the results: both lumps were B9! Whew, that was a looong 5 days. But thank you, GT, for the power of your prayers. Ru says: Thank Roo, too. Now can I get this tee shirt off?
  12. Welcome, Friends, We are here today to honor the memory of Braden, Rachael, Martin, and Pudge, four innocents who left us just when we were able to offer them the best of their lives. Remember them by the glimpses of happiness they showed us: Braden sitting up, ears perked, looking around him in interest at the people working to help him; Rachael playing "hide and seek", something we learned was a signature gesture for her; Martin discovering toys and proudly parading "his" donut for us; Pudge looking into the camera each time, looking unbearably sweet each time. In spite of the horrors they lived through, each and every one of their souls left knowing kindness, gentle touches, and soft words. They were, to steal a phrase from Beth Wade's jewelry, each of them "Loved One". Let their legacy be the discovery that we can come together, in a moment, as a united community, in support and love for the ones who need us most. No matter our personal beliefs, our individual means, the distance that physically separates us, we are One, in that moment in time that another needs us. I will not presume to offer you prayers here. You each have your own prayers for times such as these. I offer only the memories and the gratitude for the support of these and all the hounds who need us day in and day out. Hug your hounds, hug your loved ones, live each day with honor and respect and joy for all living things whether they are human or animal. Let others learn from our example and perhaps someday, losses such as those we remember today, will be but a memory. Braden, I ring this bell for you. Spread your wings and fly, Sweet One. Our love supports you. Rachael, I ring this bell for you. Spread your wings and fly, Sweet One. Our love supports you. Martin, I ring this bell for you. Spread your wings and fly, Sweet One. Our love supports you. Pudge, I ring this bell for you. Spread your wings and fly, Sweet One. Our love supports you.
  13. Oh, Melissa, I'm so sorry to hear this. Run free, Sweet Ruby! Find Izzy and Dash, and Mango and Takoda, and they will show you where the softest clouds and the yummiest treats are! And to you, Melissa.
  14. Here's hoping that the event you are getting a premonition of is far, far in the future. Hugs to you and Poodle!
  15. Dang. I was so hoping that things would turn around. Run with the wind, sweetheart, for the sheer joy of it. Run happy, and healthy. Know that you were loved by so very many in the short time we knew you, and will forever be in our hearts.
  16. So happy to hear this! Isis, stop scaring your momma like that.
  17. I'm just finally able to get back to this thread. Thank you all for your replies. Now, why didn't I think of going to the Manuka honey site to see how to dress wounds? I'm not sure if I'll be able to do that since the sores are over the joints themselves, particularly on the shoulders. Tough place to wrap. She'll end up looking like a mummy! If I get some time, I'll experiment with ways that I might be able to bandage, but honestly, I was looking at the sores today and they seem to have shrunk just since yesterday. She's doing really well from what I can see. Thank you again, though, for being patient enough to answer me!
  18. I have some Manuka Honey here to use for Nedra's pressure sores. I finally had time to test it out today. I cleaned the sores with a little peroxide - I know not to use that constantly, but I hadn't cleaned them since Sunday and I didn't have time to put her in the tub and do water therapy. So, after I let the peroxide foam a bit, I cleaned them again with water and then applied the honey. Should I be covering the wounds after applying the honey? I thought not, but figured I'd ask. The honey lasted all of about 5 minutes before she set to work licking it off. Someone suggested to me that EMT gel might be better in this case, given that the sores are all in accessible spots. I don't want to put her in an e-collar if I can avoid it, and I think the Bite-Not collar won't really work for these spots either. I know the water therapy is the best, but I can't do it every day right now. Too much going on between my day job and getting things ready for the auctions for GU. The wounds are healing. I can see that. The ones on her shoulders just looked a little iffy to me today. The big one on her hip is looking pretty good, and I was looking at the pictures taken of her when we first got her and can see that all of the wounds are healing. I just want to be sure that we don't get any setbacks. I'm open to suggestions...
  19. Thank you for your replies. Now I know what direction to look in for information for her. I appreciate it, as always!
  20. Posting for a friend - I'm not sure whether this is a seizure or indicative of something else. I've been searching H&M on and off throughout the day as time allows, looking for info on seizures since I don't have any experience myself with them. She basically is looking for information on what to watch for going forward, or someplace to get more information. "The Sunday afternoon that this occured, my brain wants to tell me that I saw a slight hitch in Hardy's step with his back legs in the morning when I let them outside. I didn't think too much of it because sometimes when he runs outside in the backyard, his legs are wobbly for a few minutes coming back inside. Around lunch, we were eating and Hardy was playing with one of those Kong balls (the ones without the treats). He stood up to walk across the floor to me and he froze. His back legs started shaking and turning inward like he did not have control over them--yet trying to stand and trying to sit down all at the same time. I mentioned it to my husband as I was getting up to help and started trying to help his legs. Then, we realized that the ball was stuck on one of his teeth. I pried that off and then we helped him lay down. I got on the phone with the emergency vet people and stayed on the phone with her for the duration of what seemed like a seizure/stroke at the time. The seizure lasted about 4.5 minutes and he never really seemed to lose conscienceness. He kept moving his head a little whenever we would move from him a bit. Then, after about 15 minutes after the event, he seemed fine, just exhausted. He took about a two hour nap after that and has been fine ever since. He hasn't had any muscle issues or anything and is bouncing off the walls again." This is a relatively young dog, 5-6 years old from what I can remember. I'll keep searching through things here in H&M, but if you have any thoughts or suggestions, they would be appreciated. Thanks!
  21. There are a lot of deerhound-greyhound mixes that I've seen show up in your area. His whiskering sort of looks like Takoda's did. Short and wirey around the face, and longish across the back, but as you go further down along the flanks, it becomes soft and short like a greyhound coat. Whatever he ends up being, he's quite handsome. Welcome home, Mr Dickie!
  22. I have no words to help, so I will just send and more
  23. I, too, have bed hogs, and enjoy having them sleep with me. I manage two, and me, on a Full bed. I tend to be a lazy trainer, but my Angel Mango learned just from me repeating every night "Move over". She would try for my spot every night, and every night would get told "Move over". She also learned "get down" the same way, and that came in handy the night I rolled over on her and she growled at me. Voice of God "get down" before my eyes were even open kept me safe and her from doing it again. My Angel Takoda took the lazy way out: he got in my spot every night, and every night would grin at me when I said "move over". That was because he knew I would then move him over. He didn't have to work at it. He was the kind of dog I could safely do that to, though. I have two new dogs now that I'm teaching the same way. Ruger has already figured it out. He actually waits for me in "his" spot. Delta, I just have to touch her and she moves. Don't know whether any of this helps, but thought I would share my tactics. And, above all else, Welcome to GT!
  24. Keeping Whitey, and you in my thoughts today. Been there, done that, and know what you are feeling.
  25. The Bite-Not collar might not work for a hind leg injury as it won't inhibit their ability to reach that part of them. The pants idea is probably the better way to go. I used the homemade Bite-Not for Mango after her front leg amputation, but toward the end of the healing, she'd gotten crafty enough to figure out how to bend so that even with the Bite-Not, she could reach the lowest part of her incision! Don't underestimate the determination of these guys when they have an itchy incision.
