  1. I apply Advantage Multi for fleas, heartworm, and every other worm.... once a month, year-round And I put Preventic Tick collar on quarterly... they're good for 3 months.... year-round... better safe than sorry
  2. yes, Medium for greyhounds. I bought Large and it was tooo large... went back to Medium... and my boy was mid 80's - 90 lbs
  3. just to add my $ 0.02 I've never seen anything like retaliation peeing that your BF is concerned about.... ME, personally, I prefer boys.... they are much more affectionate.... girls are more independent... I have one of each, and have met plenty of both sexes, and find the same holds true for majority of boys, and same for girls... with each having the occasional exception... i adopted my boy first, and my girl a year and a half later... she is alpha... she is very vocal, very independent, and stil has to have me in her eyesight, but my boy is literally attached to me, and if i leave his sight, he is inconsolable until i ge back... he sleeps with me, he is the only one to kiss me, he is such a good boy, he doesn't argue when i have to trim his claws, give him baths, give pills, he eats anything you give him.... my girl is the pickiest eater I've ever met, though cooperative when we need to trim claws, bathe, etc... don't discount the boys because of your BF... go in open hearted, and you may be surprised who you fall for... or who picks you..
  4. The Best!!! Remy wore one for 3 months after anchilles' tendon tear surgery http://www.medivetproducts.com/medipaw-sizing.php
  5. My Leyla is Alpha Dog and she does not tolerate puppy energy at all! It's sad cause i would like to pet the puppies, but it gets ugly me trying to pet them and hold her back... she's quite nasty about it... She only does it with other breeds, though... she hasn't met a greyhound she didn't like... so the way ii deal with it is to keep her away from other breeds as most of them have that puppy energy... old seniors are the exception... she doesn't mind them...
  6. You can't PM until you hit 50 posts
  7. I just called Belmont Lake State Park and it seems this Sunday will be our last as they start charging admission on April 6th. Starting April 7th, we'll be back to Mill Pond Park in Wantagh.
  8. We walk every Sunday @ 11am. We currently meet @ Belmont Lake State Park (exit 38 on Southern State Park puts you directly at the park entrance & parking lot). When Belmont Lake start charging to enter, we move to Mill Pond Park on the north side of Merrick Rd in Wantagh (exit W6W on the Wantagh Parkway) and we park on the street. In the summer, when it starts to heat up much earlier, we meet @ 10am. Whereever we meet, the looks/questions abound when seeing 20-30 greyhounds walking so nicely. We love talking them up and I feel it's a better way to introduce the breed than M&Gs @ pet stores. We are always asked if we are a club, or an adtoption group rescue. We got our dogs from all over the place (GG, LIGHT, GAA, GF of NJ). We always invite newcomers out, so we would love to have you... It's a nice 45 minute leisurely walk, after which we give the pups treats... And we try to meet up for dinner once a month, without the pups. Anyone reading is welcome and we always have new additions to the group... it's a challenge remembering all the people and pups' names as we grow.
  9. Welcome to GT! I worked in Manhattan for about 20 yrs. I finally quit a year ago. My commute is a lot better now... Living and working on Long Island...I don't do dogparks either... we have a group of 20-30 greys that walk every Sunday morning in our area... the MeetUp group should do walks in central park, rather than dog runs... more control and less chance of problems... good luck! and don't forget the pics
  10. both of mine refuse breakfast from April until September, or so... I think it's starting early this year... I already see signs in my boy having less and less interest in dog food (and they're raw fed).... but he will not turn down ANY PEOPLE food.... so maybe he's leaving room for any possible treats... also, I think his age may play a factor... he is now 10 and seems to be showing his age... he has always had a tough time in summer... heat and humidity really affect him and his appetite...
  11. don't worry!!! they all get it!!! even my cat got it, and I never taught him to use it.... he just saw my german shep use it over the years and one day i came home and the cat was on the other side of the glass slider... I had to lock him in his room while I was at work or he would have been out all day -- my cat loves everybody and he's decalwed, so i didn't want any harm to come to him... now in a different house, with different dogs... the greyhounds picked it up right away.... but i suspect my boy growls and may have nipped the girl when she came in from outside, and now, when he's inside, and she goes out... she stands on the outside of the doggy door and whines to be let in... i have caught him growing at her a few times when she's coming in, and let him know that is unacceptable.... I don't know why he does it.... and I don't know why she's reacting this way, caue she's the Alpha between the two of them....
  12. I don't think they want handwritten notes. Who can read some of their chicken scratch???? The policy is that it must come from the vet's office, not you. That's all. there is nothing against you or your dogs.
  13. I was on VPI for 10 yrs with my german Shepherd. My rate about doubled over the years. I'm with Best Friends Pet Insurance now. I love it, and would never own a dog without having him/her covered. I just got $4400 back on a $5600 claim for Remy's Achilles tendon tear surgery. I'm expecting another $500 back for subsequest meds & bi-weekly bandage changes over 3 months. Leyla's dental surgery wasn't covered (I didn't know) so no more dentals for us... it cost me $1000. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with them. I put in claims for everything, except routine vaccines. With the exception of the dental,. they have covered everything (mutliple corn hullings, partial tail amputation, various bouts of colitis, lipoma aspirate, etc..) I pay $650/year for both for the silver plan I get an additonal discount for prepaying the year's premium upfront. ($325/each = $27/mo) I would definitely reccommend them!! and they're affiliatd with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah (which is heaven on earth for animals)....
  14. Thank you so much for the info!! Remy is finally starting to put some pressure on the foot... he is still bandaged b/c he developed a sore at the incision site, and he can't get any physical therapy until the sore is completely healed. It's healing, but so so slowly... I have been scared of reinjury ever since i read this thread. I spent 3 hrs researching over the counter braces this morning upon your suggestion. I am down to three inexpensive options. I will discuss them with my SO tonite and order one. Dog Hock Holder $22 on Amazon Fits the natural angle of the hock to prevent it from hyper extending. Supports the joint medially and laterally. Allows your canine friend to move easily and without strain on the joint. Back on Track Therapeutic Dog Hock Wraps $58 on SmartPak Back on Track Therapeutic Dog Hock Wraps special Ceramic Fabric uses your dog’s body warmth to relieve pain and inflammation. Constructed of a neoprene outer shell, Back on Track infused the interior of the wrap with their state-of-the-art Welltex fabric containing ceramic powder. The ceramic reflects your dog’s natural body warmth and creates a soothing infrared thermal heat. The unique ceramic fabric creates gentle heat, which is a well-recognized method used to relieve and heal injured muscles, joints, and tendons. Designed to comfortably fit a dog’s hind leg and hock area, the four attached Velcro™ strips let you quickly fasten and remove the wraps, as well as adjust their snugness. These leg wraps are ideal for both prevention and injury recovery. Rear Dog Leg Hock Splint $80 on Amazon The Walkin' Wheels Hock Splint will accommodate injuries to the heel and stabilize the lower rear limb while keeping the paw free This type of splint is ideal for Achilles Tendon problems and immobilization of the Hock joint Do you have any suggestions of the above three options??? After I see how Remy does with the one we buy, I will see if he needs the more expensive custom orthodic with motion control (~ $500).
  15. you must have a new greyhound. It takes a good year for them to be comfortable enough to really trust you and show his true personality. This first year is full of changes they're never been exposed to. They have never had people come at them and pet them constantly, and they've certainly never had anyone kneel over them while on their bed, or hug them. he simply didn't know what you were doing invading his space, and reacted out of reflex/instict to tell you "back off" Please do not lose hope, but understand that these are very different dogs than the other breeds who live with humnas from 8 weeks of age and understand our body/vocal language better than retired racers. I did the same thing with my Leyla in the first month (or two) of her adoption and she reacted exactly the same way. I took it personally at first and gave her space for a week. She did the same thing with a young boy who she didnt' know and who was warned to not hug her, but b/c he only knows his boxer who lets him do anything he wants, he didn't listen and he got the same growling & barking in his face. It was just a warning, not a precursor to anything worse. Fast forward one year, and she let me kneel over her and hug her with no reaction. She just needed time to settle in and realize this is her home, she is safe here, and for her to understand human behavior. Your pup will get comfortable and learn these things in time. Just let him come to you for petting, always reward him for it, never raise your voice or hit him, and he will learn to trust you too... don't give up on him... I know it's unsettling, and you may be afraid, but try to understand the life he's lived prior to your adoption, and just be patient with him... they REALLY are like no other breed... and that is why they are so special...
  16. LOVED that video!!!!! Love that Tom!!!!
  17. I don't think it will be a problem.... sounds like the pup will have someone around so that he's not alone too long, and he'll look forward to anyone petting him and giving him attention... as long as feeding and walking are regular, i don't think others' schedules will matter much... thye sleep when it's quiet, wake up to greet the person coming home, some petting and attention, nap time again, greet the next person, etc...
  18. OMG!!!! My heart snapped reading about the pop and explosion.... My Remy i just now starting to use his leg after an Achille's tendon tear and surgery in October. It's been a looong 3 months, and he just had the splint removed,... he's on a soft bandage to transition him back to walking.... I am so worried he'll never walk normally again... but never thought the same injury could happen again on the same foot.... oh hell!!! I am so scared now of ever letting him run and injuring or tearing it again.... my BF saw the would at the incision site for the first time and asked why vet didn't just amputate, wouldn't it be easier on Remy? I thought he was just an insensitive jerk to even suggest it.... but maybe after three tears to the same tendon, it might be time to think about amputating... I don't think walking around with a torn tendon that has been repeatedly torn/injured, can be easy on your pup, even with a splint... My heart goes out to you... I'm so sorry this happened...
  19. my Leyla has a few toes where the webbing was ripped in the past, way before adopting her. The problem I've seen later on after this injury, is one of those toes getting stuck below the other. She gets really scared when this happens, and holds her paw up until you right the toes, and she cries, though i don't know if it's painful or just scary for her....
  20. My Leyla has always been an independent alpha girl. She never slept with me, but after 2 yrs, she's decided it's quite nice to sleep with Remy & I... she will decide in time what she likes best... don't worry about it... you can entice her by bringing her bed in the lviing room and feeding her treats there...
  21. CONISTENCY is key! Always feed first, and pee/poop immediately afterward... best time to get the bowel contents moving... and give enough time for all to get out... walk briskly also to get the bowel contnts moving... good luck
  22. I'm sure it depends on your area, but b/c of the anesthesia, it costs about $1,000 for us on Long Island.... Leyla lost a tooth, turns out all three roots were still in the gums, so they had to be surgically removed.... and while she was under, they cleaned and extraced two more teeth that were going to break like the first one.... that cost me about $1,000 and i just found out that my insurance doesn't cover dental disease so i was not reimbursed a penny for it.... that HURT!!!! Not getting anymore dentals unless teeth break.... but mine are raw fed and their teeth get cleaned from all the bones they chew.... I've heard brushing daily is a GREYT way to keep the teeth nice and heathy, and avoid spending all that money on dentals.... good luck
  23. i feel jipped that i don't have a kisser.... I would give anythig to have any one of my babies kiss.... don't train it out of her....
  24. Remy had corn removal surgery. Within 6 months, the corn came back. Nothing will make these evil corns go away, short of toe amputation. But you can't amputate when so many toes are affected. My heart goes out to you and your pup. It is just AWFUL to not be able to enjoy walks with him.
  25. I am so sorry for all the heartache you have been thru in the past few weeks, but especially for losing that beautiful bouncing cowgirl.... My condolences to you and Rich. Claudia
