  1. I miss her too... I've been thinking opf her since I knew she left last November... Hugs to you Christine
  2. Steps from doggie door to outside have been removed and replaced with a 12 ft ramp, and covered with a heavy duty rubber matt to prevent any slipping, even in wet weather. Both dogs are navigating it well. I found the temporary fencing and will be installing it this weekend. With much more limited space in the dog run, there won't be room for anyone to turn around and run anywhere. Indoor flooring has been replaced with heavy duty rubber tiles, with a carpet layer on top, No slipping indoors either. Raised furniture has been removed, dog beds and twin mattress directly over rubber carpet tiles. Doggie door only fits one dog at a time. Leyla has no interest in the outdoors, and only uses the door to do her business and come back in. No danger of them trying to go for it at once. They've had a good week of this new configuration, I've been home with them due to SANDY, and watched them closely. They don't interact much together, they're no bonded. This weekend I'll put up the temporary fencing. I've made all changes with Remy's safety at the forefront of my mind. I don't forsee any accidents for the remainder of his recovery. I love this boy as much as parents love their skin kids. You can be sure I wouldn't do anything without ensuring his safety first. Thank you again for the suggestions.
  3. That's a good idea I hadn't thought of... At GiG, they use construction fencing to set up lanes for the speed run. Even though it would look like hell, it's cheap and would probably work as a temporary solution. I know it... will see how they do next week and may shrink the dog run with this plastic fencing... will have more poop in smaller area to pick up (more often) and I can certainly deal with that... Thanx again for the idea
  4. That's a good idea I hadn't thought of... The dogs' room only has their dog beds and a twin mattress... not bringing the crate into the house as Remy's ENTIRE leg is in a cast and he has a hard enough time sitting down and getting up with this cast... he's finding it very difficult to get comfortable... I do not want to add to his stress... This week, he's going to day care because he has to get his meds every 8 hrs... next week and the rest of his recovery time might be spent with the doggie door locked so they can't go outside unsupervised... leashed walks for potty breaks... Thanx for the posts... MOST people can state their concerns & opinions without being jerks...
  5. I ASKED FOR CREATIVE IDEAS NOT YOUR JUDGEMENT. DIDN'T YOU LEARN: IF YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO ADD, ADD NOTHING AT ALL? "SHEESH!!! " THE NERVE....
  6. Remy had an unfortunate accident two weeks ago at a lure coursing event on Long Island. He tore all 5 tendons that make up the Achille's Heel, in two places, and had surgery to repair the tendon. He is to be kept at a very low activity level during recovery. I have moved the day bed and couch from the dogs' room and put just the mattress on the floor, and dog beds. I do not want to crate my boy who was a blood donor for 4 yrs before being retired at 6 yrs old. I imagine he lived in the crate at the vet hospital 24 hrs a day, except for potty breaks and donating blood. When I adopted him, he had never been in a house and didn't know what a couch was. It took a full week to get him to come on the couch. Once he realized what he was missing out on, he abandoned his crate, and I gladly put it away in the shed. He's been with me 3.5 yrs and has never been in the crate since his first week. I know he wouldn't mind sitting in it, but I do not want to lock him in it for 7 hrs/day. He has learned to go potty whenever he feels the need, as I've always had a doggie door and fenced-in backyard. I don't want to force him to hold it, and I don't want to force Leyla to hold it either. He has a full leg cast/splint but he can still get in and out thru the doggie door. He only goes outside to potty. I am concerned that he may see a squirrel and try to chase it. Might be a silly question. but does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on how to curb his interest in chasing squirrels while outside? As I said, I do not want to crate him or lock the doggie door. Interested in other creative ideas I haven't thought of.
  7. unless it's amputation of the toes, corn removal surgery is useless. Remy had corn removal surgery and the stupic corn came back within six months.... and he got a second on the other front foot as well... With Wyatt having corns on all four feet, I would not consider corn removal surgery or amputation... it's too much... I would bring him to the vet to do routine hulling and wear the cushy paws all the time if you see they help him... TheraPaw booties certainly help Remy with his corns.... and I just learned how to hull them myself at Dewey... so I'll be saving $150 pop for vet hulling.... Good luck with Wyatt's pain mgmt...
  8. I think he wants to have a good sniff of the cat... Sounds like he's not been allowed to do so.... I would keep them separated but able to see each other for a good week to two weeks (baby gates 6 inches of the ground).... this way he can get used to the cat's scent, see him, and learn that they can co-exist... When not around, I would keep them apart in separate rooms so they can still sniff each other under the door... that's the general rule of thumb for cat and dog introductions.... I would also work on traingin the cat, not just the dog.... so the cat learns it's not ok to instigate.... Good luck
  9. I just want to add that I am so sorry for you BRIANAMAC and JENNIFERK. I am hoping you both can help your boys to feel more comfortable with you, and in your homes, and I do hope you don't give up on them. They may have some issues now, but if you can stick it out with them, they are such a joy when they get over it and worth the wait!!! AS JENNIFERK recommended, BRIANAMAC, please call your adoption group and get them to come over and help you in your home. They will want to make sure Boo is going to be happy and healthy in his forever home with you. My thoughts are with you and will keep looking for positive updates. Claudia
  10. Hi Winnie! Welcome to GT. I live in N Massapequa. We have quite a few folks on the island meeting up at Mill Pond Park in Wantagh every Sunday at 10am for greyhound walk around the pond. After the walk, we fawn over the ~20 greys in the current group and give water and treats... it lasts about an hour to 1 1/2 hour. We're always inviting new grey parents to come join us. We wish you would too... Looking forward to meeting you and Wiki & Billy.
  11. Aimee, that was such a wonderful thing you did for Michael and for Boo. I am not even 40, but I always worry what would happen to my kids (Remy & Leyla) if I should have some unfortunate accident and go before them... The gesture of bringing Boo to Michael in the hospital, and on his bed in his final hours in hospice, allowing him to go in peace holding his girl's paw, brought tears to my eyes.... I would want nothing more than to feel my kids' paws and carress their ears in my last moments on this earth.... Thank you for giving Michael those last beautiful moments and for giving Boo a loving home for the rest of her life....
  12. Have you tried googling "what goes into dog food?" the results will shock you. When i adopted my first greyhound 3 yrs ago, he had diahrreah for 3 months straight. They sent us home with the same kibble he was eating at the kennel, so if he was healthy there, there was no reason he should not be healthy at home with me, on the same kibble. The vet couldn't figure out why he wouldn't improve. We tried prescription kibble, sensitive stomach kibble, grain freee kibble, pumpkin, boiled chicken & rice, boiled hamburger and rice, medicines, powders, etc... nothing woked. i researched what goes into dog food and was forever changed. What I learned made me sick. I will never feed any pet of mine dog/cat food again. I feed raw and home cooked food with fresh ingredients now. That day i spent hours on the internet changed me for the rest of my life. I suggest digging deeper than just the ingredients on a label. And make your own decision whether to believe what you read or not.
  13. Hi Mike & Melissa. Claudia with Remy & Leyla here. That Fred & Ginger are a couple gorgeous houndies!! So glad you made the decision to chip . Be patient while they acclimate to you, and to each ohter, and soon enough, they'll be best buds... GReat seeing you agaain @ GIG and will see you Sunday @ GAA picnic. Owe you $$ for chinese
  14. OMG... how happy are they??? I wish my two played together.... instead, my boy is playful, but my girl is not...
  15. On Long Island, we have a local butcher (Armellino's) who sells only animal-grade raw, not human-grade. He grounds the entire carcass, bones, organs, and all, into different weight rolls. I feed this raw ground mixture, along with hearts, gizzards, & liver from meat/supermarket (chicken, turkey, pork, or beef). And for chewing/teeth cleaning, they get pork & turkey necks. They are not just happy, they are THRIVING. It is so good for them!! Their don't have bad breath, their teeth are white (at 8 and 9 yrs of age), their poop is small, hard as rocks, and doesn't smell, they don't stink up the house with gas, and they look fantastic. I wish I had know about the raw food diet when my GSD was alive.... he would have benefitted from it greatly, instead of eating W/D and sufferring from skin allergies hiw whole life. Congradualtions on the change and you will see how wonderful they feel on it...
  16. I've used Frontline for many many years, on my GSD and on my greys.... The rule is DO NOT wash for 2 days BEFORE or AFTER applying it. In other words, bathe dog, wait at least 2 days, and then aaply Frontline. Or apply Frontline, and wait at least 2 days to bathe. Vets told me same thing when I started out with it. If she doesn't need a bath, don't give her one.
  17. that made me tear up! they are so perfectly matched, physically, and spiritually it seems. My girl is so different than my boy. I brought Remy to the kennel to pick his new sibbling, but he gets along with all greys. Leyla, on the other hand, picked me. She came straight to me and refused to leave my side. So much for Remy picking.... they don't cuddle or play together, but he has definitely learned to be more confident from her.... and that WAS the reason I wanted a second... LOVE seeing your two so comfortable and happy together
  18. I can't believe the response I got. I didn't think there were many who fed the raw supplements like I did. I wish I'd thought of it sooner. They were sitting in my pantry, brand new, unopened, collecting dust since last summer. Now some senior and special needs greyhounds in TN are going to benefit from them and it makes me soooo happy to know that!!! Thank you all for the responses. Greyhounds and their people are the BEST!!!
  19. My 2 greys are raw fed. I had been adding Salmon Oil, Flax Seed Oil, and Joint Mobility powder to their food until last summer when they got very picky and stopped eating much the entire summer. I stocked up on these items and haven't used them again since last summer. I bought them from www.wholisticpet.com if you want to look them up yourself. They are excellent supplements for joints, healthy skin & coat. I have three brand new, unopened containers that I would love to give away, rather than throw away. Would anyone be interested in taking them? 8 LB - Wholistic Canine Complete Joint Mobility™ - All-in-one dog joint supplement containing a proprietary blend of certified organic, human-grade ingredients to support the health and longevity of your pets (Same as Wholistic Canine Complete™) with the addition of our own proprietary blend of a powerful, supportive joint formula for Total Body Health™. 20. I don't let the cat out unsupervised, by himself, or with Remy. I let him out yesterday, with Remy next to me the entire time, just so he could see how the doggie door works... i know about their predatory instinct, and would never put either of them in harm's way... My german shep learned to use the doggie door in less than a whole day. my cat learned to use it all on his own... that little stinker... and it's been a hassle ever since... i don't want him outside unsupervised as he is declawed and much too freindly... he wouldn't know what to do if he was attacked by the many wild animals in my yard... so i keep him in his room during the day, giving the dog free use of the doggie door, but i lock it at night, so the cat can be out with the rest of us... he's used to it... it was that way for three years before my 12 yo german shep passed the rainbow bridge.... the door flap isn't quite see thru... it's that brownish plastic... i left it open for him and the cat in his room this morning... i hope he gets curious and tries to go out on his own... but he really isn't the sharpest tool in the tool shed, that Remy... he's afraid of EVERYTHING!!! Remy is also traumatized by the window and will not stick his whole head out anymore... just his nose... awww i still feel horrible about it.
  21. REMY is fine!! Vet said he might have irritated the voice box, gave him some pills for suppressing the cough, but only took one before he stopped caughing!!! the pills were only to be taken if necessary... he's all better now!!! Installed the doggie door this weekend... Remy's not too happy with it... he doesn't understand it's the key to freedom... not waiting for mom to let him out... what to do? tried enticing him with bones, toys, etc... tried pushing him thru... he won't push the flap with his nose... will only go thru while i hold the flap open for him.... but that's not how it works... my cat know how to use it... why doesn't Remy?
  22. I have a vet appointment for tomorrow 9am... i just didn't know if i was overreacting... thanx for the reply...
  23. I made a boo boo last weekend and don't know whether it requires a vet visit or not... I didn't realize Remy had his head out the window when I parked, and accidentaly closed the rear window on his neck... he freaked out and thrashed about trying to get his head out but it was wedged in... of course as soon as i realized it, i lowered the window and he got his head out, but he had broken the skin on top from trying to get out... anyway, that's healed nicely, but he has been hacking coughing/trying to throw up constantly since then... I don't know if I did more than possibly irritate his trachea, or something like that... it's been a week, and he is constantly doing this loud hacking cough and although he doesn't usually bring anything up, he did throw up clear liquid twice... I feel so stupid and worried... is this something that a vet can help with or will it go away on its own?
  24. thanx Deirdre. I will try to come by the Syosset M&G tomorrow between 12-2pm.
