  1. Can you give Immodium AD to greyhounds? My new pup has had diarrhea since Thursday. brown water exploding out of him. he didn't want to eat for two days. yesterday, he got his appetite back and I fed him boiled rice with boiled ground chicken and beef. He wolfed it down. ate a can of tripe this morning. it's hardeingin to soft serve but he had an accident in the house not long after bkfst. went outside and went again. went on a walk and went two more times, he just had another accident in the house... soft serve. was tripe the culprit? how could he still have anything in him to poop? my vet isn't in until Tuesday evening. I don't really want to see other vets at the practice. I trust only her with my greys. I don't want to go to the ER. Can I give him immodium AD until he sees her Tuesday? I am desperate at this point.
  2. Ha! look what I found looking for the biggest dog doors online
  3. I could take out the flaps entirely, for a few days..... but that would allow all kinds of bugs to enter (mosquitos, flies, beatles).... Do you think it would be cruel / mean to shut them in the 10' x 10' room with the doggie door? only for a few days, and only while we're at work.... it's their bedroom and has a twin bed, a couch, dog beds, drinking water, running a/c..... I'm hoping the senior will learn by seeing his sissy use it. Currently, he stays in the living room and doesn't see her when she goes to the bedroom to go outside and come back in...
  4. How would you teach a new senior grey, and a bit stubborn, to use a double dog door? it's taking a bit longer than I thought.... he will NOT go OUTSIDE at all thru the dog door... he will begrudgingly come INSIDE if I hold the flaps up for him, but if I don't hold them up, he will not push them to come in. and it's been 4 days so far... steps/examples please....
  5. a few more pics to remember him by After OS biopsy Apr 2013 BBQ playdate at our house with 11 other greys 4th of July playdate Last week, eating ice cream Last nite alive, his aunties and unkas came to say goodbye to him our last family photo

  7. how do I go back and add pics in 1st post? I don't see the edit button there...
  8. Remy battled OS for 14 weeks before he could no longer tolerate the pain, and his quality of life became just about nonexistent. I am DEVASTATED. I don't even have the strength to write a full tribute. I believe his right rear leg was injured as a young pup, because he wasn't even registered with a real racing name (just Stone). He was never a racer, and was very timid, though not a spook. He ended up spending 4 yrs in a lab as a blood donor. When I think of the life he had, probably crated 23 hrs a day, I just want to scream! I've heard of these ignorant vets who think greyhounds aren't good pets, and the only thing they're good for are blood donors. It makes me cringe. When I adopted him at 6 yrs of age, he clearly had no idea what life was outside of a crate. He wouldn't come out of it except to poop/pee, eat, and get some loving. Then, he would quickly go back inside. It took a week to coax him out, and onto a couch. He clearly had never felt a couch and was scared to sit on it. It took another 6 weeks for him to muster the courage to jump up on my bed. He was scared to death of my sweet, calm, super friendly cat. After 3 months, he finally stopped shaking and running away from him. Over time, they grew to sleep together on the couch, or in bed with me. He was attached to my hip and always watched me anxiously when I left his side (and he couldn't follow). He was my first greyhound, my heart healer after my 12 yr old German Shepherd passed, and the absolute BEST dog ever!!! He was my goofy, happy-go-lucky baby!!We were robbed of at least 2-4 more years. I am so angry. If OS could be traced back to a human being, I would beat him to a pulp! He deserved so much more for his poor 6 yrs he gave before coming home with me. If I can gather the strength to come back and write more of a tribute, and post more pics, I will... For now, this is his Gotcha pic on 6/5/09 (http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=1596836) Rest in peace My Darling Remy. No more corns. no more pain. Run free. You changed my life. I will never be the same without you. I will always have a hole in my heart. I will never forget you. I hope we will see each other again.
  9. these dogs LOVE stuffies!!!! I'm quite surprised she knows what to do with the tennis balls, because the majority do not. they do know stuffies and she will play with it, shake it, throw it around and pounce on it, and may even kill it. if you don't want your stuffies possibly damaged, put them high up somewhere she can't reach them. I lost a few stuffies I loved, but ultimately, it's all about the dogs and if it made them happy, I came to terms with the idea that there were worse things they could have damaged.... buy her some and put yours away... you won't regret it.... you'll see a whole new side to Grace....
  10. get her some stuffies to play with in the house. a few with squeakers. she should get desensitized to noises by introducing her to them slowly. re: stairs.... are they carpeted? give her time... she'll come up.... play with her and her stuffies inside... throw them around for her... closer to the steps... then you go up the steps and come back down... all part of play... she'll follow you in time... always talk to her, use her name, praise her, in a happy high pitch tone... get her comfortable to your voices... Kissing is HUGE!!! you should be very happy and proud of her!!! more playbows, treats, toys, and plenty of time.... you're on your way
  11. how long have you lived there? have you seen the cat use the doggie door? my cat watched my german shepherd use the doggie door for 3 yrs before he decided to use it. Once he did, I put the cat in his room during the day, so the dog could use the door freely. When I got home from work, I would lock the doggie door and let the cat out in the rest of the house. When the dog needed to go out, I would open the glass slider for him. Weekends were spent like weeknights, and I would let him in and out as many times as he wanted. Anytime I left, cat went in his own room with food, water, and litter box. Could you do something like this so the dog could use the door as it's meant to?
  12. I think she's just trying to get your attention.... she's being cheeky..... my Remy does this all the time... I love it.... I think it's adorable... missed your updates on Dominica... glad to hear she's all you expected... she looks as sweet as can be... I still believe your BF is completely wrong about boys... but whatever.... you're both happy and that's what counts... don't discount those boys b/c of your BF's past experience with another dog (and different breed if I remember correctly).... more pics please
  13. I think it's a mixture of not being comfortable enough/fully trusting in you and possibly playing.... Leyla was with me 2 months when I leaned over her to hug/kiss her (on floor, not on her bed). She growled and snapped at me to let me know she wasn't comfortable. My feelings were hurt but after 6 more months, she had not problems with that kind of stuff cause she fully trusted me. That kind of play could also have really excited her and she could have been playing as she would do with one of her mates.... I wouldn't hold a grudge... just give her some time to really get comfy and fully trust you, and play with her by tickling her, but don't put your head in her belly until you fully trust each other.
  14. Just wondering what happened after the ER visit. Did they call the police and did the police try to remove Faye? Please call The Lexus Project if anything like this is happening. They provide legal defense for dogs, and especially greyhounds... they have 6 of them. I beg you Groundhog, please email thelexusproject@optonline.net or call 516.319.4249 and speak with Robin, even if this is not the way it's going down.... she can offer other help/advice. This is their website for more info http://www.thelexusproject.org/index.php Thank you and I hope you get well soon (physically & emotionally). Claudia
  15. I researched and found a place on Long Island and I'm picking some up tonite! I can't wait to see what it's like and let you know about the smell The canned tripe isn't that horrid to me.... but I've never smelled the fresh tripe
  16. I like my dogs to eat the bones, not just chew them, so I stick with pork, turkey, and chicken necks... but I have given them beef marrow bones in the past... I found that they didn't really get much out of them... besides the marrow.... they chew and chew but can't break them... so they give up...
  17. where do you get the fresh/frozen tripe? I've only found it in canned dog food form, and I feel like it's just as bad as kibble in that form... I stopped feeding kibble for a reason, and this canned tripe isn't very far from it in my mind... I would like to try the fresh/frozen but where and how much does it cost? I'm not willing to pay $20/lb to get it shipped....
  18. I just hulled two corns Sunday and posted yesterday about it. http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/299015-freekin-corns/ This doesn't look like a corn to me. They are usually hard and very painful to the pups. I don't know what that is since you say it's soft in the center.... corns grow outward, and based on the pics, this looks to be growing inward to me....
  19. It's painful to touch/squeeze, and pick/dig at it, but it's not painful, in the sense that it's not major surgery, and they don't need to be put under for it... I don't have that tool, but like I said, I like the nail nipper cause it's more precise and I can also cut the dead skin around the corn and clean it up nicely... when I cut around there, he doesn't even notice (he's asleep and snoring)... but when you're working on the corn itself, it's painful or maybe uncomfortable... the pulling reflex kicks in.... some dogs don't like anyone touching their feet, and those need a muzzle while doing this.... but in general, it's lots of pulling that I have to deal with, no GSOD or even whining...
  20. it's difficult to explain (especially since English is my second language and my BF constantly badgers me about my accent) but so easy to do.... Two wonderful ladies from G.E.M. showed me last year @ Dewey... and I've been doing it ever since... my vet charges $75/corn and she used to take him in the back where I couldn't see what they were doing... there is a page that shows it with pics... http://www.grassmere-animal-hospital.com/corn_hulling.htm but I use a toe nail nipper and dig it out... my boy fights me every step of the way cause it's super painful, but I have to do it for his good, so I just keep cutting around it slowly, and eventually get it all out... I use this since I don't have the tool in the above attachment and I find it works better can I can actually cut it out and the skin around it...
  21. no pic of the corn before.... it's a regular corn... hard and painful... but the one with the red underneath seems to bother him less than the other one... when he limps, he limps much harder from the right paw, and the bloody one is on the left paw... the clean coen is on the right paw... but his osteo is also in his right shoulder, so maybe he limps hard on the right leg due to combo of corn and OS....
  22. that's why the blood underneath? damn!!! It didn't seem much deeper than the other one, but that one has always been red underneath the skin/corn... my poor poor pup... he's such a happy boy and to see him refuse to walk breaks my heart, and it continues to baffle me that these small things can cause them such pain... and cause them to stop walking.... UNBELIEVABLE
  23. how do you know she's having acid reflux? .... even I had a hard time understanding what was coming up my throat, and experienced doc to tell me it's acid reflux.... never heard of it in a dog.... give milkbones someplace outside the bedroom if you don't want crumbs in bed... these amazing treats that I learned of right here (on GT) .... Remy will eat anything but if my Picky Picky Princess gives it the thumbs up, that's a BIG thing.... tripe sticks http://www.petfooddirect.com/Product/14638/Bingo-Buffalo-Green-Tripe-Stick-Dog-Chew-Treat and tripe pressed bone http://www.petfooddirect.com/Product/14642/Bingo-Buffalo-Tripe-Pressed-Bone-Dog-Chew-Treat last, but not least..... what is known as doggie crack in our house: DENTASTIX... http://www.amazon.com/Pedigree-Dentastix-Daily-Treats-Count/dp/B005M5Q9O4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1371500478&sr=8-2&keywords=dog+dentastix .... I only buy them from BJ's cause I get a bag of 40 dentastix for $13.50.... you CANNOT find this price anywhere else.... and I've done LOTS of research.... they go absolutely NUTS for dentastix and tripe sticks/pressed bones!!
  24. 100% with this.... same with Remy.... he was scared to death of my BF.... he comes off very harsh.... when he opens a a door, he throws it open... when he walks, he walks fast and hard.... when he talks, he talks loud and deep.... talk to him in that high pitched, happy tone... always repeat his name in a happy tone.... treats, yummy special treats.... play.... and my BF's secret weapon is THE EAR RUB.... he sticks his thumbs in there and moves them around... he gets Remy to purr.... I can't do it cause I have nails, so my BF is his only source for that special scratch/massage.... he adores my BF now.... even though he is still timid and comes to me always if we're both in the same room.... from another room, call him out in a happy voice and let him come to you to get a special treat/play/massage... and give it time.... it takes a good year for their true personality to come out.... to fully trust you.... but it's well worth the wait!!!!
