  1. i'm sure you will be happy w/ his product. i love the fluorescent yellow...when it's grungy looking a wet soapy sponge- wipe it down and it's brand new! what width did you get? they do soften up w/ wear, so don't fret if it seems a tad stiff at first..
  2. just remember that if your dog gets into a conflict w/ a feral animal and is scratched he will need a rabies booster.
  3. she may have picked up a bug at the vet. it does happen. rather than making an appointment call and talk to your vet first. he/she may say come in or prescribe something over the phone. maybe you will be lucky and this will be gone tomorrow.
  4. sounds like the activities in my back yard. annie has zapped one cat, the other big fluffy cat made it out of the yard and there were 4 muzzled greyhounds chasing it! annie helps herself to a snack when ever possible-----birds are her favorite. felix....duh? but on lead they are fine w/ rabbits, fox, birds and small non-snapping/barking dogs. there are hunters and there are hunters. as long as you don't encounter problems on lead, it's the breed...
  5. never a problem here w/ fl+ try boiled rice and chop meat for a couple of days. could be old fashioned upset tummy. is she eating grass?
  6. alligator clasp and biothane leads from K9noz.com. contact Bud, the owner, after you look at the web site. he has every weight biothane, he will help you find the right lead/weight. he also has a heavy heavy duty gripper leash which may work. i'm very happy w/ his work and they last for ever... also some obedience classes will not hurt. but good equipment is a must.
  7. agree w/ both. when i had salukis- who are notoriously bad eaters i finally decided dry kibble since they used to suck the juicy flavor off the kibble and spit it out. yes, tough love all the way....but they ate. no table scraps, no treats, just dry kibble. when they were boarded they didn't eat since the kibble w/ moistened and mixed w/ canned food. once i informed the boarding kennel about the dry routine- gobble gobble. but if i have a sick dog- it's steak, chop meat chicken, or what ever freshly cooked as if i was serving it to the humans. that's a different story. if your dog isn't terribly under weight then i wouldn't go gray over the situation and stick with one kibble that you can afford.
  8. comb the fleas out down the block, then bomb your house. ask your vet for an effective bomb. i don't trust the over the counter stuff. this is a good time to do a major cleaning/editing....
  9. i called the manufacturer- and asked that question. they said as long as the dog is dry it can be applied. and then the dog can go swimming once it's dry or appears dry. it's an oil that gently covers the skin.
  10. i was going to suggest pretreating her w/ the original dawn dish detergent. lather it and let it sit(10 min) and watch the fleas die! rinse super well, when she's dry then the frontline plus. try a flea comb in bright daylight instead and check all of your furniture and rugs. all you need are flea eggs that will hatch and you will be pulling your hair out. dare i say bomb the house? been there w/ my hypersensitive salukis. as long as it's aired out there shouldn't be a problem. do talk to your vet since your pup is challenged.
  11. use it all the time. i find it last at least 5-6 weeks. i use it from early spring, when the ticks emerge thru december. it hasn't been getting really cold until then. a good frost and you should be safe.....ha-
  12. i go 50/50....treats when they earn it- treats when i leave. dh feels guilty when he has his trader joe's cat cookies- the dogs get a treat as a result...grrrr
  13. felix has gone thru this on and off in the past. honestly, he has the most hair on his neck right now at age 7 with a plain buckle collar- 1"or the thinner lupine martingales. the lupine products vary in softness, so feel for the softer collars and throw it in the wash a couple of times if he needs a martingale. the only wide martingale that doesn't rub is laser cut silk lined made by mackenzie belts. if the owner of the shop wasn't so generous w/ her discount he wouldn't have it. i would call the manufacturer about the vectra and speak w/ customer service just to see if there could be a correlation between the two. if it is an allergic reaction to the vectra there should be more patches of balding hair? if it is his thyroid his coat in general would not look so go. if it's a sensitivity to his new food, he should have patches everywhere. so, it comes down to contact and wear. is he getting frisky on lead? is the old collar's lining worn? have you called your vet? a phone call doesn't cost. but if it's something else...demodex there would be red raw patches. have you tried a harness?
  14. i have the english/irish gh muzzles. much lighter to say the least http://www.muzzlesforgreyhounds.com/fish-tail-greyhound-collars.html is where i my daughter purchased them when she visited ireland.
  15. short nails and 6 ft neoprene runners by bungalow rugs. they have them at bed bath and beyond. find a 20% coupon. i use them in the car- they never slip on the leather seats. i recommended them to a friend for his dogs- worked....and they wash very nicely. my 91 year old mother uses them at her door ways- no skidding what so ever.
  16. exactly how long has this been going on? as long as the pre-4th of july celebrations? can you increase their morning and evening exercise? change your human workout to dog and human workout together? if it's early enough then the heat shouldn't be oppressive. btw, where do you live? can you rinse them down after a jog?- do you have access to a hose? feed them after their work out- not before. then a quick time to relieve themselves after eating and nite-nite all day long. also, if you do an after dark jog or fast walk, then feed, let out- you should have exhausted dogs. maybe that will help.how old are your dogs? a couple of walks won't get them tired enough to poop out and be good comatose greyhounds.
  17. can you describe your daily schedule. that will help everyone come up with some suggestions. and have you contacted your adoption group for support? they can be very good at that.
  18. don't nix your trip, try asking your adoption group for some references for a dog sitter. also, tbhounds response sounds correct. do some more research and maybe a consult w/ a different vet. and do check w/ your own physician about your rash! go for your last vacation as a couple, life will never be the same after the baby is born.(different, better, but take advantage of your planned excursion).
  19. i agree w/ let the air get to it. in general they will heal much faster and you don't have to worry about fungus developing. tis the weather- hot and humid...medicated foot powder takes care of fungus but it needs to get scrapped off first.(don't ask, been there w/ both dogs) felix is the king of cut pads and annie had an audition for princess of cut webbing have taught me a lot. for pads, nicks ,slices, etc i was only once w/ hydrogen peroxide to get the dirt out. only once, since it will stop the growth of new tissue. if i have saline solution i rinse it w/ that instead, it depends upon what i have on hand. then one application --a good size glob of a triple antibiotic and that's it. i will rinse it w/ saline if it looks pretty dirty but they seem to heal really quickly when left alone. medicated foot powder kept it dry- we use Ammends but Gold Bond is just as good. with the split webbing that was another story. my vet likes to develop scar tissue where the tear is. so 2xs daily i washed it w/ peroxide. up, didn't want it to do anything but scar and develop tuff skin. it was covered for one week- omg, bandage changes 2xs a day. well, annie at 10 bandages, she rubs the walls w/ her muzzle and i gave up on day 5. it's fine.
  20. hydrocortisone w/ aloe applied very very generously and something to stop the licking(muzzle). like diaper rash the air helps. it seems like they need to run their course. one of my dogs was prone to hot spots, allergy...so rather than washing him i used to rinse the irritant off w/ the hose and that was the end of his hot spots. one flea bite can cause it, mold, grass, something they are lying in can do it as well.
  21. heat, fireworks, summer, not getting enough exercise. it's hard to when it's hot. walkies very very early or very very late at night. reflective collar and a blinker on you helps. i wear a whistle at night. WOW- JUST READ NO AC AND IT'S GOING TO BE 100! sounds like me many moons ago. i used to escape to the delaware river and sit in it w/ my saluki. he swam, waded and did what ever else it took to cool off. will a neighbor let you hose your dog down ?? as to the throwing up, if it continues talk to your vet. she may be producing lots of stomach acid, that too can cut her appetite down. but ONLY your vet will know ....i always check in via phone. more times than less i have just written down some common sense instructions and saved a bundle. ??? did the 3 meals a day cut down on the vomiting? i have a friend whose male pukes all the time. he's on pecid ac and zantac(the acid not anxiety reducer) and something else. he's finally not puking...
  22. oatmeal based, if you can get some aloe in it...go for it. the main thing is rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse again. yes, your dog will have dandruff after, but that's true of many breeds with thinner coats. if you can get away w/ just hosing down and shampooing the dirty legs and head(my male always sticks his head under annie and gets a shower when she marks), then that's even better. if the water is too warm the greyhounds melt and lie down. the only breed that i have bathed that does that.
  23. sheets or a blanket will do the trick. just try to keep the car cool, pump the ac up and YOU wear a long sleeve shirt. the dogs like it cool.... safe travels! you can't use the hammock since you have a 2 door, like i have. i just slide the front seat up all the way, pop it forward and in she goes. hold the leash while you slide your seat back. the very quickly jump in, MAKE SURE THE LEASH IS INSIDE THE CAR! if you can fasten the leash to the head rest of the other seat that might be an asset while you are getting in if you feel it is necessary. another leash looped around the head rest will work. i personally have never done this w/ a new dog. i start using the stay command. you should give her enough time to find the seat before you get in yourself. annie stood for the first couple of weeks on the floorboard just wedged behind the 2 front seats. as you saw by the pic, she's fine now.
  24. i don't think your winters are as extreme as ours...if they didn't fill out they would freeze to death...
  25. test for worms but he doesn't look that skinny to me. it can take quite some time for dogs to really fill out and the vertabra often do show no matter what. it's their build and the curvature (roach of spine) is what makes them so flexible on turns. slow and steady w/ food, if he doesn't have the runs on his present food you can always add in dehydrated yams or biscuits(cookies) for treats. cheese used during training really puts on weight. but remember, it's the summer and dogs often drop some weight in the heat. don't worry, next winter they pick it up.
