  1. how about keeping her on lead with you in the house. this way you can show her what is expected. i do that with a new dog or a foster. when i cook in the kitchen i keep the newbee w/ me. close the gate and work on manners 101. once they get it in the kitchen, fridge, counter and garbage off limits then the rest goes pretty quickly. it's time you can give her lots of praise and attention. then eventually they learn to lie down near you while you do something idle. slowly the picture unfolds and manners develop.
  2. my dogs who were thunder storm phobic were always comforted by being near something grounded.....bathroom pipes, bathtub, the toilet, pumbing in general. i used to find my scottie is the wierdest places, like under the sink! a friend used to find her borzoi in the tub. do to the the changes in everyone's life he is probably more sensitive and reacting to not only the storm but all of the changes. it's a difficult period to introduce change, you are just going to have to carefully feel this one out so your new needs will be met.have you spoken to your vet about meds? remember your dog came before the baby and the last thing you want is a jealous or anxious pup around a baby.
  3. that looks exactly like one of the punctures that felix received which i tried letting heal naturally. i was at the vet for something else, he looked at it and said, "let me fix this properly". basically the wound needs to grow from the inside out, so he cleaned the new top layer and out came the staple gun. it closed up beautifully and we can hardly tell that vampire dog emily had struck again! 3 staples and the healing proceeded really rapidly, maybe 10-14 days. i just kept a no-bite collar on, gave his neck hair time to grow, and that was it! friends who have let pucture wounds like that heal naturally waited almost 6 weeks for it to fill in. since he is a brindle you won't have any scar. happy birthday argos!!!
  4. felix sez,"fooey to baby pools, give me the ocean!"
  5. check out jb pets, they have these wierd stuffed latex toys w/ squeekies...one is a monkey and the other a variety of monsters. felix who kills a stuffy in under 5 minutes has not destroyed these wierd toys yet. give him his own, have one ready to exchange w/ a baby toy. always be positive w/ your dog, remember his space has been invaided and you don't want any jealousy. my daughter played w/ her sqeeky toys in the crib, the big old pram and the car they were never left around. when she was on the floor she was on the go....at an early age. for some reason i remember she had more fun with oranges and grapefruits, pots and pans when she was on the floor. soft toys b.t.w. her first word...good dog! that's how much i praised old azim and rewarded him for not being jealous. also his favorite place was lying under the high chair waiting for fall-out!
  6. here's a suggestion which is a tad contary to the rest of the posts.... why not give your baby a space of his/her own- the corner of the living room? you as well as jupiter will sleep much better. babies make tons of noise in their sleep and often a parent will wake up to comfort them when they really don't need it. the worst night's sleep i ever had was when our daughter, as an infant, was in the bedroom. man do they make a racket!!! i also remember a friend whose baby had not slept the night and was 9 months old- they shared a room- she was never able to let her daughter learn to comfort herself. for naps hopefully a standing screen around the crib will work. at night you might just escape an unnecessary wake up or 2 and jupiter will continue to sleep in. very, very important especially with a little one in the house. or a loft bed with the crib and crate under it????
  7. i went thru the nipping stage with felix who also is a non-track dog. it was somewhere between 7-10 months. he used to chew, nip, nibble on my hand and arm when we were working in obedience classes. a no-bite and a quick squirt of water and he learned pretty quickly. i had tried the lemon juice/vinegar combo on my arms, a suggestion from the class teacher. mmmm....he liked it! so, one squirt from a water gun and that was it. as to muzzles, i broke felix in a little at a time by putting some peanut butter inside the muzzle and gave him yummie treats while he wore it. he started off w/ a female muzzle until his head grew...(pic of him holding the bouquet to the left). if it fits correctly there shouldn't be marks, but the foam insulating tape for garages works well for the sensitive skin. oh, the scabs and scrapes from that nipping stage! my older female grey basically taught felix NOT to nip at other dogs...dog to dog a quick correction in dog terms. he has survived and doesn't nip at other dogs.
  8. check the bedding in your crate, the crates are large enough that it might be soiled in a corner. i always travel w/ crates and it is well appreciated. this way i can go out w/ friends and leave the dogs crated, safe and sound and no one is concerned about any possible destruction or accidents in a strange place. my dogs are lined up, waiting to get into a crate when i have a boarder. often i will find 2 dogs in a crate. try giving high quality treats, a couple of kongs and feeding only in the crate. that might help change your pup's attitude. also, if you dog is not soiling the bedding, try a dog bed in the crate as well. make it as comfortabe as possible.
  9. sorry for the double post...opps!
  10. WILLIE WONKA'S EPISODE OCCURED 6 OR 7 YEARS AGO. SAME MANUFACTURER THAT MY VET HAS ALWAYS USED, I IMMEDATILY ASKED IF THERE WERE ANY CHANGES, EITHER MANUFACTURER OR FORMULA. NONE THAT HE WAS AWARE OF. SIMPLY AN ALLERGIC REACTION.
  11. willie wonka, my welsh terrier had the same reaction to his last rabies shot at age 11. but it occured as i was paying and leaving the office. within the 5 minute period of having the shot he was out cold and seizing . my vet quick went to work on him, dethamethizone and ephenrine and it took a good amount of time to bring him back. i ended up staying in his area and taking a good 30+min. walk as the drugs kicked in and then a good re-exam and NO MORE RABIES SHOTS for willie. which basically meant no more camping for him. willie unfortunately was never the same, i am sure that there was some brain damamge, he was really gone for a while. willie lived a full life to the ripe age of 14. lucky you were still in the area. i would speak to your vet and ask him/her since you have had this experience can he/she personally administer all innoculations.
  12. when emily was diagnosed my daughter looked up the odds-20%....pretty high. we were devistated by the stats along w/ the prospect of loosing our gal. i didn't want to get another grey....then along came annie. hopefully she will be in the 80% with out. it's a depressing stat and reading all the experiences of members of g/t seems to amplify the situation.
  13. we went to a beach house last week- annie's first trip. with in 30 seconds she found a bowl of dried starfish. must be a one of those yummie treats from nature, i bet you the pet industry will catch on soon enough!
  14. i believe that you are talking about stud tail, it's around 6" below the base of the tail where it connects/starts at the body. hormonal from what i have been told, nothing to worry about. please correct me if i am wrong, but check out links to stud tail on g/t
  15. sounds like my late gal emily. a real trooper, take her anywhere, it doesn't matter- as long as there is a good bowl of kibble in it for her! glad to hear that there are other rock solid greys out there.
  16. walk her in a small area and use the term"go potty" or "get busy" or what ever works for you. just walk her back and forth in that specific area. that is where she needs to be taken as soon as she is out. eventually she will potty there and treat her w/ a high quality reward and a verbal good dog/girl. if you always take her to the same spot and wait it out, repeating the same pace back and forth she will learn that's her potty. many dogs will crank it out just for the treat when the key phrase is used.
  17. that walk will always be remembered in such a fond way, wizard will always have a place in your heart and memory.
  18. 15 minutes that is very generous. i wait 5 minutes and in the fridge the food goes. it takes a hungry grey 2-3 minutes to finish 2 cups of soaked kibble.and i just soak the kibble w/ warm water and that's it! i also did this with my daughter during the terrible twos. she learned carrying around her chicken leg and crispy veggies in an insulated lunch bag with a cooling pack that i was not running a resturant. my dogs all work for their treats and my kid only had fruit as a treat when she was growing up.i should be that strict for myself!
  19. my vet uses an i.v. i have had 4 dogs euthanized by him and it was really peaceful for all. i am always glad to have my vet there to comfort me as well. he wraps them in the blanket i bring and carries them out to the car. emily, my late grey was on pain meds already(oseto) she was given the i.v. in a standing position and went down so gracefully, a peaceful end to a sweet life.we bury all of our dogs in our yard and it's always during the coldest part of the winter. i think the other dogs know when it's their companion's time. the ill dog is not functioning well, their scent and behavior is altered and they instinctually know their domestic partner is failing. remember animals have far more sense that humans, they just know.
  20. we have the same problem but in the reverse direction. so, what i have been doing is with the leash on and lots of good yummie treats.... i keep the screen door open- have the wood dog open call, "Annie come!" and my d.h. goes running in with her on lead(they are somewhere in the yard) i give her a hand full of treats we repeat this a dozen times in a row and review when ever she gets spooky. i also put a rubber backed throw rug at the door so she doesn't skid out. so, have someone outside w/the treats leash her well before you are going to go out have your pup called by the person outside in a playful fashion run out the door the person outside greets her with a treat do you have any steps that she needs to contend w/ when she leaves the house? that can be confusing also make sure the floor is not slippery on either sides of the doorway. good luck- i run my husband until he drops!
  21. every year i take felix to the beach(charleston, ri- rough new england sand) he ends up with really bad sand burns from outrunning all the labs and running faster than the tennis ball. felix is not a track grey, he was hand raised and i've had him since he was 7 weeks old. it's the webbing on the paws that's as raw as can be in no time what so ever. so, what should i be doing to prevent the pain and agony that this poor pup(he is 3 years old now)endures after is sprints.in the past i was told to keep them dry and to use medicated powder- ouch-. anything to help toughen them up? my late gal never had any problems, but she didn't have the drive and push that he has.
  22. your gal might be self regulating when it comes to weight and is cutting back or just waiting for the "good stuff". i serve kibble w/ warm water. when they are hungry, they eat. if they don't eat after a couple of minutes i lift the bowl and save it for the next meal. that rarely happens. but dogs tend to loose weight during the summer months so she might just not need as much. how defined are her ribs? laziness- how warm is it or warm and humid- that makes a differernce. dogs in general are pretty lazy creatures except some the super wired terriers. once a dog gets on a schedule, they stick to it. and those greyhounds have perfected the sleep habit. you will most likely see a change when a cool front blows in and she becomes frisky again. my dogs get up, pee and go back to sleep until i get around to feeding them after my i.v. coffee drip. a good friend often stays over during the weekends with her corgi. talk about morning energy, afternoon energy and evening energy!!!! but the corgi shuts down and sleeps while her master is out at work. no problems there, but oh- my, - coffee and corgi! too much for me. look up dinner with bill in the off topic section. you might just have bill's long lost english cousin!
  23. hound's tooth??? is that what you are talking about? lots of people out here is westchester county use dolly and her sister(the tooth fairy- they are located in ca.) and are happy. i do my own dogs teeth.
  24. glad to hear that i am barking up the right tree. i am getting ready for work and have left a zip-lock bag of dog treats taped high on the back door so the ignacio will be ready to reward her just incase she goes up to him when he returns time shall tell.
  25. he doesn't wear any colonge but i will say that his tonal values(now that i think about it) are very different than ours. especially if he speaks in spanish or on the phone. but he speaks to the dogs in a soft sweet voice, he is really playful with them, especially felix. ignacio is is really trying,he took dried liver w/ him so when we all returned from dinner he gave the dogs treats- when they were near him, he didn't go up to them(my request- let her do it). upon return tonightfelix went ballistc(as usual) loving him to death- howling, yodeling- bringing him toys galore, annie froze but watched standing next to me as i gently rubbed her in a calming fashion. trust me, d.h. and i make noise, i vacuume daily and she walks past lots of trucks and buses when we are out. she goes to "the garage"flea market on 25th st, nyc and never blinks an eye at the noise or volume in the city or inside the grungy packed garages.
