    Six Years Ago

    What an absolutely beautiful face
  2. After reading Houndstown's posting about his hounds getting into the logs, I thought it might be good to post about the ASPCA Poison Control Centre. Thanks to Loca, I've had to call several times. There are vets on staff who give great advice, and if you actually use their service (costs approx $75USD), you get a case number and follow up phone calls, as well as a specific care plan. You're hooked up with a specific staff member (usually a vet student in consultation with a vet) who you can access 24 hours, as well as follow up phone calls. This is the same service many vets use when they need poison information.
  3. The only thing you're doing wrong is putting too much pressure on both yourself and your poor dog. RELAX!!!! Really, you're doing fine, you just worry too much about things.
  4. Ugh. I had to do the same thing with Treasure a couple of weeks ago after she ate a package of dark chocolate covered cookies. I waited until the next day to feed her It happens. My bridge angel Loca got into a bottle of vegetarian vitamins that I forgot that I owned. Exact same situation; IV fluids, elevated values, etc. She ended up being fine, as I hope your dog is, also.
  5. I don't crate but i muzzle one of them because she enjoys chewing electrical devices when they are plugged into a power source.
  6. Those training methods and fine and dandy, but you're using a textbook and expecting textbook results. IMO, you need to have some flexibility and alter your methods to fit Annie. Shortly after I adopted Treasure, I took her to obedience school. During those six weeks, she learned nothing! Never learned to sit, never learned down, never learned anything. She just stood there. It didn't matter, because she was already so much better trained than all of the other dogs, that I realized that she would learn in her own way, and that the methods in the school (which also used positive training) just didn't work for her. Maybe it's time to rethink your expectations and to slow it down a bit. Most of all, relax. Annie will come around on her own.
  7. Why are you so intent on so much training this early on? We've all related out experiences and we've all had pretty much the same response. What adoption group was she from? Have you asked them for advice? I'll bet that they would give you the same responses that you've received here. Where in Toronto do you live? Maybe we can meet up and take our dogs for a walk sometime soon. Meeting and walking with other greyhounds might relax Annie. I'm in Kitchener, so I'm pretty close.
  8. Diane and Paul, I'm so very sorry. She couldn't have ended up in a better home.
  9. What a beautiful tribute to a truly beautiful girl. I'm so sorry

    Target

I remember reading about Target when she came over to the US. How terrible! RIP, Target
  11. Oh no, I feel so bad for you! I can't agree with the way your group is handling this. It seems like all they're doing is making your decision even tougher and piling guilt on you. I'm sure your group is aware that some greyhounds need to be around other greyhounds. I can't imagine that they, or another group, wouldn't adopt to you in the future. You've really done a lot for Lola
  12. Don't worry about her spending too much time in her crate. She'll venture out more and more as she feels more comfortable. It's great that she's already taking treats from your hand. It took a year before Phoenix took them from me. I agree with playing fetch outside. Phoenix loves to play fetch with a big, cheapo soccer ball. I kick it around and he chases it and even retrieves it! All dogs are different. While your hound seems a lot like Phoenix, who was very shy and retiring when I first adopted him, my other greyhound is more like a lab disguised as a greyhound. Phoenix was so shy that I was convinced that he hated me. YOur dog will come around, it just takes time.
  13. I wonder if clicker training is starting too soon. I might wait a bit until she gets used to her new world. Maybe it would be a good idea to let her try to relax and get used to things before you start new things. At playgroups, some dogs run than others. Once again it might be a good idea to let her be and to let her socialize and learn at her own pace. She may still be feeling overwhelmed.
  14. Oh Alisha, I'm so very sorry. Paradise was so beautiful and will be missed by all of us
  15. No advice, but I'm so sorry about Blueberry. Hopefully they got it all and she is fine.
  16. He might be adjusting to his new environment. So much is new in his word. Relax and be patient and calm, and he'll eat .
