  1. Okay, maybe I shouldn't even go here but (and I NEVER DID THIS OR EVEN CONSIDERED IT) there are dog breeders that will put their show dogs, routinely, on thyroid meds to grow coat. Sad, isn't it. Well, it seemed to work.
  2. This day is starting out better then yesterday. Vet just called me to say that everything seems to be OK with Ranger. She said they have new equipment in the office and, when she saw the values from his blood work, she questioned that enough (due to the new equipment), drew more blood and sent it to an outside lab. Got a call this morning and everything is *spot on*, for a Greyhound . That was good news and no sign of Addison's disease. Man, when she told me yesterday his Potassium was extremely elevated, I was shocked he hadn't gone into shock or had a heart attack!!! Anyway, she said he is eating this morning (finally got hungry after 2 days of no food). She wants to keep him on the IV's the rest of the day and I'll pick him up later today. So, like she said, he seems to be in pretty good shape for an 11 year old dog. Keeping fingers crossed that this will just prove to be an expensive (yikes!) false alarm. Thanks so much!!!!!
  3. Our Grey has not been *right* lately. He has been eating poorly (hard to tell with him as he is a picky eater) and seems to be losing weight. I called my Vet this morning and they were booked but told me to drop him off and they would check him when they could. I specifically asked that blood work be done. She called me this afternoon and, yes, his blood work is off, mainly potassium very elevated, BUN is off, etc. She is sending out more blood work to the lab and is keeping him overnight on IV fluids. She mentioned she suspects Addison's disease. Ranger just turned 11 last month. I had read about Addison's in the past and just looked it up again. I've never had a dog with this diagnosis. IF this proves to be the diagnosis, am wondering if anyone on the Boards has experience with this in their Greys. I did a Search but didn't come up with much. Hope our boy is going to be okay and I went with my gut and got him in. Thanks.
  4. Our Grey is starting to shed also. I dry mop the floors and see hair by the next day. Had to chuckle at the Sheltie shedding reference. I had a number of Shelties for years and, yes, they shed twice a year. To tell you the truth, I'd rather deal with dust bunnies as opposed to the short hairs on the Greys that get stuck in everything. LOL
  5. Some of his methods I think are good and some not so good BUT when watching his shows, I think people have to take into consideration the breed of dog being worked with and the dog experience of the people that need to train the dog.
  6. our grey had a mostly bald butt when we got him over 7 years ago. over time, it partially filled in. during his summer blow, it gets pretty bald, however, his butt, for the first time, is completely filled in. have no idea why. i've changed his food to pro plan salmon for sensitive stomach and mix that with half the Blue food for his dinner.
  7. our grey, that we've had over 7 years, is again marking in the living room and even once when I was at home, of course, the christmas tree had just been put up. when we are not at home, the doors to the extra bedrooms are and the bathrooms are closed off and I put an ex pen across the large opening to the living room. this leaves him with the kitchen, den, entryway and master bedroom. He has not messed, that I've seen, since the living room is blocked off. When we are home, nothing is blocked off except the living room until we take the tree down.
  8. I have no idea what's going on. What happened to the regular front page? Oh, I'm so confused.
  9. Our Grey was doing this for a while also. I eventually switched to Pro Plan Salmon for sensitive stomachs and there have been no more problems. I do add a little Blue food at his evening meal and a little canned food in the mornings. You may try some acidopholous (?) in case the bacteria in the gut is out of wack due to the antibiotics.
  10. Wow, that is horrible. Hope she is doing better. Thank god for Dr. Couto. Any updates?
  11. Well, I came in from outside where I was brushing our Grey and the hair is flying everywhere!!!! This is the worst he has shed in a very long time. Soooooooooo, came here to find the answer and a possible solution. What do I find? Others are having the same problem. His coat and skin look fine he is just shedding up a storm here and a hairy one at that!! He is on the Pro Plan Salmon food for Sensitive Stomachs that he has been on for months now. Is this breed supposed to shed this much? LOL!!! I had Shelties for years so am used to shedding but at least I had *dust bunnies* to clean up. This short Grey hair is everywhere and very illusive. Well, good to hear I'm not the only one. Winter here yet?
  12. A Vet on my other dog list gives it to her own dogs and is pleased with the results.
  13. Oh, sending prayers and hugs to all.
  14. No, I haven't but that sure looks like it would be very uncomfortable. Poor thing.
  15. Interesting as I've never heard of the stuff. Haven't had a problem with out Grey but when I had Shelties and if they had hot spots (one of my females would get one now and then at the base of the tail), I used a diluted solution of Betadine and water. I'd soak a cotton ball in the liquid, squeeze most of it out, part the hair and dab it on the skin. Either that or apply on the skin with a Q tip. Always worked well.
  16. Wow, glad you were on top of that one. Prayers on the way she is much better today and able to come home!!!
  17. No matter what brand of food I've fed, our Grey is offered 4 cups of dry kibble a day with a couple of spoonfulls of canned in the morning meal. Now, he is a picky eater and the only dog here so we let him free feed. Sometimes, he will eat two meals a day and sometimes only one meal a day. Not unusual for him to eat his breakfast for dinner. He seems to be in good health and weight so I don't worry if he only eats 2 cups a day now and then.
  18. Our Grey is a picky eater. I've had him on Canidae for some time and the past couple of bags, I've noticed he is very gassy!!! A friend was having good results with the Purina Selects foods so I picked up a small bag to try it. Still mixed with the Canidae but he seems to like it (this week) and the gas is less. I can only assume it was the Canidae. Our Grey is a picky eater. I've had him on Canidae for some time and the past couple of bags, I've noticed he is very gassy!!! 19. I've had a couple of dogs that had hot spot problems at the bases of their tails (seasonally). On a fluke one day, I tried using a diluted solution of Betadine. I'd put some on a cotton ball, half squeeze the liquid out, part the hair and dab it on to the skin. Always cleared the spots up. However, I will admit that they never had pus in the areas.
  20. whoops. I sent a donation thru PayPal and forgot to put from Figma. thanks for all the work

Oh, what sad news! I'm just now reading this.
  22. Thanks, Burpdog!! Hope they are able to go back at least 4-5 generations, if possible. I know one side of our Grey's pedigree is blank. It's a LOT of work but can definitely help when trying to track genetic issues.
