  1. Turning into a senior doesn't happen overnight. Sounds more like something is amiss. Panting is a sign of pain. Have you been taking her temp?
  2. Smiling is usually coupled with submissive behavior. Snarling is usually coupled with defensive behavior.
  3. The injury damages the skin enough to alter the pigment in the hair follicles but not destroy them altogether. It's the same principal that lies behind freeze branding in livestock. A freeze brand will grow back white when a hot brand will not grow back at all.
  4. I always wind up calling mine by a one syllable nickname regardless of what their real name is. My Pyr's name is Diego. When he was a puppy, the last part of his name sounded too much like Echo's name, and it confused her. We started calling him Big Head because his head is huge. He responds to Diego, but we mostly just call him Big. We have a dog in the race kennel named Zarola. She'll respond to it okay, but comes flying when you drop the first syllable and just call her Rola. Some of them really do prefer certain names over others!
  5. Hypothyroidism can indeed cause seizures if it is not under control, but it is very easy and inexpensive to control with meds (soloxine). My foster had both, and is on meds for both. We were hoping that the seizure that retired him from racing was an isolated incident, but we weren't so lucky. He is most likely epileptic and his new mom is working with her vet to get his seizures under control with meds. It is a work in progress.
  6. What is your worming schedule? Hooks have a 21 day life cycle and you really have to stay on top of them to get rid of them.
  7. Thanks for this. I get the 403 logged to honeypot error ALL the time on my phone, usually when I reload GT more than twice.
  8. So are you saying that if the op's hound has arthritis or a soft tissue injury it's ok that she develops acute renal disease? You know that's not what I was implying. Than you shouldn't have written it--however, I understand your feelings behind it. Your opinion doesn't change my mind about it.

  10. Any NSAID can cause kidney and liver damage (and likely will if given long term), but Meloxicam is actually one of the more renal and gastro friendly NSAIDs. Either way, organ failure is the least of your concerns right now. At this stage of the game, just do what is easiest and most comfortable for her. For my girl, it was the pills in a spoon of peanut butter. She hated the taste of the liquid.
  11. Just go with half of the 7.5 mg pill. You can get a pill cutter at Walgreens. That's what I did for my girl and it worked beautifully for her. Meloxicam was the only drug she would respond to.
  12. Did your vet diagnose him with Giardia? If he got into bad water, it's likely more than just a simple upset tummy. I'm big on the white rice and raw turkey diet for stomach problems, but in this case I'd follow your vet's advice and fast him. ETA: did your vet put him on any meds? I'd normally suggest giving him some Immodium or Kaopectate, but it might be wise to ask about Flagyl (metronidazole) if he's got it that bad.
  13. Sounds like allergies. It's certainly possible. I'll second Brie's suggestion of meds and vacuuming every day and add to wash his hands after petting him and keep his hands away from his face. If he's willing to work through it, his symptoms will eventually go away.
  14. This ^^ For a long time, Dazzle was right at racing weight and looked great. Now that he's older and has lost muscle tone, he looks fat at 75 lbs and now lingers around 71-72. Nothing to worry about.
  15. Did the vet use normal sutures or the dissolving kind? When I had Diego neutered, one of the dissolving stitches lingered for several weeks after his surgery. Is it oozing? Can you post a picture?
  16. My Australian Shepherd does that when he drinks too much water. No big deal, just don't let him tank up at the water bucket.
  17. Thank you for sharing this, Xan. I've missed hearing stories about her.
  18. Maybe try lining the ground with chicken wire? You'll be surprised how well it works, and it'll put your mind at ease.
  19. I see. Wasn't sure if it was a racing injury or if it happened at home. I'd try the methods I mentioned above. I think you'll be surprised at how well it works. Can you post a picture?
