  1. Read this on Fox News yesterday

Chinese police seize decades-old chicken feet smuggled from Vietnam

    Jul 08, 2013

Police in China discovered decades-old chicken feet, beef tripe, and cartilage when they raided an illegal food storage site in the Guangxi region.

Twenty tons of meat -- some dating back as far as 1967 -- was apparently smuggled by a gang into China from Vietnam, according to the Chinese news agency, Xinhua.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, the chicken feet were brought into China frozen, and then processed with bleach and other chemicals to add weight and improve color. By increasing the weight, the gang was able to turn about 2.2 pounds into more than 3 pounds of seemingly fresh chicken feet, and make thousands of dollars.

Over the last year, Chinese police investigated seven similar cases of smuggled chicken feet, seizing more than $3.2 million in tampered products. When they busted the Guangxi operation in May, the facility was rancid.

"The entire processing facility had a fishy and foul smell," Li Jianmin, from the local Public Security Bureau, told Xinhua. "You just couldn't stand it after one or two minutes."

Illegal imports of bear paws are also booming in Asia. Last year, authorities confiscated 141 smuggled bear paws in just one raid. The paws were also rotten and foul-smelling, but restaurants would cook the paws to mask the odor.

Two Russians were arrested in May in Inner Mongolia, while attempting to smuggle 213 bear paws into China worth more than $456,000.

  2. I started feeding Nadir goat a few days ago in hopes of finding something that will agree with him. This is ground goat meat with bone, organs, and tripe, so I'm thinking it has everyday he needs. First meal went very well with him eating it, next meal not so much. He put his nose down sniffed at it, tasted a bit, then walked away. I thought about how much he has enjoyed cooked vegetables in the past, so not having any cooked up I put some wheatgrass powder on it and stirred it up, put it down and he scarfed it up. As long as there are vegetables or something green in it he will finish it, put the plain meat down and he walks away from it. Now I make him a blend of cooked and mashed collards, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. I even found a new pasta by Barilla called Veggie that I mix in. There is a serving of vegetables in every portion. They've got 3 varieties; farfalle with pureed carrots and squash, rotini with zucchini and spinach, and penne with tomato and carrots. Nadir says dinner was yummy :chow

So much for my belief that dogs if given a choice want to eat strictly meat :lol Live and learn I guess.

  3. I am so sorry you are going thru this!! You're right.......it's just too much, too soon.

If anyone knows what you're going thru, it's Lorinda (3DogNite). She was invaluable with her knowledge and support when Suze was dx'd with glomerulonephritis, not related except in palliative care/treatment. I truly believe that we would not have another 18 months with Suze without the alternative treatments she recommended. Reiki and acupuncture are wonderful complimentary treatments, too.

    Praying for you and Nadir.

Thank you for this bit of reassurance. I've always been a proponent of alternative treatments, but for some reason was scared that whatever I do will be the wrong decision. Lorinda sent me a pm to let me know the essential oils would not interfere with any treatments he is going through.

  4. I think Acana is a good choice brand wise. I would have suggested California Natural GF Venison and Potato, Nadir did super good poop wise with that food, however with their recent recalls I would not recommend them anymore. I do think venison based foods do seem to work better though because it is a leaner meat. Another food that has produced nice poops is NB Limited Ingredient Rabbit and Potato.

  5. In my quest to find a protein that will not cause his urination problems I'm now seeing if goat agree with his bladder. I know it says you should give calcium to offset the phosphorus, but this is ground goat with organs, tripe, and bone included, so do I need to add calcium or will the ground bone provide a good balance with the phosphorus from the meat?

  6. Oh for goodness sake! At least you found this earlier rather than later--early diagnosis is key. Sending good wishes to you and Nadir.

This is the part that scares me, I don't think we caught it early. Looking back, I now know the weakness I started seeing in his backend in October was from the large clot that is sitting there. Right now just even just walking on leash outside to potty causes him to pant and breathe heavily.

Edited to add, Nancy thank you sooooo much for the pictures of Lydia's sweet face. Nadir's a very lucky hound to be able to call her his sweethart.

  7. After having to deal with their cancers and losing Bruiser in February and then Beanie in March it seems that life didn't think that was enough trouble for me this year. When I took Nadir to Auburn to try to find out why he has been having the problem with increased urination they were not able to give me an answer. What they did tell me though is that he has a very large thrombus at the aortic trifurcation along with a heart that shows a hyperechoic myocardium on echocardiogram with signs of systolic failure. So I go straight from cancer to dealing with a heart problem. Right now he's on Clopidogrel to help prevent the formation of more clots. And bless my vet, he once again has come through to help me with the medication. The lowest price I was able to find at a pharmacy was $45 per month. He got me a 3-month supply for $25. We go back Wednesday to Auburn for our 3rd appointment and 2nd echocardiogram. Considering all the panting he's been doing at the slightest bit of exertion I'm not feeling that good about the prognosis, which they've listed as guarded, of his condition. I've had enough of my dogs being sick, I just want him to be well. Is that really so much to ask for?

  8. Poor Henry. This too reminds me of something very similar that happened to Beanie.

It started with an angry red area near the joint that morning.

By the time I was able to make arrangements just a few hours later to get her to the vet her leg from toe to thigh was extremely swollen. Here in this picture you can see how swollen her left rear leg was compared to the right.

I feel for Henry because I can still remember Beanie's cries and know how excruciatingly painful for her this was. A few days later this area burst open, which led us to believe it had been a spider bite.

  9. I believe Amicar (aminocaproic acid) is standard protocol for all greyhounds having limb amputations at OSU, so certainly not a drug with little known effects on dogs.

Just wanted to add I understand the reluctance to proceed when you don't know what is causing the low platelets in the first place. I'm sorry things have been so tough for your family.
