Guest Meredith
FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND You're giving me a special gift, So sorrowfully endowed, And through these last few cherished days, Your courage makes me proud. But really, love is knowing When your best friend is in pain, And understanding earthly acts Will only be in vain. So looking deep into your eyes, Beyond, into your soul, I see in you the magic, that will Once more make me whole. The strength that you possess, Is why I look to you today, To do this thing that must be done, For it's the only way. That strength is why I've followed you, And chose you as my friend, And why I've loved you all these years... My partner 'til the end. Please, understand just what this gift, You're giving, means to me, It gives me back the strength I've lost, And all my dignity. You take a stand on my behalf, For that is what friends do. And know that what you do is right, For I believe it too. So one last time, I breathe your scent, And through your hand I feel, The courage that's within you, To now grant me this appeal. Cut the leash that holds me here, Dear friend, and let me run, Once more a strong and steady dog, My pain and struggle done. And don't despair my passing, For I won't be far away, Forever here, within your heart, And memory I'll stay. I'll be there watching over you, Your ever faithful friend, And in your memories I'll run, ...a young dog once again. ======================= In Memory of Asta, Feb. 1997 © Karen Clouston ======================= My sympathies to all who have had to say goodbye too soon recently. Know that your friend is at peace, watching over you, always with you, loving you still.

Pepsi2004
This is a very touching poem for any of us that have lost our beloved companions. Last night I had a very upsetting dream about my soulmate horse - he crossed the bridge in 2001 - today, this lovely poem has really spoken to me. Thanks. Remolacha
Thank you for posting this. I sent it to my friend who just lost her 18 yr old kitty. She said, it made me cry, and I said, it made me cry too, that's why I sent it to you. I'm saving a copy for myself. With five of my seven animals being seniors, I know I'll need it, sooner than I would like.

Guest Missing_Holiday
What a wonderful poem! I especially like the part about "giving back the strength I've lost and all my dignity". I posted earlier about making the decision to have my beautiful sweet Holiday put to sleep yesterday. Part of what was so funny about her was that she truly knew she was beautiful and she behaved in such a feminine, almost royal way. She was a proud princess (very jealous, too!) and she made it clear in our household that I was pack leader, she was next in line and my son was last, which I thought was so funny. When I saw her pride and dignity slipping away, I knew it was time. Thanks for posting the lovely poem.

Guest blastsmom
I just recently lost my beagle of 14 yrs. He was my best friend. Last year I rescued 2 greys and another beagle, but nobody will replace my Ramsey. Reading this poem has brought so many tear to me. I miss him so very much. I know it was the right thing to do, as he was in pain each day. I just hope my other dogs live as long as he did. He had a great life here. And hopefully my greys and other beagle will too. Reading all the posts help to give encouragement when I feel so very down. Thanks so much!!
