Excessive licking of front knees

Recommended Posts

My boy does it too and it drives me crazy.  I've had him to the vet and it is possibly the start of arthritis.

Could be a habit like children sucking their thumb but as Houndtime says it could be arthritis. It might be worth a visit to the vet or mention it at his next check-up.

Could be some sort of contact allergy, or the beginning of arthritis as mentioned.  Also some dogs develop soothing behaviors that help keep them calm that can include excessive licking of a body part or furniture (or wall or toy or whatever's handy).

If your vet checks him out and there's no medical reason, try positively redirecting him to an appropriate chew item or toy when he starts doing it.  I've also resorted to wrapping my dog up in a blanket burrito to keep them from getting at the place they want to lick!  ;)

I went to the vet who couldn't find anything wrote but recommended a cone, he didn't like the cone as expected.  So i tried another idea I had, I put one of my long sleeve T shirt on him, over his head and both front legs inside the arms... its working perfectly, he stopped licking, slept all night, woke up, ate, walked... perfect so far.
