Nancy
I have a male 7 year old greyhound that was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Knowing that greyhounds run on the low end we did a follow up TSH to verify so I feel the diagnosis is accurate. Here's my problem/question. Opie was prescribed .05 Thyroid-Tabs twice a day. After about a week I noticed his appetite was off. We did a blood recheck and it came back at 1.3. After that recheck we upped the dose to .75 twice a day and he completely stopped eating. Follow up blood work was all within normal limits. We pulled him off the Thyro-tabs and appetite returned to normal within 24 hours. Has anyone had this particular experience with their hounds and thyro-tabs? Thanks in advance.
greysmom
Usually it's the opposite that happens - they want to eat too much! But loss of appetite for overmedication can happen too. FWIW, my boy's reading was .2 (yes, point 2) and that was normal for him. So when you say low end, it can be *really* low end. He was on thyroid supplementation when he came to us, but he didn't really need it. When he was on supplementation he was underweight and always hungry, very hyper, and couldn't concentrate. Once we stopped it, he gained weight and calmed down almost immediately. Does your dog have any other clinical symptoms of low thyroid? macoduck
My senior italian greyhound had a reading on zero when tested. It was an accidental finding on routine testing and we then did additional testing. He had no symptoms of thyroid trouble. He's been on 0.3mg Thyro-Tabs twice a day. He is always hungry. Nancy
@greysmom He was symptomatic with weight gain and poor coat. The weight gain was gradual. I tried cutting back on food/treats and increasing exercise.....no change. His coat has never been great with lots of dandruff no matter what I did. I'm meeting with the vet next week to discuss next steps. This is just puzzling to me and the vet. Oh well.
tbhounds
I would consider a full thyroid panel run by MSU with an endocrinologist review
