rmitala
After 2 days of diarrhea, took Chowder to the vet. Although the routine bloodwork came back normal, Dr Shreiber gave her a shot to calm her GI tract, a B-12 shot and sent a blood sample to Texas A&M. The results came back indicating inflammation of the pancreas and malabsorption. She is now on a therapy of B-12 shots and Prednisone. Dr. Shreiber was very knowledgeable about greys, proactive and knew about the diagnostics at Texas A&M. It is great having a vet who is grey savy! greysmom
Is there a question, or just a for your vet?? Pancreatitis can be very serious, so make sure you follow his instructions. It's also important to keep the fat under control in your dog's diet, and he may recommend a prescription food for her for a while. Hopefully she'll be feeling better soon! Hubcitypam
Poodle had a severe case with arching back vomit. He had to be on low fat food from then on. I flat out told my vet that I wasn't feeding Hills and their cellulose (which can be sawdust, peanut hulls, cotton or any plant fiber). He lived many years on Natural Balance Ultra Light - their Fat Dog formula will also work for pancreatitis.
rmitala
Thanks, Hubcitypam. We’re trying to keep her fat ingestion down but she is quite thin (now 49 lbs., was as low as 45). Hopefully we can treat her Pancreatitis and put on some weight.
Ruth
We just went through that with Jasper and he spent 4 days in the hospital. They had us feed chicken with mashed potatoes and Boiled hamburg with the fat skimmed off with rice. He lost about 12 pounds but is now on his way back to normal. He is now eating his regular food and doing well. He still tries to get what ever he can food the table but he gets No fat. The hardest was not to give his his string cheese. He loves that stuff. DaintyDutchess
Is pancreatitis mainly caused by dogs getting human food or too much high fat foods at once? What are some of the other causes for the dogs/greys here?
Hubcitypam
Poodle's was because my sister fed him about 4 slices of bacon while I was asleep. Then it turned in to diabetes but there was speculation on if the two were related.
rmitala
DantyDuchess, our vet did not give a cause but it seems that greys with this condition are often put on a low fat diet. Poor Chowder had side effects from the steroid (Prednisone) so we cut the dosage from 2 pills per day to one. Couple days later, side effects were gone.
