Safe to give Panacur and Nexgard same day?

Recommended Posts

We are battling hookworms and are currently using Dr Ng's protocol, which gives 5 doses of Panacur mid-month.  We give Advantage Multi at the start of the month and Nexgard mid-month.  Is it safe to give Nexgard and Panacur the same day?  I can certainly give one at breakfast and the other at dinner.

Thank you for your help.

It might be safe but I would stagger them by a day and make sure the dog has a full meal before each just to avoid even the possibility of upset.

I think I would allow some time between the two just to monitor for any side effects. I do not know if they should be given together or not, but I never give more than one thing on a given day and usually wait at least a day or two in order to know if there are any side effects.

We are currently treating Petunia for hookworms and after giving the Advantage Multi we had almost a month of bloody diarrhea to contend with. She was absolutely loaded with hooks and eggs.  We knew her stomach was having issues as a result and ended up delaying the Drontal Plus on the advice of our vet until her stools were better.  This was her first dose of both, so we are hoping subsequent dosing will be less harsh on her system since so much came out of her on the first treatment. As it turned out, the Drontal Plus made her hyper.  Had we followed the Prison Protocol, we wouldn't have known which med was causing either issue.  I look at it like changing foods, only one change at a time so you know what is happening and what the cause is.

Good luck!  These hooks are nasty.

Thanks.  I am inclined to agree with both of you - I normally space things out and always give drugs with food unless it is specifically indicated not to.  Currently thinking of the below schedule.  I added a Pyrantel dose in the first half of the month since May will be the second month of treatment and apparently it takes 3 before the Advantage Multi achieves a steady state in the system.

If anyone sees any issue with the following, or has a better idea, would appreciate the feedback.

Day 1:  Advantage Multi

Day 4 or 5: Pyrantel (14 days after the last dose of Panacur during the previous month, depending on 30/31 day month )

Day 15: Nexgard

Day 17 - 21: Panacur, with the addition of Pyrantel on the 21st

Should work.  What does your vet say?

Just for myself, I would probably just choose a day of the week and give one thing on that day throughout the month - like one med every Monday.    I would find it easier to keep track month to month.  But that's just me!  ;)
