Guest MnMDogs
So Macy May has facial swelling and hives for no known reason. She is not agitated, and ate her normal dinner, and is in no distress. I gave her 3 benedryl and am watching her. This happened in July, I woke to her with an extremely swollen muzzle, she looked like Pluto (the Disney character, not the planet). I freaked out, and brought her to evet, even though she was in no distress. They gave her steroids (I had given her benedryl) and sent her home. I don't think the steroids did much because over the next 2 days she continued to be covered in hives all over her body. Her face eventually deflated, but her body became covered and she was obviously very itchy. Given this history, do you think I need to get her in for steroids? I'd actually like to give her some of the steroids that I have on hand (methylprednisone). If this was the first time is happened, I'd be completely panic stricken afraid of anaphylaxis. But she's laying here completely comfortable and snoozing away. She's actually much less swollen than he last time, but like then, we have no idea what caused this. So I'm less worried, but I can see new hives popping up about 15 minutes after I gave the benedryl. Help?
greysmom
Weird. But hives can also be a contact thing and not necessarily a food thing. Perhaps it's time to see a specialist, since OTC remedies *and* rxs don't seem to be helping her?? Guest MnMDogs
I'm pretty sure it's a contact thing. Strangely enough I had a similar reaction on my lips when I moved back to Boston (Macy was still in CA, so no chance it was the same thing). I'm allergic to my retainer... Wish we could figure it out for Macy. I just hate bringing her in for more poking and prodding. She's become terrified of the vet since her fibrosarcoma diagnosis 2 years ago (and 2 subsequent surgeries). Thank you for your reply... It really is so weird. tbhounds
I would keep a close eye on her--how long since the first onset??
Guest MnMDogs
I thought her muzzle looked a tiny bit swollen about 6 or so after our walk. Then I noticed the hives on her snout about 7 and gave her benedryl then. Seems to be stemming from the 3 little bumps / blisters that I see on her gum above her right canine and that side is most swollen. She seems itchy, but is sleeping now. Hubcitypam
Only time I ever had face swelling/hives was from Frontline plus in one foster. He could use the old Frontline with no problem but the plus made him swell up.
Guest MnMDogs
No Frontline either time. It's just so random... Sweet thing is snoozing away now.
Dawnnziggy
We just went through that! I rushed Ziggy to the vet. They gave him a steroid shot and some antibiotics. The steroid shot was in case it was a reaction to a bug bite or something. The antibiotics are in case the swelling is from an abscessed tooth. His face was really swollen. There were no hives. I was so worried so I understand. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.
greysmom
I seem to have a niggling memory of some sort of dental/tooth thing - blisters on the gums, facial swelling - and it's some sort of auto-immune disease. I wouldn't be surprised if hives was on the list of symptoms. Maybe someone will have a better memory than me. Or Google might. MaryJane
Have the vet check for a cracked tooth as that could cause an infection which in turn will cause swelling.
Guest MnMDogs
Well as of 3 am when I got up to give more Benadryl, she was back to normal. She has SLO, so I wonder about the auto immune thing. Off to google. I also sent a pic to our longtime vet in CA ... I wonder if she'll know. We brush daily, and I haven't seen any indication of a cracked tooth. I'll take s closer look today. tbhounds
A fractured tooth wouldn't cause hives ;-). Glad she's back to normal!
