Elevated Kidney Levels

Recommended Posts

Franny had her dental today and we found out from the pre-anesthesia blood work that she has slightly elevated kidney levels. I don't have her home yet so I haven't been able to talk to the doctor in depth about it, but its worries me. She just turned 10 in February and has been very healthy. I hope this is a minor thing.

Is your vet aware that ghs have rentals values that run on the higher side?? One thing your vet should do is check your hounds urine specific gravity. I would check it next week sometime (I assume that your hound was given IV fluids during the dental prophy-so that's why I would wait a few days to a week). The first a.m sample after an overnight water fast will prove to be the most affective. Ideally, the USG should be >1.030 :-)

Which of the kidney level values? There's at least 3: creatinine, BUN, and the urine specific gravy that tbhounds posted about above. From www.greythealth.com greyhound bloodwork article by vet Suzanne Stack:

Creatinine

Greyhounds: .8 - 1.6

Other dogs: .0 - 1.0

Greyhound creatinines run higher than other breeds as a function of their large lean muscle mass. A study at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine found that 80% of retired greyhounds they sampled had creatinine values up to 1.6 times as high as the top of the standard reference range for "other dogs." As a lone finding, an "elevated creatinine" is not indicative of impending kidney failure. If the BUN and urinalysis are normal, so is the "elevated" creatinine.

Her's was 2.something. I can't remember now. The vet isn't too worried, but I have to take her back in a month for a recheck.

Thank you for the link, I was going to ask about that.
