Guest lucylei
Missy tends to think anything left on the floor is a free-for-all. Yesterday we had a spill on the table so bowls and plates went on the floor while we cleaned it up. Before we knew it, Missy was flying in from the other room and got two big mouth fulls of avocado before we could drag her away. Now she's sick. She woke up at 6am and started walking around, asking to be let out. Her tummy is making audible bubbling noises and she won't drink or eat. She went to the park and had no problem jogging, peeing and pooping, but it's the first morning since we've had her that she hasn't eaten her breakfast. And the grass hasn't made her vomit yet. Does anyone have any experience with avocado? Is this a serious thing I need to talk to the vet about or will it pass?
beledi
Did she eat the seeds. They are poisonous to dogs. Quote "Then God sent the Greyhound to live among man and remember. Guest lucylei
Nope - just the guac...the fruit I guess?
greysmom
Probably just too much for her system to handle. It's OK for them to eat - not poisonous anyway! - as long as she didn't eat the pits. She'll probably have diarrhea and a gurgley stomach all day. I would actually fast her until tomorrow morning before I would feed her again. Unless she's all good by tonight (no diarrhea or gurgles and back to interested in food), though it would be a light dinner. Sambuca
I've heard it's dangerous to dogs. A small amount shouldn't be a big deal, but if she's sick I'd call the vet.
dmswartzfager
Here is information from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/poison-control/Plants/avocado Only thing mentioned for toxicity is vomiting and diarrhea, and if you sort their list by plants toxic to dogs, the avocado doesn't show up at all. Guest Waterdog66
Hopefully it was just the high fat in the Avo that is affecting your hound. Sounds like there was no way for her to get to the stone so that is probably a good thing. (It is pretty bitter anyway)
Guest lucylei
Thanks everyone! She's back to being her hungry self today, making eyes at me and sniffing the countertops like she hasn't eaten in days. She did have *lots* of diarrhea and smelliness during the night but seemed to have worked through it...we won't be giving her avocado anytime soon...
