Guest lilpnai09
Hi, everyone! My boy, Galahad, aka Jawa Buddy, was just diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma. He had a large mass on his chest, which was debulked and sent of to the pathologist and unfortunately, it is cancerous. His xrays and abdominal ultrasounds came back clean (Thank God!) and now we just have to meet with an oncologist to figure out what our next step should be and learn all of our options. I was wondering if anyone can recommend an oncologist in the NJ area that is experienced with greyhounds. My vet recommended Dr. Alsaraaf at AERA in Fairfield, NJ, who she is most familiar with and Dr. Craig Clifford who is at Hope Veterinary Specialist in PA. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks! msjpk
I don't know of any, but I am sure someone on this forum can help you or get in touch with Dr. Cuoto from OSU.
Charlies_Dad
Sorry, you and your pup are going through this. I don't know any in NJ but tbhounds (Tracy) will likely know. I believe she lives there if I recall correctly. I second OSU and Dr. C's team as albeit they are in Ohio. Good thoughts for Galahad. MP_the4pack
I'm in NJ. If you want to stay fairly local, go to Red Bank Vet Hospital. It's the largest private hospital in the country. I actually drove out to OSU (9 hrs) when my Pearl had fibrosarcoma of the spleen and Diamond had OS.
tbhounds
Dr Sherger!! He's at Garden State Vet, Tinton Falls-he just finished his residency at Ohio State-he KNOWS greyhounds. I have personally seen Dr Clifford @ RedBank-wonderful personality and a good clinician-he's familiar with ghs too but, Dr Sherger I'm sure has more gh experience just leaving OSU. Sorry about the diagnosis. Feel free to pm me :-)

Guest SueG201
I spent a fortune at the Animal sPecialty vet in Fairfield, NJ and got nowhere with my whippet. She had to be PTS at age 8 from an unknown blood disorder, so i have no faith in them. I heard Redbank has a really good facility, but I do not know the name Good Luck
Guest lilpnai09
Thanks, everyone for the good thoughts, the comfort, information and all of your insights. They helped tremendously and I have a better sense of what direction I'm going to take. Other than my experience with Havoc, who passed away from prostate cancer (it had progressed too far when we discovered it), this is a whole different ballgame for me and I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing by him. I feel less lost, if that makes any sense. =)
PatricksMom
I'm not sure where you are in NJ, but is University of Pennsylvania an option? It wasn't cancer, but we got great care from their specialists there and they have some Dr. Coutro trained residents. No matter who you pick, good thoughts for you and your boy. Quote Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). Godspeed Patrick (28 April 1999 - 5 August 2012), Murphy (23 June 2004 - 27 July 2013), Leo (1 May 2009 - 27 January 2020), and Henry (10 August 2010 - 7 August 2020), you were loved more than you can know. MP_the4pack
The only problem I have with U of Penn (as a teaching hospital) is that before vets see you, the residents see you. If they do something incorrect the doctor may never realize it. I took Diamond there for broken ribs. She had a 4 inch indentation on her right side. Deep enough to hold water if she laid down. I took her there, the resident did xrays and the xrays showed no damage. In my gut I knew something was wrong but the xrays didn't lie. Halfway home it hit me.........they took an xray of the LEFT side. The complaint was on her right. So it never made it to the vets because the resident took xrays of the wrong side. I prefer non-teaching clinics nowadays.
